I think at some point, a lot of us in BMX dream about doing something more with it. Not just riding, but getting into the other things from the photography, writing, filming and editing, design and everything you can some how tie into this crazy lifestyle we live. Cory Beal is one guy from Canada who has always been doing everything he can with BMX from being a sponsored rider and traveling all over to running the media game through Repset while managing side projects like screen printing.
One thing about Cory that I’ve always been a fan of is that he’s ALWAYS cooking on a new project and when he gets into something, he’s usually going at it balls deep and making sure it is done right.
A few weeks back we were talking about his new venture, Pandect which is a limited edition zine that he officially launched today. The first issue is ready to ship, so we figured it was a good time to talk with Cory to find out just what he’s got going on with this one… Let’s take a closer look!
On The Horizon: Freed Bikes
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been seeing more and more of a new Arizona based brand that’s getting the ball rolling with a line up of some quality American made products and a team loaded with up and coming shredders. Obviously, like everyone else, we were asking ourselves “Where the hell did Freed Bikes come from and what are they all about?”… So we got ahold of them to find out their story. Turns out that this new brand is already making some real solid moves forward with a strong belief in quality over quantity and the goal to help BMX grow over take it for all its got. Let’s take a closer look at this brand in this new On The Horizon!
On The Horizon: The Daily Grind
I think at some point in every BMX riders life, they dream of starting their own company. 99% of the time the idea never really goes beyond that. That wasn’t the case from Jon “Gremlin” Betchtold who almost accidently started The Daily Grind. What started out as a website for him to post photos and videos eventually lead to a hub guard. Shortly after that, bar ends, a hub and a pedal. It’s awesome seeing how ideas can grown and change and when those ideas are left to a guy who actually rides, seeing quality being the main concern is even better. The Daily Grind might be a new name to what is commonly referred to as a flooded market, they’re doing things different than the cookie cutter brands that have been coming and going pretty quick lately. I decided it was time to find out what this operation was all about and to give you guys a little background on what they’re all about. Let’s take a look!
On the Horizon: We Are Orange Juice
One thing I always get really stoked on is when people are going out and making their ideas and dreams happen. I’ve been a fan of Roy Van Kempen for quite a while and the website him and Tom Lammerse started a while back called We Are Orange Juice. Since it’s launch, they have been making moves to keep things fresh. A few weeks ago announced that they would be starting a full on lifestyle brand to accompany their blog with clothing and accessories sharing the Orange Juice name. I was really impressed with what they were able to produce for their first collection, so I decided it would be a good time to catch up with Roy to find out more about the brand, how they got moving in this new direction, the process of making it and happen and where they are going with it. Let’s check out what he had to say!

On The Horizon: Proper Bike Co.
The first thing I always think of when I think about Proper is their hubs. I’m not sure why that stands out, but I just remember back in the day seeing somebody spinning their front hub and it spun for a few minutes. It was the craziest thing, and I have always held that as a indicator in the quality of products the brand has produced since their inception in 2002. Over the years Proper have grown from a small company to a worldwide brand that has continued to always focus on quality over quantity.
I was recently talking with brand manager, Jamie Cameron, and he was giving me a little insight into some of the new projects they were cooking on. While we were talking about things all I could think is that they were well overdue for an On the Horizon. I know Proper is a well known brand, but I don’t think too many people really know too much beyond their products available and the team. So I tossed out the idea and we went to work.
This one is pretty special because not only do you get a real good understanding of the brand, we’ve also got a bunch of SNEAK PEEK shots of their new products that aren’t available yet, but will be soon. So let’s get into this already!

On The Horizon – Total BMX
A few years ago, a new brand emerged from two legends in the U.K BMX scene. One being the insanely technical and talented rider you know as Mark Webb and the other, a name you younger guys might not be as familiar with, Ronnie Remo. The brand? Total BMX.
Since their inception, the brand has grown into a well known name around the world that is stacked with some of the wildest riders in the world. Between the dialed products, their team riders taking top spots at contests around the world and the constant flow of edits that melt your brain, I figured it was due time we get ahold of these guys to find out what exactly they are all about.
We shot Ronnie a bunch of questions about the brand that I think will give you guys an even better understanding of just what this family is all about… Let’s take a look!
On the Horizon: Ipath
Photo: Andrew White
Over the years, Ipath has had a lingering presence in BMX. They’ve always hovered off to the side, doing their thing and creating some dialed shoes. It wasn’t until they brought on Brian Osborne that they started really putting the brand out there in BMX. When Brian joined the crew at Ipath, he brought along a few friends to kick some life back into the team; those friends would be Van Homan, Shane Weston, Seth Kimbrough and Alex Magallan. With the a new team all dialed in and the release of their fresh Fall / Winter 2012 line, I figured it was time to get Brian to answer some questions about his role with the company, the team, the brand as a whole and what they have cooking these days. Let’s see what he had to say!
On The Horizon: Our Wax
A couple months back, I had been seeing some tweets from Grant Castelluzzo and Mike Hinkens about some new wax they were cooking up for their selves to ride with. They were talking about testing and all these different things. For some reason the past year or so, a lot of different brands have been putting out their own wax but none seem to be as unique as what these guys were doing. It didn’t quite click until closer to them dropping the news that they were actually starting up their own company. Last week they launched the brand they are calling Our Wax with their new website and a promotional web video giving you a look at the product and some riding. We figured it would be cool to get ahold of them and find out what exactly they are doing. Let’s find out exactly what Our Wax is all about…
