X-Games ATX Loves BMX
Here’s some awesome news. It turns out this summers X-Games in Austin, Texas will feature A LOT of BMX… Big Air, Park, Street, Vert and… wait for it… DIRT. Check out the press release below, then Click HERE to see the full line up of events! I actually want to go to this now.
“ESPN will present the inaugural X Games Austin June 5-8, 2014, at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. This year’s event will host more than 200 athletes at COTA and in downtown Austin. Action sports fans visiting COTA will enjoy many staple X Games disciplines at two different locations along the track’s 3.4 miles, including the newly added discipline of Stadium SUPER Trucks and the homecoming of BMX Dirt to U.S. soil after making its return last year at X Games Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil.
Building on last year’s debut of the X Games Music Presents series, X Games Austin will also showcase a world-class music lineup to complement the world’s premier action sports competition, including internationally acclaimed and Grammy Award-winning artist Kanye West, Flaming Lips and Pretty Lights.
Utilizing the large footprint of the COTA venue, the X Games on-site experience will grow significantly in 2014, bringing fans a full festival atmosphere surrounding the sports competition, complete with live music, athlete autograph sessions, pit access, Austin’s world-renowned food and drinks, interactive villages for fans of all ages and more – all included with the purchase of a ticket.
“X Games Austin 2014, will be a four day sports, music and lifestyle festival,” said Scott Guglielmino, sr. vice president, programming and X Games, ESPN. “The best athletes, competing at the highest levels remain the core of X Games. But we’re incredibly excited about being able to create a full-scale festival around that, which celebrates some of the other elements of the X Games lifestyle – music, friends, family, food and fun.”
“We look forward to hosting the X Games this June and introducing tens of thousands of brand new customers to the world-class venues we have at Circuit of The Americas,” said Paul Thornton, president of TAG Presents LLC, the events Management company for COTA and the Austin360 Amphitheater. “Austin is an ideal location for this international event as this city represents the bold and independent mindset embodied by the X Games. We’re ready to give action sports fans a Texas-sized festival experience with sports, music, rides and activities above and beyond what has ever been attempted before.””
REMEMBERING X – ROBBIE MORALES
Everyone knows Robbie Morales as the owner of Cult, but some of you younger kids may not know just how deep his roots are in BMX as a rider. Check this piece out to get a little bit of a better understanding.
X-Games Set To Return To 2 Events A Year
After a huge expansion in 2013, adding locations like Brazil, Spain and Germany to their locations, X-Games have announced that they will be scaling back in 2014 and returning to their 2 stop format; one in Austin, Texas for the summer and the other in Aspen, Colorado for the winter. This is some what surprising news, but based on the economics and logistics of making the global X-Games work, it’s not shocking. You can read all about why they have made the decision to scale back Right Here. Maybe they should have brought dirt back sooner and this wouldn’t have happened…

Brian Kachinsky shares some really cool memories from being in the X-Games, including the time his mother got Mat Hoffman’s phone number.

It’s crazy to think the X-Games and the Red Bull Phenom contest went down a month ago already… Here’s a rad video Red Bull dropped giving you a look at some of the highlights from the top 3 during the event. I’d imagine this will be an annual thing based on how well the contest went!
“After searching through 105 submitted videos from 24 different countries, the six most talented riders were chosen to show their skills on the official X-Games parcour in Los Angeles to find out who would be the Red Bull Phenom 2013.
The riders that made it on the podium were:
