After a long wait that felt like an eternity thanks to the anticipation, the “Above Below” video was finally released on iTunes today! This video, produced by Monster and DIG is a different approach to the traditional BMX full-length video featuring the likes of Dakota Roche, Dan Lacey, Nathan Williams, Ben Lewis, Ed Zunda and Fernando Laczko. With so much hype leading up to this one, it was hard not to hit that download video and see just what these guys have been working on with film maker, Rich Forne! After checking out the video, we decided to do a quick review for those of you still on the fence about checking this one out!
Orange Juice – “Above Below” Interview – Part 1
This is awesome. Roy Van Kempen from Orange Juice caught up with Monster‘s crew from “Above Below” to talk about their experiences while filming for the video. Part one, they sit down and get some “gifts” out to remind some of them of the funnier things that happened to them on the trip. Check out what Fernando Laczko, Ben Lewis, Nathan Williams and Dan Lacey had to say. I’d assume we’ll be hearing from Dakota Roche and Ed Zunda in part two!
“Above Below” Pre-Order Available
The Monster “Above Below” video is available for Pre-Order on iTunes NOW! This video not only promises to be an absolute banger, but all proceeds go to charity! Check out more details below!
“ABOVE BELOW is the first full-length BMX feature from Monster Energy in association with DIG BMX. This two part film sees a diverse group of riders Ben Lewis, Dakota Roche, Fernando Laczko, Ed Zunda, Nathan Williams and Dan Lacey travel the world pushing the limits of BMX progression under the watchful lens of the director, Richard Forne. Ten months is a very short period of time to try and produce one video, let alone a two part release, but as you will see in ABOVE, the riders gave it everything they had and came through with something very special. BELOW then shows you how each rider achieved their goals in the face of setbacks from not only security and the eye of the law but also frustration and injury. By voicing the viewpoints of some of the BMX world’s top riders and industry figureheads, BELOW taps into the true meaning of the sport, culture and its ambitious yet creative approach. ABOVE BELOW documents what it is to have a goal and achieve that at any cost. Watch this and whether you have ridden a BMX bike your whole life or never even set foot on a pedal, this is a movie that will inspire you to get out and get at it. All proceeds go to the ‘Road 2 Recovery’ charity, dedicated to helping action sport athletes worldwide. Sit back, watch and enjoy; thank you to all who supported!” – PRE-ORDER HERE!

Monster – On The Radar with Matty Cranmer
We’ve been seeing young Matty Cranmer’s name popping up more and more over the past few years and it looks like all the sessions with his older brother, Scotty Cranmer, at the Incline Club have paid off because he’s an absolute SHREDDER now. Check out this little bio video Monster dropped where we get to know Matty a little better and see just how good he really is! Definitely one to keep an eye out for in the future!
Monster – Speed & Style 2014
Although the Texas Toast Jam was going on last weekend, there were still a few other big events going on like the Monster Speed & Style contest in Las Vegas! They basically took a traditional dirt course, doubled it so two riders can go head to head to throw down tricks, make it through the fastest and pull away the win with the best overall score! Check out highlights in the video above! It looks like a few guys bounced around between Las Vegas and Austin this past weekend…
“Paying a bit of homage to the Supercross event going on as the mainstay, Monster Energy threw a completely unique event that combined racing with dirt jumping on a switchable course. Two paths, two riders, two runs, and the lowest combined score counts. Yup, each rider could choose his destiny, going for speed or tricks and the scoring system laid out for the judges would make the call.
Done in a bracket style with 12 riders: round 1, round 2, semi-finals, finals…you only really have to look at the results to appreciate how diverse this event can really be.” – Ride BMX
Adam Kun – Dubai or Die
Spotted this amazing new Adam Kun edit over on Flat Matters. The crew at Monster sent Adam over to Dubai to take in this crazy city and throw down some amazing riding in some unique spots. Definitely one you will want to see!
“This summer the BMX flatland World Champion decided to completely change the scenery for his riding and spend some time in Dubai. The business and cultural center of Middle East may not be known for street riding since most of the urban activities there are done in air conditioned buildings. Turns out the riding there is hot!” – Monster
Monster Recon Tour 2014 – The Kitchen
“MONSTER ARMY RECON TOUR ROUND 4
Brad Thomas gets gold in the open division at the Monster Army Recon Tour Round 4 in South Bend, Indiana at the iconic Kitchen BMX Park. Isaiah Potter took home first place in the 16 + division as well as Eddie Rovi taking another gold medal in the 13-15 division.
This is the second year that Brett Banasiewicz and his family have opened their doors to their world-class facility. Much like last year the competition was intense and the tricks even bigger. Banasiewicz built this facility just over three years ago when he was considered one of the best BMX athletes in the world. Unfortunately, he had a life-changing injury, but remains passionate about growing and evolving the sport of BMX.
The open division was full of excitement with all the competitors going for broke. Front flips, flip whips, and big transfers were a common theme in this division. Thomas walked away with the golden ticket and advanced to the Recon Tour finals. Coming from California he impressed the judges with his overall use of the course, 360 combinations, transfer lines, and massive superman seat grabs. Zach Shoemaker was also consistent and had a big bag of tricks including 360 double tail whips, flair variations, and multiple 360 combinations that landed him the 2nd place finish. Gage Leiter took third place and impressed with tricks like 360 double tail whips, and 360 double bar spins.
In the 16 + division Potter once again took home first place for the second consecutive event. He was unstoppable with his flairs, 360’s, and linking his tricks on the step-down section. The second place spot was earned by Jonathan King who was by far the fastest competitor the judges saw all day. He flew through the course with lightning speed doing multiple bar spin variations and trying massive transfer lines. Dalton Edwards impressed the judges with his street-style tricks like double peg to bar and 360 off the step down to flat, which secured his third place position.
In the 13-15 division Rovi dominated for the second contest in a row and took home first place throwing down huge tricks like superman seat grabs and double whips. Nico Vanderheyden took home second place by using the entire course and his technical consistency. Alex Duleba finished in 3rd place with big box tricks and his fluid, smooth style. Local shredder Hannah Roberts just missed out on the podium, but threw big tricks like x-up transfers and 360 bar spins.
Thanks to the Hookit brand partners: Monster Army, Replay XD, Hyper Bike co., Movietickets.com, Pro-Tec, Sunringle, Deft Family, ODI, Snafu, Fugoo, Vans, and Vital BMX. Big thanks to Brett, Bill, and Lisa Banasiewicz as well as the entire Kitchen Staff. Also thanks to Ryan Guettler, Kris Fox, Joey Marks, and Rich Hoppie.
