Sneakpeek: Odyssey – Keychain

September 20, 2012

Photobucket

I bumped into Jim Bauer from Odyssey and he had in his hands a new piece they are working on that nobody has seen yet. It looks like they are pushing things in a new direction with chains and I’m pretty stoked on this. I won’t try and explain it myself since he gave me this little bit of info below that explains it all perfect.

“1. Oversize Hollow Pins. Traditional chain pins are 3mm in diameter, ours are 5mm. This not only makes them stronger but gives a bigger contact with the plates and so makes them harder to push or bend out. Additionally the pins are riveted in place.

2. Thicker but lower profile side plates. With an extra narrow waist to each plate they are harder to catch on things. But at 1.4mm thick they are substantially thicker than the plates on any other chain and 50% harder to bend than the thickest existing 1.2mm chain plates.

3. Unique Master and Half links with threaded pins. Break and re-join the chain with just a 3mm hex key. Half link plates are less narrowed at the bends to increase stiffness and minimise stretch. By eliminating the use of a chain breaker to re-join the chain we can ensure factory tightness on all the pins.

4. Low overall weight. By using material as efficiently as possible we have strengthened every component of the chain and kept the weight the same as our Bluebird chain.

5. Low stretch. By using a standard alternating plate pattern and limiting to a single beefed up half link chain stretch is minimised, which in turn maximises sprocket and driver lifespan.”

It’s a little hard to see but here’s the masterlink. Inside you can find 2 small 3mm allen key slots that you can take the chain on and off with.

They don’t have a release date but I could imagine it’s not too far out since I spotted some branding on the chain which usually indicates they are getting close. Probably sometime in 2013 if I could guess. Who knows though. Overall, I really like this idea though. What do you think? Leave us some comments!

Product: Stolen – Balland Chain

May 31, 2012

Stolen have revamped their half-link chain and come up with this new Balland chain. Below is all the info on the changes they made for this new chain.

“ We revisited our half link chain to improve upon the strength and stretch resistance from our previous Shackle chain. The Balland chain will feature thicker side plates as well as hardened pins for a drastically more durable half link chain. Every chain is teflon coated for a smooth engagement and to provide wear resistance. There are 85 links to each Balland chain and a master pin for ease of installation. The rounded side plates are compatible with all driver size options currently available. The team has been testing this chain vigorously this past year and it has proven to hold up to everything they’ve been putting it through. Pick yours up today in Black, Blue, Red, Silver, or White.”

Giveaway: KMC Kool Knight Chain

October 4, 2011

KMC Kool Knight

Some of you who have been checking out the site for a while now might recall the review I did on KMC‘s prototype “Kool Knight” chain around a year or so ago. At the time, the idea was still new (before DK announced their version) and they were just in the testing phase of things. They asked if I wanted to give one a go and give them feedback on it. After the review was done and I felt I had done sufficient “testing”, KMC had asked for me to send it back to them so they could conduct stress testing and such.
Fast forward to earlier last week and I get an email from KMC asking if I would be interested in getting a final version of the chain that’s finally in production and should be available soon. Then the other day I had a box from them show up and I thought it felt a little heavy. That’s because they sent through a few extras for me to GIVE AWAY to you guys.
So, here’s how we are going to run this contest. You have TWO chances to enter. One – write in the comments “I want that chain!” with your name and actual email address so I can contact you if you win. Two – Head over to The Union’s FACEBOOK and “Like” us. Then comment “I want that chain!” on the photo of the chain that will be on the wall. It’s as easy as that. I’ll pick three winners on MONDAY, OCTOBER 10th. So please, check your email and Facebook messages that day.

Check out a little more information on the chain along with a few photos and a video after the jump…
