Haro – “Take The Risk” in Malaysia

November 25, 2014

Haro recently dropped Dennis Enarson, Tyler Fernengel, Mike Gray and Matthias Dandois in Malaysia for some time to explore the spots, meet the locals and experience the culture! Needless to say, these guys had a hell of a good time and this video Ride dropped shows just that! Hit play and take it all in!

Filmed and edited by Christian Rigal

“I’d been to Malaysia back in the early 2000’s. It was one of those trips where I saw three things: the airport, the hotel, and the contest area. I always wanted to go back to explore, and a decade later, the lure of a pro contest in a tropical country in Southeast Asia had me looking into tickets. Now was the chance!

As team manager, I become responsible for a lot of things. I have to design a trip. Who to take? Where to stay? What if it rains the whole time? I see the whole trip unfold in my head a thousand different ways well before we even board the plane. I have to do a lot of research before I purchase those tickets…I can’t have this trip fail, and heading to a place that no riders really visit is pretty risky. But, at least the event would take up most the time anyway…

First dudes on the trip were Mike Gray and Tyler Fernengel. They both joined the Haro team earlier in the year and it was their turn to hit the road. And as a bonus, they are young and inexperienced travelers that I hoped to introduce some culture to and give them a trip to remember. Matthias Dandois has traveled the entire world over and over again, but I was surprised to hear he had not yet visited Malaysia. Matthias is such a unique rider and he’s a positive guy to be around—he was coming for sure. Finally, Dennis Enarson got the call. We all know Dennis can ride any terrain, but he gets an automatic invite just for being the amazing person he is. We needed a filmer. After picking the crew, only one guy came to mind to join us and that was Christian Rigal. It’s invaluable to have a filmer the crew knows personally. And, the filmer is carrying around a heavy bag all day, filming try after try for sometimes hours, missing meals, getting dehydrated, and while we all enjoy the sunset, the filmer is usually getting a time lapse shot in and then has to stay up late logging footage. They are long days on the road and I knew Christian could handle the job as well as have a good time with us.” —Colin Mackay

Tyler Fernengel – Detroit to San Diego – Part 3

August 25, 2014

The 3rd and final installment of Tyler Fernengel’s “Detroit to San Diego” from Red Bull is now online! This time around Tyler gets wild on a rope swing and then they make the final haul to San Diego. Things didn’t quite go to plan, but after a little time off he was back to his riding! Take a peek! Did you miss the first two? Check out PART ONE and then PART TWO!

“Like many other BMX riders, Tyler Fernengel has felt the pull toward Southern California, with its year-round riding opportunities and wealth of street-riding spots. Recently, the 18-year-old Michigan native answered the call, making his way across the country to start a new chapter in San Diego.

In the video above (the last of a three-part series covering his move), Tyler swings — literally — through Salt Lake City, Utah, on his drive west, before pushing on to his new home. Once there, he meets up with a few of his new neighbors — including Dennis Enarson and Chad Kerley — to see how the sessions really go down in San Diego.

Tyler’s skills have been exploding to new levels over the last year, and now that he’s in the mix with some of the most amazing riders in the sport, there’s no telling what he’s going to drop next.”

Red Bull – Tyler Fernengel – Detroit to San Diego Part 2

August 21, 2014

The 2nd episode of Tyler Fernengel’s cross country “Detroit to San Diego” series from Red Bull takes him to a few parks in Chicago and Denver! Hit that play button and see what went down!

“The time has come — 18-year-old Tyler Fernengel is barreling into what will surely be an amazing pro BMX career (considering the amazing things he’s already done on his bike), and he’s made the decision to move west in favor of endless sunny days and amazing riding spots. In the second installment of his coming-of-age roadtrip above (watch part one here), Tyler says goodbye to family and friends in Michigan, packs up the moving truck, and hits the road.

“Everybody’s supportive of Tyler moving,” says his mom Michelle. “We’re all going to miss him, but everybody understands that [California] is where he needs to be.”

After putting some road miles in, Tyler stops in Chicago to stretch his legs, meet up with Brian Kachinsky and film a few clips at a local park, then it’s off to Denver. After sessioning a couple of amazing parks there, it’s back in the truck for the next leg, with Salt Lake City on the horizon.” – Red Bull

Red Bull – Tyler Fernengel: Detroit to San Diego – Part 1

August 18, 2014

A few weeks back, Tyler Fernengel made the cross country move from Detroit to San Diego with the help of Christian Rigal. They documented the whole trip from pre-move all the way through to his new home that will be appearing in this new series from Red Bull. Check out part one above where we get a little look into life where he grew up!

“Tyler Fernengel may have grown up in a small town in Michigan, but in recent years, his name has become known in BMX circles all over the world. With a combination of style and fearlessness and the ability to stomp some of the hardest tricks in the game on a consistent basis, he’s risen steadily into the pro ranks of BMX riding.

He turned 18 earlier this year and made the decision to leave his family, friends and formative riding spots in order to make the cross-country move to San Diego, California. With his sponsors and much of the BMX media in Southern California — not to mention the draw of year-round riding weather — the move was a bit of a no-brainer, but that didn’t mean it was going to be easy.

Tyler is close to his family and loyal to his Michigan roots, but his family and friends know that California is the place he needs to be, at least for now. We followed Tyler on his coming-of-age roadtrip, and you can see how it all went down in our three-part video series.

Watch part one above as he shows us around his hometown and takes his final sessions as a Wyandotte, Michigan, resident. Stay tuned for part two on Wednesday, August 20.”
