Undercover BMX Lover Contest Write Up

November 23, 2007

The 5th annual Undercover BMX Lover Contest went down this past Sunday. Undercover Skate Park has been kept in business for about 7 years now by the infamous BACO pioneer/general mad man Mark Hilson. Mark is known for crazy stories and knowing the most random people. It was no surprise that there were 3 Hooters girls at the contest announcing with Micah Kranz and handing out the prizes. Not to mention grinding each other and playing with a 3ft dildo that Casey Strong brought along… Anyways…

The contest went off super smooth and everyone was shredding all day long, ill try to keep this short to just highlight some things since you will be able to catch footage of the contest in an upcoming issue of PROPS. Some of the crazy lines came from locals Tommy Kerrigan who wall rode the back wall that sits a good 10 ft behind the quarter, local Rob Warning pedal 270ing a 9 ft high sub wall, Joey Augustine tailwhip a 10ft quarter to quarter gap, and Robert King with some super fast flowing lines.

Mykel Larin was going off like usual, he snapped a crank arm flipping the spine, and kept on trying to front flip the box only to hit his tire of the rafters sending him straight to his back. Koji Kraft was also there and shredding with whips to nose picks and other craziness. Federal flow rider Josh Eilken was also there doing some super original freecoaster/brakeless lines, be sure to keep an eye on this dude. Lots of other good stuff went down; I can’t give it all away! Keep an eye on deadendarmy.com in the next couple days for some photos! Also be sure to check the PROPS issue that it will be in! Thanks again to Mark Hilson for putting this on, Undercover lives to see another day! And thank’s Kurt for letting me type this up! Sorry about my spelling and grammar!

Go shred! Brian Hinckley/Dead End Army

BMX Short Interview with Nick Summerlot

November 22, 2007

I don’t think you know who this kid is, I don’t. However I think he needs to be heard of, why your asking? Well because the damn kid does 1080s out of a quarter! If you saw the video on The Come Up the other day you would know what I am talking about, incase you missed the video, it is at the bottom of this.

Name:
Nick Summerlot

Age:
17

Location:
Greencastle Indiana

Any sponsors at all?
Nope

Where did you learn to spin so fast!?
I don’t know, I guess it sorta came natural.

When did you realize you could get the 1080?
Two days ago. I was messing around with 720’s, and decided to try a 900. I somehow ended up getting a 900 like first or second try. When I told my friends this they told me I should try 1080, of course I thought they were crazy, but the next day at school thats all I could think about, so when I went to the park I started trying them, and I guess it worked out

How many have you pulled?
Three or Four, but none very clean (in my opinion) I plan on trying a lot more, and hope to get them dialed, and next time I go to the “Flow” doing one on a Box

How long have you been riding?
Four or Five Years

Outside of the 1080 what other tricks do you got on lock?
Tables, turndowns, hang-nothings, tuck no-handers, I love handrails, 180’s over boxes, and going really high…if thats a trick

Who are some of your biggest influences?
Justin Inman, Mike Aitken, Chris Doyle, Luke Becker, Kyle Mullen,

Any shout outs or thanks?
My mom, Luke Becker, Clark Becker, Kyle Mullen, Brownsburg kids, Josh, Salsa, pretty much everybody I ride with

A pretty typical day at the park from Luke Becker on Vimeo.

The clip of the 1080 is at about 1:19 so get pumped by 1:15..

Jimmy Levan Update!

November 21, 2007

Bdubs aka. Ben Ward posted this up on myspace, so I am forwarding it to you dudes

A very close friend of mine and a Legend in the BMX Community, Jimmy Levan has suffered a serious head injury in a skateboarding accident.

“His insurance will not cover the rehabilitation he needs and a fund has been set up to help him. Jimmy is doing a lot better but is very confused and cannot recall alot of the last year. He is going to need to go to a rehabilitation centre for serious brain injuries, I was talking with his mom today and we are going to see if we can get him into a centre in jfk edison under some sort of charity or low earning fund, but this will cost $70.000. $40,000 before and the rest after.”

Empire BMX is going to match any donation given to the Help Jimmy Fund, so even if its $10 dollars it will all make a difference.

Donation info: www.empirebmx.com

For those of you who dont know him, heres some info.
