Cult – Crew Freecoaster Hub

Cult have released their new Crew Freecoaster hub…

Cult Crew Freecoaster Hub BMX

A few weeks ago Cult released a photo of their new Crew Freecoaster hub that featured a unique looking hub shell that lead us to believe they had been doing some research and development of a new freecoaster system. There was pretty limited details at that point, and we’ve been curious what is going on inside that hub since.

Today we spotted the Crew Freecoaster Hub on the Cult website with a better look at the hub, but still pretty limited details…

“All new design… Black CREW FC hub…

Comes with non drive side Hubguard…

LHD or RHD…”

So, we decided to search around a little more and it looks like this one is just starting to hit shops. The guys at Kunstform in Germany have the hub listed on their website with these details…

“The Cult “Crew” Freecoaster is a stable street freecoaster and was developed and tested together with the the Cult-team. The recent version of the reliable functioning Cult “Crew” Freecoaster is now available as a male version and have a heat treated CrMo 14mm hollow axle and large bearings .
Facts Cult “Crew” Freecoaster

Material:
Shell: 6061-T6 aluminum, 36H
Axle: 14mm Male, hollow, CrMo, heat treated, with 6mm allen key insert
Cones: CrMo, with threat
Nuts: CrMo, for 17mm wrench or nut
Driver: 9T, LHD
Cone: CrMo
Bearing: Sealed bearings
Extras: Variable adjustable gap by adding or removing spacer rings, incl. 1x Non Driver Side Nylon Hubguard
”

What we do know is the hub utilizes a freecoaster design that is different than their Match Freecoaster (which is no longer listed on the Cult website), it comes in black for the only color, right and left side drive, and it even comes with a non-drive side nylon hub guard. It also sounds like it uses spacers to adjust the slack like the Match hub, and most other freecoaster hubs.

UPDATE: We got word from Neal at Cult about what’s going on inside the hub along with a photo of the driver itself…
“We removed the needle bearing in the driver, and the taper roller bearing in the hub shell to keep the price down. We also replaced the old ball spring system with a more durable heavy duty spring and o-ring design.”

Cult Crew Freecoaster Hub BMX

What really surprised us is the price. The hub is available for $149.99, which is more affordable than most of the other freecoasters available. You can pick this hub up through BMX shops and mail-orders that carry Cult worldwide starting now.

Sneak Peek: Cult – Crew Coaster

Cult have a new freecoaster cooking…

Cult Crew Coaster BMX Freecoaster Hub

Here’s a little gem we just spotted from Cult! It looks like they’ve been working on a new freecoaster that they’re calling the Crew Coaster. Not much for information on the BMX hub beyond the name and this photo, but it does appear to have an interesting looking shell that is slim like a cassette on one half and a larger body on the drive side wrapped in Cult logos. This leads us to believe that it’s probably not using the KHE internals like their existing hub (and about 90% of all the other freecoasters out), but we could be wrong. Our bet would be on different internals, though. We’ll keep you posted when we know more.

What’s also interesting is that the photo is from the trails… We might be over analyzing it, but maybe it has the ability to switch between cassette and freecoaster like the Z-Coaster or the Ezra coaster from a few years back… That could be interesting, too.

Let’s take a look at the Supreme Cassette hub from Wethepeople…

Wethepeople BMX Supreme Cassette Hub

Although the Freecoaster has become a dominant choice for BMX riders over the past few years, there are still a large number of riders who are still putting their cassette hubs to good use. There are even a number of riders switching back to cassette from what we have been seeing. Either way, Wethepeople have offered their Supreme Cassete Hub for a while now and it has held true to being a reliable hub that gets the job done. The crew at Wethepeople have given the hub an upgrade and it now comes with injection molded nylon / fiberglass hub guards stock to help ensure you’re able to protect the hub from all the grinds.
