The Making of the Flatland Tricky App
Yesterday we caught our first glimpse at the Flatland Tricky How-To App, now today we spotted a video on Flat Matters showing us just how the app that shows you how to perform flatland tricks were made. This BMX video shows you the crazy green screen setup they used to capture the riding tricks and the program they used to turn it into a 4-D rendering that can be viewed from every angle, frame by frame.
There’s a lot that goes into developing an app like this, and it’s pretty wild to see how they bring actual riding together with cameras, computers, editing and programming software to produce something like this. It also leads us to believe they’re cable of building off this to produce an actual BMX game that allows you to put these tricks together and control the rider. We’re not sure if it will actually become a game or not, since the how-to app is just about to roll out on iTunes and then Android in early 2016, but we could only hope, right?
Either way, this looks like a rad app if you’re looking to learn how to do flatland tricks.
Brian Tunney – Insta Smith
It’s always a good day when Brian Tunney drops a new BMX video giving us a look at what he’s been working on. We just spotted this quick one over on Flat Matters giving us a look at a bunch of combos Brian has been doing to incorporate the brakeless Smith Decade into. Take a peek and see for yourself how it’s done!
“Growing up, one of my all-time favorite tricks was a smith decade. About ten years ago, I took my back brakes off because maintaining them was a pain in the butt and I wanted a more simplistic approach to my bike setup. But I lost that one trick. This past summer, after a few dreams of doing that trick, I learned the brakeless version but wanted to incorporate more of the past and present into my riding, so I marched to Empire BMX and reinstalled a gyro, back brakes and all of the ridiculous detachable cable guides that come with my bike. The result has been a very good re-connection of me with my 15-year-old self. These are but a few of the things I’ve filmed with back brakes, ’80s inspiration and abundant, humid sunshine in the past few months. More is on the way soon, thanks for watching.”

Martti Kuoppa – 10 Stemlashes
Just when you thought you had some serious nose balance and whiplashes on lock… We spotted this video of Martti Kuoppa pulling off 10 Stemlashes in a row over on Flat Matters and we were completely blown away. Not only is he doing a nose manual, but he’s standing on his stem while doing 10 consecutive whiplashes. So damn wild. Check this BMX video out already!
Viki Gomez – Something in the Way
Whenever we see Viki Gomez‘s name pop up over on Flat Matters, we know we are in for a treat. Viki has been working on this BMX video since the start of the year, where he has been pushing his boundaries and trying to add some more tricks that he is not traditionally known for to his line up. Needless to say, he’s had a lot of success with pushing these limits. Check out the video to see for yourself!
“Creativity is a blessing, it is my life! This “unfinished” project have been filmed from January 2015 until August 2015, trying to find a new me, trying to go out of my comfort zone and trying to be different. When I go my own way I feel free. These are moments that I want to share and give to Flatland. It is infinity! The search never ends, it feels infinity when you search! Keep the search..this is life!
Thank you for watching!” – Viki Gomez
Matthias Dandois – 1st Place at O’Marisquiño
We haven’t seen much footage surface from this years O’Marisquiño contest over in Spain… Yet. But, we did spot this BMX video showing us how Matthias Dandois won the flatland contest over on Flat Matters! These runs will make you dizzy as hell and we have no idea how Matthias does what he does!
Lee Musselwhite – Black Widow Switch
We’re always pumped when we find some new Lee Musselwhite footage over on Flat Matters! Here’s a quick clip of Lee pulling off a new move he has cooked up out of his signature Spider Glide that’s called the Black Widow Switch. Lee explains below… So insane!
“Getting back on to the bike out of rolling my signature limbless move the “Spider Glide” is hard enough but getting back on without using my hands straight into another no handed trick has been in my head for a long time.
This might look like a small move but its stupid hard,
I dubbed it the “Black Widow switch”
Filmed and edited by Nick Wotton”
