There’s no denying that the freecoaster revolution has taken place and that it has become a focus product for many brands throughout the BMX industry. In the past two years we have seen a huge influx in the number of freecoaster hubs available and because of that we have seen improvements in the overall quality of the hubs.
Personally, I’ve never ran a freecoaster in my 15 years of riding and I guess up until fairly recently I shyed away from the idea because of the horror stories I’ve heard over the years from maintenance and the expense of replacing things like bearings. Once more brands started releasing their own take on the freecoaster hub and a huge flood of videos from pretty much all of the top street riders making riding with a freecoaster look pretty amazing, my interest was peaked and I finally caved and decided to see what all of the hype was about. About two months ago, I got my hands on one of The Shadow Conspiracy‘s Raptor freecoaster wheel and started seeing how things worked going backwards. After countless sessions, a lot of frustration and excitement, I decided it was time to do a little review. Let’s do this…
Insight: Cult – 2015 Frames
It’s that time of the year when companies start releasing their 2015 product lines that are filled with new and improved designs, new colors or just brand new products all together! The crew over at Cult have been busy getting their new range dialed in and it looks like it’s finally out now. They just released their full 2015 range which features signature frames for Chase Hawk, Dakota Roche, Alex Kennedy and Chase DeHart along with the SOS team frame! We figured now was as good of time as ever to take a closer look, so let’s do this!
Insight: The Shadow Conspiracy – 2015 Penumbra Signature Seats
There’s no denying that BMX has an unlimited supply of creativity and originality coming from riders all around the world and that’s undoubtably one of the best things it has going for it. When it comes to actual BMX products, we see trends come and go and times where we’ll see a lot of creativity followed up a lot of clones trying to replicate the original ideas that worked. The Shadow Conspiracy have always tried to stick to the creative and original route whether it’s creating new products or improving on existing designs. Although the Penumbra seat has been apart of the the Shadow Conspiracy product line for a couple of years now, it’s still constantly changing and evolving with the creativity of their team and materials. With Shadow’s new 2015 signature series seats becoming available, we figured it would be a great time to take a closer look at what Simone Barraco, Scott Ditchburn, Albert Mercado, Ben Hucke and Drew Bezanson cooked up for their own spin on the seat this time around. Let’s take a look!
Review: “Holy Fit”
In this day and age, thanks to the advancement of technology we are constantly flooded with new videos from around the world all day, every day. The concept of a web video has a lot of different meanings and obviously a lot of quality differences between total shit and “why isn’t this on DVD?”… Every year, we see fewer and fewer DVD’s released due to many factors, most of which come down to money and the reach a video has as a hard copy versus being released online. Despite the cost effectiveness and the simplicity of releasing a video online, there is still a clear reason why DVD’s are being produced, and that’s because the quality is far beyond something that deserves being watched for a few days before it is quickly buried and forgotten in fast moving river of online content.
We have been hearing about Fit Bike Co.‘s 4th DVD release, “Holy Fit”, for quite a while now and we were excited for a lot of reasons about the video being released. Once we saw the final product, it was clear that this video wasn’t just another video project that costs had to be cut to make happen. Let’s talk about this for a little bit…
Insight: Etnies – Chase Hawk Signature Marana Shoes
There’s no denying the success that Chase Hawk has found in BMX over all of his years of style that he has graced us with. This year in particular seems to be one that has been more than amazing than previous years with some unexpected changes to his sponsor line up, taking home a gold medal at the X-Games, having a day named after him in Austin, Texas, having a new version of his signature frame from Cult released and even more recently, his own signature colorway on the Marana shoe from Etnies. There have been a lot of good things happening for him and it’s safe to say it’s every bit well deserved.
A few weeks back, we got our hands on a pair of those signature shoes we just mentioned and figured it would be more than a good time to take a more in-depth look at just what makes the shoe special and give some insight into what we have thought about them so far! So, here we have… Our latest Insight! Let’s do this!
Insight: The Daily Grind – Hub Guards
What do you do when you break a part that is supposed to be designed to take abuse? Well, I know most of us will just be pissed, bitch, moan and swear off ever running the product again. But then there is a guy like Jon “Gremlin” Betchtold who decided that if he can’t find something he’s satisfied with, he will just make what he wants himself. After breaking what I could imagine plenty of parts because of how much of a beast he is, The Daily Grind was founded with the goal of producing products that are going to hold up to the heavy abuse that comes from riding street like riders really do it these days. One of the first products that The Daily Grind have offered was their hub guards but, recently, the crew decided to put a two year warranty on them to show just how much faith they have in them. Take a look at the video promo video they just dropped giving you a look at just what kind of abuse they put their guards through to make sure they are good enough for you, along with a look at some scraps for their new “Hard Times” DVD that is in the works. After you watch that, let’s take a closer look at just what make these guards special after the jump…
Insight: The BACO Box Set
Over the years, there have been a lot of videos that have come out that got us excited, but only a few that you know are going to be legendary before it’s even done. When word that there was a documentary and a box set in the works for the legendary Baco series, we knew that it was going to be one of those videos that everyone needed to see and it was going to be on that legendary level.
Over the past year or so, Chris Rye, along with the help of a handful of others, took on the job of compiling over 25 years of footage that literally spans a group of peoples lives for a quarter of a century and jamming it all into one Blu-Ray Disc. Now, in short, that sounds a lot easier than it really was, but in actuality it required what I’d imagine to be a few thousand hours, a lot of patience and probably a few stiff drinks to dig through hundreds of hours of VHS footage, DV tapes and digital footage that was all converted and pieced together into this video. Some how, things all came together, much like most of the Baco videos, and today we have a box set that contains all 10 Baco videos, a full documentary and hours of bonus features…
Insight: Madera – Polished Colorway
BMX is an ever revolving door when it comes to colors. Over the years we’ve seen everything from every kind of black you could imagine to bright neon colors that could give you a seizure if you looked at it long enough. Colors go hand in hand with the creative aspect of BMX and it can even be a direct reflection of the type of rider that is on a bike. There’s no denying that we’ve seen a lot of unique colors and a handful of colors that will always remain a classic in BMX and it will continue that way forever.
For those of you who don’t know, Madera is a brand that was created as a more affordable option to the high quality that Profile Racing offers. Both brands are produced right here in the U.S.A down in Florida out of the same warehouse and both brands use the same high quality materials and craftsmanship in creating their products, but thanks to manufacturing techniques Madera can be offered at a more affordable price point thanks to cutting costs through production time or aesthetic touches without sacrificing any of the quality.
Over the years, we’ve only seen a few colors from Madera; classic gloss black, Fall red, Snow white, nickel, a crazy graffiti wrap and their recent “Rust” copper addition. Needless to say they aren’t changing things up all the time to meet the latest trends like oil slick. However, today, were stoked to give you the first look at their newest addition to their color line up, polished, that is now offered on their hubs and Mast top load stems. The polished colorway has been a classic in BMX since the start and it’s one color that always looks good. We are stoked on the news about the color and thought it would be rad to take a closer look at how they get the hubs and stems to shine down in Florida. Make the jump and find out how it’s done and learn how you can WIN a Polished Mast stem for yourself!
