Threads Vol. 6

April 18, 2014

IMGA0153Small_zpsfece243f

Man, I don’t know about you, but this week flew by! It’s Friday, so that seems to be the time we’ve been taking a look at Bikeguide to see what they have going on over on the board. We’ve picked up two interesting threads that will get you thinking or have you laughing your ass off to look at!

The first one we picked out is 3D Printing Titanium Parts! There’s been a lot of talk about 3D printing lately and it seems like there’s been more and more people looking into how to make it work for bikes. There’s been a few uses of titanium that are proving to be more affordable than CNC machining and it seems like the concept is getting even closer to actually being used. We even get a look at George French of G-Sport‘s personal 3D printing setup he has been using to prototype designs. Well worth looking into!

The second thread we’ve picked out is for anyone looking to laugh. The Post Internet Funnies (NSFW) thread has a ton of hilarious meme’s, Facebook screen shots, .GIFS and more. This one hits the Not Safe For Work Zone, so only check this out if your boss or mom isn’t around, haha.

This is just two of the thousands of threads that cover BMX to really anything you can think up over on Bikeguide, so head over there and take a look at Bikeguide.org. It’s also FREE to create an account and get in on this, so get to it!

Threads Vol. 3

March 21, 2014

standard-sta-1_600x

It’s that time of the week again for us to take a look at some interesting threads that are popping up over on Bikeguide! This week, in The Bike Shop, there’s been a pretty interesting thread that will probably take a lot of you guys who have been riding for a while down memory lane. The FRAME HISTORY? has everyone talking about the history of frames they have rode over the years. Some go waaaaay back and I guarantee you will say “Ooooh! I remember that one!” a bunch of times. Definitely an interesting read and a good one to get in on!

The second thread is probably one that’s catching my eye again because my neighbor has been spending the last few days revving his engine on his Harley to get it ready for the season. It’s been in the upper 30’s and people are busting out their motorcycles here in Minnesota… I shit you not! The Motorcycles thread is 120 pages long and filled with every kind of motorcycle you could possibly think of. Anyone who is into motorcycles, or considering getting into them will be able to kill a lot of time paging through this one! Take a peek!

That wraps up this weeks round of Threads! As always, there’s a TON of stuff to check out on Bikeguide, so go take a peek and maybe get yourself setup with a FREE account if you haven’t yet — Bikeguide.org!

Photogallery: Texas Toast Jam 2013

October 23, 2013

IMG_8481_mustsee_600x

Over the weekend, the 3rd annual Texas Toast Jam invaded Austin, Texas. Riders from all around the world made the voyage to this BMX mecca with nothing but good times in sight. Between the actual contests, the after parties all of the amazing people who were in town for the weekend and the weather holding out, the weekend was the perfect example of what BMX is all about — having fun.
After missing out the past two years, I decided there was no way in hell that I could possibly miss this one. I finally had things line up and I was able to make my first trip to Austin happen, and it was one of the best experiences I could have had.
I’m sure over the past few days you have seen a ton of coverage from the videos and photos that have surfaced. I quickly decided once I saw 20+ cameras out at all times, that I was going to make this trip a vacation and not about work. I took the slacker route and took my time to get my photos together instead of rushing to be the first one with coverage from the event.
After sifting through the 350+ photos I had on my memory card, I was able to narrow it down to 34 of my favorite photos I shot from the weekend where I compiled them into a photogallery for your viewing pleasure. Let’s take a peek!

The BMX Economics

July 30, 2013

Edit: This graphic, which was a quick 5 minute photoshop job, has been a large focus for a lot of criticism lately… Sadly, more than the words. This graph is not accurate at all, and was simply just a form of showing that there are more and more knock off BMX brands popping up every day producing more and more products causing there to be more supply than demand. I don’t have numbers to verify, and I sure as shit know I wouldn’t deny it being inaccurate but there are no numbers to verify, just constant complaints about there being too many brands now days… It was just something to go with the text. Apologies to anyone who was offended by this. I’ll put a picture of my room mates dogs red rocket or something that has no relevance if something like this comes up again.

2013 has been a really weird year for the BMX industry. I’m sure the majority of riders don’t really know or care because most of you are just worried about when and where you’re going to ride next and and that’s about it… But I’m sure some of you who pay a little more attention to the industry side have been seeing changes or even brands and riders talking about how times have been rough. When Dave and I were talking about some different things the other day, we got on the subject of how some things have changed over the years that I personally feel has caused the BMX economy to hit a recession so to speak. I figured since nobody really has talked about it before, I’d put together a little something explaining my perspective and what I think is going on. Curious to what the hell I’m thinking? Let’s get into this…

Through The Lens: Custom Made – Native BMX

June 26, 2013

Native BMX custom seats

One of the things that I love most about doing this column is the fact that I have full creative control week after week. There is no one telling me what to do or how to do it. As someone who has worked in the creative industry for over a decade now there is nothing better than creating an idea from scratch and watching it come to life. That is exactly what this week’s column is all about. I recently spent some time hanging out with James Covington, the owner of Native BMX, and got the chance to pick his brain about the custom leather seats that he makes. Not very many people are out there working with their bare hands, using timeless techniques and creating truly custom pieces. It’s one of those things that you have to appreciate. In today’s BMX industry parts are and can be about as cookie cutter as they come. Companies literally just take the same parts as other companies and just stamp their name on them and call them their own. To me, there is nothing good about that. The fact that there are people out there like James giving you the option to truly add a personal touch to your bike is what makes me think there is hope for BMX after all. The reason why most of us ever got involved with riding in the first place was to stand out from the crowd and not follow the normal path that was laid out in front of us. Find out more about the whole process and give some respect to someone out there making quality, unique, American-made products that could potentially last a lifetime.
