Space Brothers Podcast – Steve Crandall

February 20, 2019

The latest round of the Space Brothers Podcast has arrived! This time around Steve Crandall sits down to talk about FBM, riding bikes, traveling, announcing contests, his friendship with Mike Tag, artwork and much, much more! Steve is always doing something cool and has a ton of great stories and experiences to share. This is well worth a listen!

“Back in January of 1994 I had just flunked out of college and I felt like a complete failure, but I didn’t want to return home just yet. I knew of a house with bmx riders that had just come together a couple of months previous and they were looking to take over the upstairs apt but needed a few tenants. So I moved from school directly into what became known as the Fat House.

The original cast was an eclectic group of riders, mostly dirt jumpers and street riders which originally included Jody Donnelly, Mike Tag, Jeremy Reiss, Crazy Joe Daugirda, and last but not least, Steve Crandall. Crandall and the boys had just moved from Ithaca NY to move into a local skatepark that ended up going under before it got off the ground. They decided to stick it out and see what the Hoosier land could provide.

Over the next couple of years Steve became more focused as a rider and a company owner, while creating some of his early videos which would become instant classics. At the time FBM was just a clothing company with a few t-shirt designs, in which Steve made every one of them by hand on a printing press located on the back porch of our house. The FBM brand continued to grow in recognition as the crew traveled to events including NBL nationals, Hoffman BS comps, local trail jams, and even the first X Games. Some of the guys Steve sponsored were starting to receive notoriety including Mike Tag, which helped the name grow even more quickly. Not only that but some of the best dirt jumps in the entire country ended up being built by Steve, Jeremy, and Mike bringing people from all over the US to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Seemingly overnight the FBM name was everywhere and the Fat House became a bmx tourist destination.

We sat down at the Master Blaster Planet studios with Steve and talked about early life and growing up in Ithaca NY, getting on the public access channel, moving to Fort Wayne IN and into the Fat House, videos he released, turning FBM into a bike company, creating popular DIY events like the Ghetto Jam, announcing major bmx comps around the world, his relationship with Mike Tag, current projects with FBM, and creating a new book with Matt Coplon.

So get comfortable, crank up your speakers, and get to know one of the most popular bmx riders on and off the bike…. Steve Crandall!”

Drinking Black Coffee – The Art of Steve Crandall

July 20, 2018

Steve Crandall gives us some insight into how art keeps him moving…

Here’s a rad video that gives us some insight into how Steve Crandall looks at art and how it keeps him motivated in everything he does from building trails, painting, doing projects for FBM and more. Steve has a great perspective on things and it’s a good reminder that you need to do what makes you happy. Take a look!

“A person’s motivation reveals a lot about them. and I wanted to find out more about what motivates the one and only Steve Crandall beyond what we know of him with FBM.

Always creating and enjoying things with the community that he surrounds himself with, Crandall’s intentions through life are pure, and his actions reflect that. He holds BMX values as a foundation and that spreads into every aspect of his life. Whether he’s coasting a big bike down a hill, digging in the dirt, or painting a coffee cup, it all comes from the same place and for the same reasons.

This short film was shot in early April 2018 and documents Crandall in Richmond VA dealing with his first ever solo art show, and his preparation for the show 6 hours north in his hometown of Ithaca NY. – Kenny Horton

The Halahan Brothers “Under Your Influence” – Steve Crandall

March 16, 2018

The Second episode of “Under Your Influence” with the Halahan brothers takes a look at weekend with Steve Crandall…

If you caught the first “Under Your Influence” video with , then you know by now that the Halahan Brothers have some very good influences. This second episode, Lukas, Nathan and Shane spend a weekend out cruising with Steve Crandall who is not only their sponsor with FBM, but a close family friend. It’s easy to tell where these guys have got their positive and rad attitudes. Take a look at what they got into!

“The Halahan Bro’s : Under Your Influence

The Halahan Brothers. Lukas (15), Nathan (13), and Shane (8) got every kid’s dream opportunity – to ride with their favorite pros. Only these pros weren’t the ones you’d expect. When asked who they’d be most stoked to ride with, first up came the name Garrett Byrnes, followed closely by this guy, Mr FBM – Steve Crandall; both of whom are older than the age of the three boys combined.

Episode Two: Steve Crandall.

High fives and good times in Richmond, VA. Squeezing as much fun in to twenty-four hours was the mission. Two DIY concrete spots and Steve’s own trail’s made it easy. Spray painting t-shirts, BBQ, and fire at the FBM bus properly brought the day to a close.

The Halahan Bro’s are proudly supported by DIG partners Profile Racing and Vans.

In The Cut – 2017 Uncovered BMX Series: Stop 1

January 23, 2018

Check out this raw cut from the first Uncovered BMX Series stop…

When Van Homan and Brian Kachinsky throw an event, you know it’s going to be a good time. Here’s a look at what went down during the first stop of the Uncovered BMX Series at the Mason Dixon Skatepark. This contest is for the AM’s and it’s safe to say most of these guys you might not have ever seen footage of, but they all threw down. It looks like this was a good time to us!

“The inaugural stop of Van Homan and Brian Kachinsky’s Uncovered contest series at Mason Dixon Skatepark kicked off in a big way. People were hitting rafters repeatedly, wallriding the top of garage doors, and getting fed pizza by judges mid-run. After nearly burning down the whole place with his non-stop fuego in the finals, Pennsylvania’s Mad Mike Guth took home a well-deserved first place.
