Monster Recon Tour – San Jose, California
Here’s a look at all of the wild riding that went down during the Monster Recon Tour stop in San Jose, California recently! The park is dialed and there’s definitely a ton of shredders that made their way out for this one. Even Colony‘s Alex Hiam, who has been hanging out in California recently, made his way out and took home the win!
“The seventh stop of the Monster Army Recon Tour presented by Replay XD was on fire, literally! Not only was the riding insane, but the temperatures reached well into the 100 + range. Despite the heat, all of the competitors were not backing down from the massive concrete park known as Lake Cunningham Regional Skatepark in San Jose, CA. Competitors traveled from all over California and surrounding states to compete for the glory of being the best. The day started off with the youngest competitor the Recon Tour has witnessed yet. Four year old Mason Moreno showed us that the future of BMX will have very strong talent by impressing the well known judges Victor Salazar, Kris Fox, and Alex Landeros. Ryan Guettler didn’t let the heat affect his announcing skills and kept the energy of the crowd alive all day. As the day went on the riding kept increasing in skill level just like the heat. The Play Open division ended the day in a huge way with all of the competitors putting everything on the line. 14 year old Paul Shariff took home second place by destroying the course and tricking everything in his sight. He won over the crowd with huge tricks like his front flip and his intensity throughout his run. Alex Hiam from Australia took home the first place position by doing tricks no one else was throwing. Tricks like decades, 360 whip to bar, flairs, and his creative lines was the reason he walked away with the number one position and the all expense paid trip to Mike Spinner’s Play AM Finals in Florida.
Special thanks to our tour partners Monster Army, Hookit, Replay XD, A3, Vans, XRyderz, Madcatz, Pro-Tec, Movietickets.com, Hyper BMX, Mike Spinner, Ryan Guettler, Fat Tony, the City of San Jose, Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park, Cindy Rebhan, Andrew Freeman , and Josh Balogh.“
Monster Recon Tour – Mission Valley
Here’s a look at what went down during the Mission Valley stop of the Monster Recon Tour. Looks like a heavy turn out and some wild riding went down. Take a peek!
“The first stop of the West Coast Monster Army Recon Tour presented by Replay XD was amazing. We kicked things off here in the West at the Mission Valley YMCA Krause Family Skate & Bike Park. Kids were pouring in from all over California, Neveda, Arizona, and even a couple from the East Coast. Ryan Guettler was on the Mic and the kids were throwing massive tricks all day trying to impress the judges. The sponsors were keeping the energy alive in the vendor area by blasting tunes and grilling food all day. All of the divisions had an extreme amount of talent and the Play Open division was stacked with competition. Rounding out the top five was Parker Heath, Derek Kenny, Wesley Hark, Declan Brooks, and Ross Lanier. Ross earned the first place position and the all expense paid trip to Mike Spinner’s backyard by putting together a run that was filled with high intensity and huge back to back tricks.
Special thanks to our tour partners Monster Army, Hookit, Replay XD, A3, Vans, XRyderz, Madcatz, Pro-Tec, Movietickets.com, Hyper BMX, Mike Spinner, Ryan Guettler, Fat Tony, and Charlie and Lazslo from YMCA.

Through The Lens: Freedom of Speech with Jamie Bestwick
I have to be honest with you here, there are times when I sit around and think for hours, days and sometimes a full week until an idea for a new column pops into my head. Week after week I have been searching for ways to keep things fresh and ways to keep people interested. I simply try to give a reason to check back every Wednesday to see what the new TTL will be about. For those that don’t know, I have officially started my East Coast summer at Woodward and for this week’s column I am very stoked to present an interview with vert legend Jamie Bestwick. Jamie is arguably the best vert rider on the planet and although he doesn’t like to admit that, I doubt there are any riders out there that would argue that fact. He is the type of rider that has an incredible drive to be the best at what he does. He has had a wild journey in BMX so far and has set the bar to an almost unreachable height. Jamie has won eight X Games gold medals in a row and shows zero signs of slowing down anytime soon. He is at the peak of his career and somehow remains level headed, modest and as down to earth as it gets. We recently spent some time hanging out on a quiet afternoon in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania and while we were hanging out I fired some questions his way, and this was the result. Enjoy.

Monster – Recon Tour: Round 5 – The Animal House
The next stop of the Monster Recon Tour landed in Greenville, North Carolina where Daniel Dhers opened up the doors of The Animal House for all the young guns to come through and show everyone what they had. Take a look at what went down in this video!
“The Monster Army Recon Tour presented by Replay XD, held the East Coast Finals at the Animal House in Greenville, NC. The Animal house has been around since the mid 00’s and was owned and operated by the great, Dave Mirra. Now in 2013, pro BMX athlete Daniel Dhers has control of the Animal House. Daniel rides and trains at this facility and also operates the park. All of the athletes were ecstatic to be able to compete in a park where legends like Mirra and Dhers train on a daily basis.
The event was amazing throughout the day and a magnitude of huge tricks were being thrown down. Athletes were putting their bodies on the line trying to gain the top spot in their division. In order to take the top spot athletes were throwing tricks like front flips, double whips, 720s, and more to give them the edge. In the Play Open division, Jake Leiva, traveling all the way from Tehachapi, CA, ended up walking away with 1st place and the honor of getting invited to the Play Open Finals at Mike Spinner’s park on September 7th. Jake was riding on another level than the field and even the great, Dave Mirra was on hand to witness the magic of his riding. We now know why Greenville, NC has been named Pro Town USA, and we wish Jake the best of luck on becoming the next great rider of our time.“
