Product: Sunday – Cyclone Freecoaster Hub

February 25, 2016

sunday-bikes-cyclone-freecoaster-bmx-hub

Have you been considering picking up a new freecoaster hub? If you’re a fan of the new Odyssey Clutch Freecoaster, then you’re in luck because the Cyclone freecoaster from Sunday Bikes is here. This hub, which utilizes the same design and internals as the Clutch freecoaster that is based around the KHE style with patent pending changes not found in other hubs, is a slightly more affordable version of the Clutch hub. This hub starts out with a 6061-T6 aluminum CNC machined, 36-hole hub shell. The only difference? The Cyclone doesn’t feature the metal slider that allows you to adjust the slack of the hub externally without having to take the hub apart like you can on the Clutch, which is more of less a downside if or when you decide to adjust the slack.

Inside, you can find a oversized 4130 chromoly female axle with a 14mm non-drive side bolt and a 3/8″ drive side bolt with a 14mm adaptor that creates a lighter weight and stronger axle than a traditional 14mm male axle. There’s a circle metal plate on the drive side that is designed to absorb axial loads and disburse it through the shell and the larger bearing on the non-drive side to protect the driver from blowing out. Next, there’s a two-piece plastic ring that controls the amount of slack by simply adjusting a grub screw with a 2.5 hex allen key. Along with that plastic ring, there’s a durable drag mechanism that eliminates the need to drill out the axle for the two ball bearings and spring that is found on other KHE based hubs. Doing this increases the strength of the axle because it is not compromised when drilled.

The Cyclone freecoaster hub is available in right and left side drive with a 9-tooth sealed chromoly driver, black for the only color option and a weight of 22.5 oz. It also comes with an option hub guard that you can choose to use, or not use. The Cyclone will be available through BMX shops and mail-orders for $169.99 – $20 cheaper than the Clutch hub that retails for $189.99.

In short, the Cyclone is the Clutch freecoaster, minus the ability to externally adjust the slack. Got it?

You can learn more about this system by checking out our Insight on the Odyssey Clutch Freecoaster, which includes videos explaining the internals in detail.
