It’s been a little while since we’ve caught up with Daniel Penafiel, so we figured it would be a good time to hit him up and see what was new. It turns out that he just built up a brand new bike decked out with a ton of prototype parts from Mutant Bikes including the latest version of his signature Tizona frame and bars. We figured that was a perfect excuse to do a brand new Bike Check to take a closer look at his current bike and find out what else is new with him! Ready? Let’s do this!

What’s the newest part on your bike?
My signature frame and v2 bars (prototype), rims (prototype), Rio V2 stem (prototype) and Bionic cranks (final prototype).
What about the oldest? Does it hold any sort of sentimental value?
It have a bracelet on my handlebar, it belongs to my friend Alvaro Serrano.
What is your favorite part of the bike?
My signature frame of course, hahah. And the cranks. I love the new system.
You are running the second version of your signature Tizona frame. What changes did you make for this version?
We gave it a shorter back end, new seat stay and chain stay bridge making it clean and super strong. The V2 frame comes with Mid bottom bracket as well. Also, the 2nd version of my bars are a bit higher now. They will come in 8.76″ rise.
Are you pretty particular with the way your bike is set up? (Seat height, bar angle, etc.) or do you like to change things up?
I think for me it just has to be a bike that is comfortable for the street, park, dirt.
How often do you build up a new bike? Do you like to keep everything dialed or do you like to run everything until it’s broken?
I always want to have my bike looking dialed, but at same time I like to run the parts for a long time to test if it is strong. So far, I’m impressed with the quality and durability. So most of the time I only replace the parts because they are old and don’t look cool.
Are you good at working on your bike, or do you like to have somebody else do the work?
No one else fixes my bike. I love to work it by myself so I know that everything is exactly how I want it.
How are things going with Mutant Bikes? Do you have any projects in the works with them like trips, videos or new signature products?
I am very happy with Mutantbikes because working with them makes me feel at home. Nuno is my boss, but more then that he is an awesome friend and that’s very important to me. Yes, I have new projects in the works to promote my signature frame and bars. I’ll be making some trips and I’ll do some contests this year as well.
What about Vans? Anything new going on there? We heard you have a new video in the works for them.
Yes, I have been working on a new video project for Vans. I am searching for some new spots to make for some great clips and photos.
When can we expect to see the new video for Vans online?
I think that you will be able to expect the video in a couple of months.
How about Arnette or Dickies? Do you have anything going on with those guys that you can tell us about?
I don’t have any individual plans as of right now now, but I have things in my mind to do throughout the year to keep pushing the support they give me.
What are your travel plans looking like? Any big trips your have coming up?
I should be going to Portugal soon to film and shoot some pictures for any future adverts. There are some great spots and the place is paradise.
You mentioned you plan to hit up some contests this year. Any in particular?
I’ll be going to Fise World Montpellier in France. I love the vibe that the contest has, the party and the crowds.
What have you been getting into when you aren’t riding these days? Any jobs or hobbies keeping you busy?
In my spare time, I have been working on my new house, decorating, furniture and everything. I’m always busy, I love to do things, haha. I have a little space in my indoor park to repair some cars, too. I ride every day, but is good to do other things out of BMX.
