The Art of the BMX Sprocket

March 4, 2016

federal-bikes-bbs-sprocket

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these “The Art Of” pieces, so we figured it would be a good time to take a closer look at one part in particular that we’ve been thinking about lately, the BMX Sprocket. The other day we were bouncing around to a few different brands websites to see if there were any new products or anything else new to see, and we ended up staring at the sprockets. When you think about it, the sprocket is one of those things that can really be altered the most as far as aesthetics go. We’ve seen A LOT of sprockets in BMX’s history, so we decided to stick to sprockets that are currently available. Even with cutting it back to that, there’s still a ton of options available. Add in the different combos between the standard bolt drive, Spline drive, and socket drive, colors, versions with guards, etc. There’s a lot to take in. We bounced around and picked out some of our favorites from a number of brands, which you can check out below with a few words about each! Ready?

How BMX Frame Stays Are Bent

February 17, 2016

A video posted by Chris Moeller (@moeller_chris) on Feb 16, 2016 at 1:53pm PST

Two in a row from Chris Moeller this morning! Here we have a look at the seat stay tubing being bent for the Brian Foster frame from Fit Bike Co. at the S&M Bikes warehouse out in California. Another one of those not so crazy videos, but still interesting to see. You would think it would be a fancier machine, but it looks to be pretty much man power, a little machine power and leverage to make it happen. It’s also interesting since this is just one small part of the frame building process. We’re loving these behind the scenes production clips!

How BMX Handlebar Tubing Is Cut

February 17, 2016

A video posted by Chris Moeller (@moeller_chris) on Feb 15, 2016 at 2:43pm PST

Chris Moeller continuing his production footage from inside the S&M Bikes warehouse in California. Although this might not seem like the most exciting process, it’s definitely interesting to see the machine they use to repetitively cut the tubing for the handlebars they make. This machine is cutting tubing for the Charlie Crumlish bars specifically. After this, it’s sent to the tube bender to get the right shape, welded up then passed along to the paint crew. Another fun fact? The last 20″ of the stock they use is too short, so they have to let that go. Any guesses where that tubing goes? Most likely recycled, but you never know, right? How A BMX Stem Is CNC Machined

January 17, 2016

A video posted by Chris Moeller (@moeller_chris) on Jan 15, 2016 at 8:29am PST

Chris Moeller has been killing it with the behind the scenes production clips the past few days. So far we got a look at how knurling is added to handlebars, then we got a look at how they bend the tubing for a BMX fork and now today we get a look at how S&M Bikes CNC machine a BMX stem. It turns out this is a little sneak preview of a new updated topload stem they’re working on, that we would imagine will be out soon. Based on the clip, our guess is that it’s the Enduro or Credence stem, but we could be wrong!

“Sneak peek of a new and improved top load stem. We’re doing a 40mm, 49mm and 52mm version. Take a wild guess what it is.”

How a BMX Fork Leg Is Made

January 14, 2016

A video posted by Chris Moeller (@moeller_chris) on Jan 14, 2016 at 2:43pm PST

It would appear that Chris Moeller caught everyones requests to see more of how BMX products are made. The other day he posted up a clip of how knurling is added to handlebars, now today we get a look at how they bend the tubing for an S&M Bikes or Fit Bike Co. fork. It seems pretty simple, but it’s still pretty interesting to see since we don’t always get to see the production side of BMX. We want MORE!!!

“Forkin’ A! @sandmbmx and @fitbikeco legs are made one at a time. This one by @jasonball75” – Chris Moeller

How Knurling On Bars Is Done

January 13, 2016

A video posted by Chris Moeller (@moeller_chris) on Jan 12, 2016 at 1:02pm PST

Have you ever wondered how knurling on the bars or really any other part on your bike that might utilize this technique to keep your shit from slipping? Well, Chris Moeller posted this quick video clip of them getting the process done on a set of S&M Bikes or Fit Bike Co. bars in their warehouse in California. If you’re a product nerd like us, this stuff is awesome to see.

“Totally knurly bro! One of the most difficult parts of making the best handlebars in BMX! So many little tricks in equipment, tools, cutting fluid and materials to get this seemingly simple diamond knurl right. We’ve been at it non-stop since 1999 and I think it shows.” – Chris Moeller
