Robbie Morales “The BMX In Our Blood” Podcast
Robbie Morales sits down for an interview on “The BMX In Our Blood” Podcast…
Here’s another interview Joe Dohrety knocked out during his time at at the FloriDeah Swampfest for The BMX In Our Blood podcast. This time around Joe sits down with Robbie Morales to talk about everything from how he got into BMX all the way through starting Cult on through what he has going on today, riders injuries, life in general and more. You already know this is one that’s worth listening to!
“Ok, I’m a little biased but for good reason. Robbie “Robo” Morales is the real deal. Has he been perfect? Admittedly, no. Who really is? Robbie openly talks about exactly this in the interview. What Robbie has been is an accomplished trail rider, racer, street rider, marketer, company owner and dedicated sponsor to his riders over the years. Having grown up around Robbie I have seen the sincere, the passionate, the obnoxious, the skilled, the fun loving…the everything that makes Robbie who he is today. Everyone learns as they go and Robbie has learned more than most of us in BMX, sometimes the hard way. Bottom line, I want people to get to know the Robbie I know. A mature man that owns everything he has done, perfect and not. I loved taking this interview on and digging into the mind of a passionate BMX lifer that has much left to give. I hope you feel the same by the end of the listen.
Find Robbie at @cultcrew on IG or through the www.cultcrew.com
And please, the next time you see Robbie or contact him on social media…thank him and tell him what an integral part of BMX he has been. We couldn’t and can’t do this without people like him!” – Joe Dohrety
Cult “Something New” Video + Robbie Morales Q&A
Cult coming through with a banger of a BMX video to officially welcome DAN FOLEY to their squad! If you have been paying attention to Dan’s Youtube channel and Instagram the past few weeks, you might have already figured this one out, but now it’s out for everyone to know! This video features Dan, Dakota Roche, Sean Ricany, Iz Pulido and Andrew Castaneda. Dan joining the team might not surprise some people since his buttery smooth style and everything he does fits well with the direction Cult is going. Hit play and check out all this goodness, then check out a few words from Robbie Morales about Dan joining the team and more!
“The title says it all, SOMETHING NEW, welcome aboard DAN FOLEY. Short and sweet, we made our annual trek out to the desert and kept the stoke high with the crew. Theres something special out there, hard to describe, but it’s real. Filmed and edited by our dude VEESH…”
Yoooo Robbie! How’s it going? It looks like you decided to drop a present early on everyone with this “Something New” video. How long has this project been in the works for?
Things are good and moving fast. As with most of our projects lately there done on the fly, so we headed out to Palm Springs for the annual DAK FRIDAY event at Kings Ride Shop and decided to invite Dan Foley to come out and film with Veesh and some of the crew for a bit. I think we created a cool edit that should motivate the viewer to ride.
We had a feeling the name “Something New” has to do with the addition of Dan Foley to the team. We know there’s a lot of thought and reasoning behind picking a new rider when it comes to Cult. What was it about Dan that stood out to you? Definitely a lot of thought on who gets on but with Dan, he embodies our style. He’s self motivated, rides his ass off with style, and has a awesome attitude. We previously tried to get something going awhile back but it didn’t work out, the time is right now and we are proud to have him aboard.
Obviously Dan has been one of those guys who has been super proactive in not only riding, but producing content which is always important these days. What are you most excited about when it comes to working with Dan?
Most of us are most impressed on his grind, he lives in a somewhat remote area for BMX but creates awesome content on his own, so we were psyched to provide a space where he could do his thing and work with a crew backing him.
We had noticed Dan was riding a Cult set up a few weeks back, but didn’t know for sure if it was just a hook up or the real deal. Is it hard to keep a secret like a new team addition these days with all the social media and video work?
Kind of but as the brand we decide when the time is right, same went for Ricany, people knew but we announced it when we felt it was right. Both guys put in work before they were fully on, that’s a sign of a real rider who is down for the brand.
It seems like over the course of the past year or two the team has been refined and dialed in more and more with guys like Sean Ricany getting into the mix. Is there any chance we’ll be seeing some other big surprises in the near future as far as the team goes?
We definitely have more plans for 2017, more working up guys from within and taking care of the legends who built the brand as well.
I know you like to keep Veesh and the rest of the team busy working on projects. Are there any plans for another full-length down the road? It has already been, what, like 2 years since “Small Talk” came out?
That’s the debate right now, we want to commit to a project, more info soon.
Cult will be going into its 7th year in 2017. What has been the biggest thing you have learned this past year when it comes to running a brand?
Wow, good question, I can honestly say I learn something everyday while running the brand. We are a small brand that takes on big things and tries to handle them with style and grace to the best of our ability. As things change so quickly in society and BMX we continue to stay the course and run the most intelligent brand we can.
The new 2017 range from the complete bikes, frames and parts are looking real good. What are you most stoked on for the new goods? Everything is available now, right?
Yes, we also just received a new softgoods drop with art from ADAM L.ROYE, the 2017 completes are the best bikes we have done yet, and we are constantly keeping the frames fresh with new colors and options.
That about wraps it up. Anything else you wanted to say?
Going into 2017 hopefully BMX can keep the positive vibes going, respecting all riders from all disciplines. We are all riders for fuck sake. Time to get over ourselves and get back to why we started riding in the first place, the love of BMX. Thanks Kurt for the questions and shouts to anyone who supports CULT.
Cult – Robbie Morales Bike Check
What’s one of the perks of being the owner of a bike company? Having that ability to dial in a new bike with all the latest and greatest that your brand makes. Cult posted up a quick Bike Check with the man in charge, Robbie Morales and his brand new SOS setup that he dialed in. This bike sticks with an all black setup with just a splash of purple to set things off. You can check out a couple more photos and more details over on the Cult website — Boss man’s new whip
On The Horizon: Cult
It’s been quite some time since we’ve done one of these On The Horizon pieces where we catch up with a brand to find out what they have going on these days and what’s coming down the road. The other day, the guys over at Cult released their brand new website along with their full range of 2016 product from complete bikes to frames and parts. Between that, Cult celebrating their 5 year anniversary a little while back and the constant flow of projects that the team and brand are working on, we felt like it would be a good time to hit up the boss man, Robbie Morales, and talk about what Cult has going on these days and to get a good look at some of the new 2016 product. So, if you’re curious as well… Let’s get into this!
Top 5’s – Robbie Morales and the First Five Years of Cult
With Cult celebrating its first five years of existence, it seemed like a fitting time to get ahold of Robbie Morales for a round of Top 5’s to find out some of his more memorable moments that he has had with everything that has been accomplished so far. There’s no doubt that Cult have made some waves in BMX in its short existence and we have no doubt that there are many more years to come. Between some heavy videos, a stacked team from around the world, countless trips and a lot of dialed BMX bikes, frames and parts, they’ve definitely accomplished some amazing things. Let’s check out what Robbo said!
Cult – “The First Five Years” Book
Today, the mailman dropped off a little surprise that we didn’t expect from the guys over at Cult. Inside, we found a copy of their new book “The First Five Years” that looks back on the first five years of the brands existence. The book is filled with photos, print ads and words that cover trips, events and really just a look at the diverse family that Robbie Morales and the team have formed since its inception in 2010.
It’s kind of crazy how something like this can spark a memory you forgot about. The first thing I thought looking into this was one from Interbike in 2009 hearing rumors that Robbie was working on something new and there would be some interesting things coming about. That was my 2nd or 3rd Interbike and the industry was still pretty new and unfamiliar territory to myself, but you could feel the excitement and tension revolving around how Cult all came to be. It was hard to not take notice and want to find out what was going on.
Since then, the entire Cult (CVLT for those of you who remember the early days) program has definitely proven that the decision to make some moves to do something on their own terms (I say they because it was far more than just Robbie that were driving forces behind making this happen) was right for them. Honestly, in BMX’s tight economy that has really seen some pretty rough times over the past few years, it wasn’t an easy accomplishment to even make it five years, but today they’re still here and one of the most well known brands in BMX. They have seen hardships, a good amount of resistance or hate from some riders and plenty of good times along the way and this book is a good reminder that BMX is more than just about tricks or bikes.
I know The Union wouldn’t be where it is today without the support of Cult, or really any of the other amazing brands in BMX that have been helping to grow and push this sport of ours in new directions and places, and this book is a reminder of that for us personally.
With that being said, I’d like to give a huge thank you to Robbie, Neal, Veesh, Javee and all the guys behind the scenes at Cult making that ship float on a daily basis. On to the next five years.
You can learn more about “The First Five Years” and pick up a copy for $19.95 in the Cult Webstore now.
