BMX Stem Geometry Explained

March 5, 2019

Are you thinking about picking up a new BMX stem, but you aren’t really sure what all of those measurements really mean? Here’s a video Brant Moore put together going in-depth on the different measurements like reach, rise and stack height, along with a measurement you might not have heard of called extension. Along with that, Brant discusses some of the different features on stems like CNC machining for weight savings and cleaner looks, a wider stem for increased strength, the 1″ OD size that brands like Wethepeople, BSD and Cult have been trying out, the grooves that Flybikes offer on their stems, knurling, etc. Brant also covers solid and hollow bolts, and a few other things. This will definitely help if you are curious what you need to know when it comes to stem geometry and features. Hit play and take it all in!

“BMX stem geometry appears quite simple at first glance, and for all practical applications of stem geometry, it is as simple as it seems.
However, there is more than meets the eye and a lot to talk about in regards to BMX stems and their geometry.

Hopefully this video can help you make an educated decision the next time you’re in the market for a new stem!” – Brant Moore

Cult – Dakota Roche 1″ OD Bar & Stem

February 11, 2019

It looks like your options for the larger 1″ oversized bars and stems have grown. Wethepeople and BSD have offered the size for about two years now, but it really hasn’t caught on too much. It looks like Cult have decided to give it a shot and have released their new Dakota Roche signature 1″OD Dak Bars and Dak Stem for you to check out. Above is a short promo filled with some heavy clips from Dak you won’t want to miss and below is specs and details on both items. Just remember, if you decide to make the switch to the 1″ OD size, you’ll need BOTH bars and a stem!

First off, let’s explain the size… The traditional BMX bars and stem size works well, but with the way BMX riders have progressed and been sending it on bigger and gnarlier setups (IE: Dak’s video above), the larger diameter gives you increased strength and more stem grab to prevent breaking and resist slipping. This is definitely ideal for the crazier riders out there that have had issues with breaking bars.

Cult Dak 1" OD Stem Dakota Roche

DAKOTA ROCHE SIGNATURE DAK 1″ OD STEM

The Dakota Roche signature DAK 1″ OD stem is made from CNC machined 6061 aluminum with a 51mm reach and 32mm rise. The stem has the larger 1″ diameter for clamping with beveled edges, a rounded back, solid chromoly bolts and a recessed top for a flush fork cap. The body of the stem also has an engraved Dak logo. Available in Black only for $64.99 through Cult dealers worldwide and online.

Cult Dak Bars 1" OD oversize bars BMX

DAKOTA ROCHE SIGNATURE DAK 1″ OD BARS

The Dakota Roche signature Dak bars in the 1″ OD size are made from 100% heat-treated and butted chromoly tubing with a 28″ width, 11-degrees of backsweep and 2-degrees of upswpeep. The bars feature that larger 1″ diameter tubing where the stem clamps, then tapers down to the standard size so they will feel like traditional bars. There’s cult lines on the ends to help trim the bars down if you need to as well.

The Dak 1″ OD bars come in Black and Chrome color with 8.85″ and 9.5″ rise options for $64.99 through BMX shops and mail-orders that carry Cult worldwide.

Reminder: You need BOTH a 1″ OD stem and 1″ OD bars. You can’t take your existing bars or stem and match them with the larger size, unless you already have a WTP or BSD stem or bars with that same size.

Insight: Frelo Bikes – Unholy Stem

June 8, 2018

Take a closer look at the brand new Unholy Stem from Frelo Bikes!

Frelo Bikes Unholy BMX Stem

When it comes to BMX stems, we see a lot of very similar designs. Not because people aren’t able to come up with something better, but the fact that riders like clean, simple and strong. Why fix what you know already works, right? We’ve seen some pretty unique stems come and go over the years with big cut outs, unique compression systems and more, but you can’t go wrong with the look and reliability of the classic top load stem design.

When it came time for Frelo Bikes to design their first stem, they knew they wanted something that would be clean, but have a few unique touches so it wasn’t just another topload stem. They ended up with their new Unholy Stem that has a few details that help stand out a bit. This stem is Multi-Tiered CNC Machined from 6061-T6 alloy with a 50mm reach and 35mm rise, smooth beveled edges and extra machining to save weight, which is pretty straight forward. What you might not notice right off the bat is that the bolts are missing from the top of the stem. That’s because they’ve gone with a top plate that holds the bars in place with four bolts coming in from the bottom to leave the top with a smooth look and plenty of room for the Frelo Bikes logo.

Another detail you might have noticed from the picture above, is that the top plate also has four small pegs for the bolts to help ensure the stem is aligned properly when threading and to help prevent over tightening and pinching your bars. That alone is a nice added touch that helps it stand out a lot.

Spinning the stem around, you can also find a unique fork clamping area that is offset for a unique look, and a recessed top for a flush compression cap and weight savings.

Frelo Bikes Unholy BMX Stem

The Unholy Stem from Frelo Bikes accomplished the goal of creating a BMX stem that mixed the look of a classic Top Load stem with a few unique features to give it their own twist that helps it stand out. Add in the bonus that the stem is also made in the U.S.A., and you have a great option for your bike. You can pick the Unholy Stem up for $60 through BMX shops and mail-orders that carry Frelo Bikes or direct from the FRELO BIKES WEBSTORE in Black and Polished now!
