If you’re a product nerd, it has been an exciting time when it comes to hubs. As of late, we got a look at the long awaited Flybikes Magneto Cassette Hub and the new Eclat Seismic Hub that are making some big changes to the way cassette hubs work, now it looks like the Freenight Planetary Coaster Hub that has been in the works for quite some time now is available. This one is unique because it’s basically a freecoaster and a cassette hub in one utilizing a system that’s been used before, but modified to make it work much better. Here is a short video Night Rider BMX Shop put together giving you a look at the driver internals and just how it all works. After you check out the video, you can learn more about the hub over on the Freenight Website where they have photos, specs and details on the hub for you to get a look at.
“The long awaited Planetary Coaster internal parts.
This new and innovative hub allows you to enjoy a Cassette feeling while riding forward, and Freecoaster slack moving backwards.
Hi, and welcome to the inside of the freenight hub.
The freenight hub is a planetary coaster. To understand what it means, I’ll start by explaining the basic idea.
Let’s begin with the driver. Each pawl is kept down by a spring, and the driver engages when the pawls are lifted by a clutch disc. If you know your history, you might have seen this before. That idea was very nice and simple, but it had one major trouble – there was no control over the clutch disc.
This is where the planetary clutch comes to work.On the side that faces the driver, there is a clutch disc with ramps for each pawl. When moving forward, the ramps are always close to the pawls, so we get immediate engagement. Moving backwards, the ramps are always far away from the pawls, so it prevents unwanted engagement. In other words – moving forward you have minimal slack, and moving backwards you have maximum slack, it’s that simple.
There will be more videos explaining the inside of the clutch itself, and also tutorials for hub assembly, all coming soon.

Flybikes have FINALLY released a look inside their long awaited, highly anticipated Magneto Cassette Hub that has been in the works for a little over a decade. The internals are surprisingly pretty simple, but there was A LOT that went into getting everything just right. The team has been testing different versions since rumors about it first started swirling around 2008 / 2009ish and they’ve tested out a bunch of different manufacturers in the process. It looks like they’ve finally got it all dialed in and found the perfect manufacturer in Europe to make it a reality. Essentially the hub utilizes two magnets, one on the driver and one on the ratchet, that push the ratchet ring into place with magnetic force when you pedal. There are fewer parts, simplifying things and making for one clean looking hub. The exact release date “During these past 10+ years, some people have seen it or heard about it, but now we are finally letting everyone see how the Magneto cassette works. ** Update starts here… ** “The Magneto Cassette hub features a magnetic system engage using the force of two magnets that allows the ratchet ring to engage. The magnetic field provides an even repelling force which makes the ratchet work completely straight and are created in a way that reduces friction compared to the use of springs. The Neomidium magnets we use maintain the magnetic field pretty much forever as well. These properties create the fastest, most reliable and durable system possible. Not to mention, a pretty unique and powerful noise that everybody loves… We also have a matching Magneto Front Hub and Hub guards that will be dropping with the Magneto Cassette in October! We are taking pre-orders from shops and distributors now!” – Flybikes Here’s a look at the front hub… Also, here’s a post about it — Sneak Peek: Flybikes – Magneto Front Hub Whenever GSport drops a new hub, you know it’s going to be high quality. What a journey it has been to make this happen… We had a dream a long time ago about a system with just one ratchet and magnets instead of springs. This simple idea sounded easy to make happen, but it definitely wasn’t!
We wanted this hub to be as good as it gets, so after countless samples to achieve our dream hub, finally, we choose to have them made in Europe to get the finest quality possible with different axles, bolts, drivers & color options. We are beyond stoked to finally put it into production.
The Magneto Cassette Hub will be available this summer. We will be announcing the release date and full details on the hub options soon! The wait is almost over!” – Flybikes
The simplicity of the system is also great for customization. With ONLY ONE moving part, the assembly is as easy as it can get and reduces the overall weight significantly.
We are using heat treated CrMo caps instead of aluminum to be stiff and avoid wobble that can form over time and they are CNC machined outside and inside to achieve almost the same weight as aluminum. The shell is made of a much stronger 7075 Aluminum and features the sunken spoke holes that we created with our Classic Front Hub. The driver, end caps and bolts use an anti-rust process that also gives the hub an awesome titanium color finish.GSport – Roloway Cassette Hub
