Andy Maguire – Dad’s Junk Drawer

It has been a little while since we’ve seen a fresh BMX video from Andy Maguire, but he’s been busy living that dad life, which has cut back on the riding time, and time to make new videos. Fortunately he had some time to put together this new one from clips he’s been filming over the course of the past few years with his friends. Despite having less time, Andy still ended up coming through with some gold that we’re really stoked on featuring him and a few others going to work on spots. Hit play and check out just what they cooked up! Hopefully once things calm down a bit he’ll be able to find a little time to keep these videos coming!

“I knew that when my son was born, big life changes were sure to come. I didn’t think I’d end up sitting on two years of footage, only to get around to editing it because I was in the midst of a global pandemic. The thing is, I’ve had most of this on a timeline over the course of those two years, but it never felt right. It felt incomplete, jumbled, and a little lazy, much like that junk drawer most people seem to have in their kitchen. But when I revisited this, I started to rearrange some footage and make changes that made this feel a little more forgiving to my previous expectations. Seeing it all again through the lens of being a father, husband, employee and a bike rider(with drastically reduced hours), it didn’t feel like I was settling short. We always want to better, but sometimes you actually find what you need in that junk drawer. Once it’s organized in a functional way, it no longer has to be this cringeworthy thing in your life. So this edit is to celebrate riding while taking on new responsibilities, appreciate those who have moved in and out of town, the crew that has been with me for over a decade, the music they make, and those who might not be able to ride. Times can be difficult, but bike riding has made us strong, flexible, and capable of overcoming so many obstacles in the physical and mental realm. Enjoy!” – Andy Maguire

Check out this new mix from the crew out in Santa Cruz!

It’s always a good day when there’s an email from Andy Maguire in the inbox! Here’s a new one he just put together that is 20 minutes of footage from the crew out in Santa Cruz riding spots, parks and trails over the course of the past 4 or so years. This features Andy, Dusty Sampson, Reed Zirjacks, Jacob Hyde, Jake Honesto, John Bennett, Guy French, Tyler Compari, Jordan Murdock, Ryan Finn, David Schimmel, Mario Alonso, Dimitri Huizar, Murph Dawg and Bob Randel cruising and having a good time on their bikes. Check it!

“A fresh start is always a great feeling. Most of this footage is from now back to last September, but a good portion of Dusty’s section is 4 years old. Luckily, he has a timeless style, which will still be rad even 831 years from now. The trail jam is from Halloween last year, so it’s not customary for people to dress up like Wayne’s World or the Hamburglar and get weird in the woods. This wasn’t even supposed to be a long project, but I think it works better that way. Santa Cruz is a great place to be a BMX rider. Thanks for watching!” – Andy Maguire

DIG Locals – Santa Cruz BMX Scene

It’s always a good day when a new video featuring Andy Maguire and the Santa Cruz crew surfaces online. Here’s a fresh mix of footage from Andy, Ryan Nyquist, Jackson Allen and many more from the Santa Cruz, California area getting down on street spots, skateparks and trails. This is packed with awesome riding and some real clean film work. Overall this is a great BMX video from start to finish, so take a look! You won’t be disappointed.

“Andy Maguire has been holding it down for the street scene in Santa Cruz for quite some time now so when he contacted Chris Bracamonte about filming some sort of scene report last year we were immediately on board. Here’s a few words about Santa Cruz from the man himself.

“A severed blue hand, screaming in pain; numerous bigfoot sightings; a 93-year old wooden roller coaster; and free Eddie Money concerts once a year. Aside from rich ocean scenery surrounded by forest seclusion, the small coastal town of Santa Cruz, California is a place that oozes character. On any given day, you will probably stumble across dreadlocked hippies, young skate punks who were born and raised gliding across concrete, surfers who come from all walks of life or the awkward UC student taking their first steps into life as an adult. I was definitely the last example when I moved here from the suburbs over 12 years ago. At first, this place seemed like an uncomfortable, strange place, but over the years, the quirks and the lifestyle of the area slowly normalized to the point that it fills me with appreciation to call this place my home.

I don’t think I would call it home if it weren’t for the amazing bike-riding community of Santa Cruz. Much like the populace, there is a wide variety of riders here; a few legends (Ryan Nyquist and Ron Wilkerson), people who dig trails, cruise the streets, ride ramps, and even pioneer their own forms of freestyle. The riders here also seem heavily shaped by the environment that surrounds them. Although many riders here are extremely talented, the laid-back, vacationing attitude generally prevails over the drive to become a professional bike rider or to “progress” the sport. One thing I find pretty refreshing about our scene is that after the sun goes down and your muscles hurt from riding all day, you can usually count on grabbing a beer and hanging out with your riding compatriots as friends, not just people who are around and share the same interests. The scene values enjoyment, friendship, and creativity, rather than the statistical values of views, likes, and quantity of barspins. If the idea of being a part of a BMX retirement community sounds enticing, I would highly recommend risking your life on Highway 17 to check out what Santa Cruz has to offer.”

We’re always stoked when Andy Maguire drops a video in the inbox. Here’s a new mix he put together featuring him and a few friends getting down on his old college campus that he went to. THis has a pretty laid back vibe as always, but there’s no shortage of awesome footage to take in. Hit that play button!

“It’s graduation time, so here’s an edit filmed entirely at my alma mater. UCSC is basically an Ewok village, filled with redwood trees and hill bombs. Aside from world class academics, it also has some very unique spots to session along the way. The mascot is also a banana slug. Nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but UCSC is easily one of my top 5 places to ride ever. Also, the song is on heavy rotation on the campus radio station, KZSC (which I also love). Enjoy!

Pro Walk America 2016

Andy Maguire sent through a video he put together from the trip that he took with Mario Alonso across America from California to Pennsylvania and a bunch of places along the way like Chicago! This has a pretty laid back vibe, but it looks like the guys had plenty of luck finding things to ride along the way. Check it out!

“Here is the by-product of a month long road trip Mario Alonso and I embarked upon from July 9 – August 12. I think we drove through over 25 states, and got to shred in a majority of those. It was awesome to make this pilgrimage, and if you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend driving across the country. There’s so much to take in from this country we live in, both good and bad. But one trend that stayed pretty true was that BMXers are always down to help other BMXers; whether it was showing somebody around, giving tips on where to eat, or offering a place to stay, the BMX community is still a big fraternity that has your back. Thanks for watching!

Rest In Peace, Smillin’ Steve Kennedy

It’s always a bummer hearing about BMX losing a great rider. We just found out that last month Smillin’ Steve Kennedy had lost his life when he was struck by a vehicle walking. Not sure on the exact details, but it’s definitely a sad situation. It has been a little while since we’ve heard or seen anything from Steve, but he was still out riding and crushing it like he had been back in 2007 when we interviewed him on the site. Andy Maguire was sitting on some footage that he had and decided to edit up one last video of Steve for everyone to check out. Rest In Peace, Steve!

Here’s an interesting thread on Reddit where there’s a few stories about Steve, there’s also another website setup dedicated to him right here with some stories about him as well.

“On August 7th of this year, the riders in Santa Cruz lost a dear friend. Steve had a contagious smile and could pretty much do anything on a bicycle. We are all going to miss you, friend, ride in peace.”
