The SIBMX crew over in Germany took their annual team trip. This year they made their way to Athens, Greece to see what the place had to offer for spots. Here’s a video Freedom BMX put together giving us a look at what the squad threw down and some of the fun they had along the way! This is just under 8 minutes of footage that’s well worth a watch!

Tons of spots, great weather, very lax law enforcement, and some of the nicest locals you’ll ever meet: Athens is definitely one of the best cities in the world to visit as a street rider. Check out what the SIBMX squad got done while they were in town.

“Oh no! Not Athens! ”Was my first reaction when the destination of this year’s SIBMX company outing was announced by the organizing committee. How so? Well, I had already visited the capital of Greece twice in the past and didn’t remember it as particularly suitable for BMX trips.

Sure, the weather would be great and the Acropolis is a World Heritage Site. But who cares about ancient ruins? I longed for good street spots. And in my experience, Athens lacks precisely these. The enthusiasm for another visit was therefore within my limits. For a while I even tried to change my fellow travelers – to no avail.

Fortunately, I have to say afterwards! Because it turned out on site that the choice of a better city could not have been made. In fact, in addition to the famous sights (keyword: cradle of western culture), Athens also has a lot of attractions for a chaos group of party-mad cross-bike vandals like ours. In addition, at least in the city center, none of the laws known to us seem to apply. And if they do, the local law enforcement officers only enforce them in homeopathic doses.

Pretty much all other points on the checklist for a perfect BMX vacation were easily fulfilled by Athens. Brilliant sunshine every day and temperatures above 20 degrees even at night? Check! Perhaps a jolted measure of both super nice and extremely helpful locals who read every wish from your lips? Check! And how about an affordable apartment in the center of the city including a roof terrace with a view of the aforementioned Acropolis as well as many great nightlife options that can be reached on foot from there? Definitive double check!

All that’s missing are the spots, which of course are not only above average and numerous, but also not a bust. It turns out: Contrary to my previous experiences with Athens, there is also a check mark behind this point – and an extra thick one. Well, you can be wrong!

After returning home, it turned out that I was also wrong on another point. Between us, I would never have thought it possible that there would be a print edition of freedombmx again in the foreseeable future after the big anniversary edition last year. But things turned out differently. At the freedombmx Awards 2019 in the skate hall Aurich we presented our latest issue: a super chic photo issue with the best photos from the # SIMYTHOS trip 2019 to Athens, which was not only shot by Merlin Czarnulla aka our employee of the year, but also was layouted and is now available everywhere in well-stocked BMX retailers. You can find more information about our special edition here: https: //freedombmx.de/news/freedombmx …

Thanks to the great support provided by SIBMX, we once again managed to cheat the zeitgeist. Then an ice-cold myth and thank you to everyone involved! So you like to be wrong! And when we’re already celebrating, a bold exclamation point afterwards:

Print ain’t dead – and BMX a long time ago!
