Ryan Nyquist Returns To The Unit

January 10, 2018

Ryan Nyquist and his family moved back to North Carolina! Check out Ryan throwing down at his private park, The Unit!

A few years ago Ryan Nyquist moved with his family back to his original hometown in San Jose, California. Last year they decided it was time to head back to North Carolina where Ryan spent most of his professional years as a rider, helping to make Greenville known as “Pro Town”. Although he’s living in Wilmington two hours from Greenville, he’s a hell of a lot closer than being in California. That means he has been able to get plenty of riding time in at his private park, The Unit, once again! Here’s a video with a bunch of dialed riding that Ryan threw down during a recent session! You already know Ryan brought his deep bag of tricks and put the endless lines of the place to good use!

“Ryan Nyquist recently re-relocated to his adopted home of North Carolina, which also happens to be home to his private skatepark – The Unit. Watch as Ryan rides the place like only the man with the keys can. Timeless!” – Vital BMX

The Scotty Cranmer Interview

December 31, 2017

Scotty Cranmer sits down for a full interview that covers A LOT of ground…

We get a look into Scotty Cranmer‘s life pretty much every single day, but most of the time it’s about him and his friends having fun, versus actual details into Scotty’s whole life. Vital BMX‘s Kyle Carlson sat down with Scotty to talk about a bunch of things from his injury recovery to riding, Youtube, the Incline Club closing and much, much more. This is really cool since you get to learn a little bit more about Scotty that you don’t always get to hear about when he’s putting out a video. We’ve been blown away by how much Scotty has done this past year in his recovery and how he is constantly producing great content and more.

“Scotty Cranmer – the 2017 Vital BMX Rider of the Year – opens up about his injury, recovery, skatepark closing, YouTube channel, and future.” – Vital BMX

6 Year Old Sebastian Angulo Shreds

December 24, 2017

It’s crazy how good the kids are getting at riding BMX these days!

I’m not sure exactly what I was doing at 6 years old, but I can tell you I wasn’t already shredding a skatepark like a champ at that age! With the way BMX bikes are being built and designed for younger riders, it’s pretty amazing to see how well these kids are picking tricks up. Sebastian Angulo might only be six years old, but that doesn’t seem to matter since he’s already roasting hips, sending icepick grinds, manualing boxes and more! Take a peek at this short but sweet edit… We have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of Sebastian in the future!

“6-year-old Sebastian Angulo is an absolute shredder. This kid is from Venezuela and progressing like crazy. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!

Big thanks to Diego Angulo, Sebastian’s dad, for this video and for keeping his son rolling!” – Vital BMX

December 17, 2017

We finally get a look at how BMX fits into the Cirque du Soleil!

Over the course of the past few years we have heard rumblings about BMX being added into the Cirque du Soleil, but we had only seen footage from practices and tests. Now we get a look at what the final shows are looking like, along with some insight from a few familiar faces that are in the shows!

“Cirque du Soleil’s newest production – Volta – has officially landed in the United States. And, if you didn’t already know, it features BMX riding. How weird could it be? We joined Daniel Dhers at the premiere to see what it’s all about!” – Vital BMX

Team USA Freestyle BMX Team Announced

December 14, 2017

The Team USA Freestyle BMX team has been announced…

If you were wondering who would be the first riders to represent team USA in the Olympics for Freestyle BMX… You now have your answer. Vital BMX just dropped a video and a whole bunch of information about who was selected for Team USA and what that means for these guys. After you check out the video, you can find out more on Vital BMX

“The United States of America officially has a freestyle BMX team.

Yesterday in Colorado Springs at The Olympic Training Center, USA Cycling named the following riders as members of their national team –

Nick Bruce
Colton Walker
Daniel Sandoval
Pat Casey
Justin Dowell
Hannah Roberts
Angie Marino
Cory Coffey

Along with naming the team, the athletes (and I, for some reason) got to explore the amenities The Olympic Training Center had to offer. From nutritionists to psychologists to masseuses – and much, much more – the riders have access to countless tools to maximize their abilities.

Is it weird? Yeah. Well, I take that back. No. It’s just new. New to us, that is. US Olympians have been using these tools for many years and have a whole lot of medals to show for it. With freestyle BMX officially becoming an Olympic sport, it only makes sense that – if they so choose – these riders will have access to all of the same things.

In addition to access to The Olympic Training Center, USA Cycling is also supporting the athletes financially. Pending their placings throughout the year, the athletes will land in one of three tiers. The top-tier athletes will receive benefits like fully-covered travel and even paychecks (a little over $2,000-per-month). All of the riders can receive monetary bonuses with good performances at major events.

To put it lightly, all of the riders were stoked at the opportunity to receive more much-needed support.

While this sounds great – and it is – the USA Cycling National Team is reevaluated quarterly. If a rider continues delivering favorable results, they have potential to grow with the team. If their results are less than stellar, they may fall to a lower tier of benefits or even be removed from the team entirely. There’s a good chance that the team in December of 2018 will look drastically different than this recently-announced team. Also, on the flip side, if riders not currently included from The United States are able to make a big impact, they can earn their way onto the team throughout the year. Competition is brutal!

While freestyle is young at USA Cycling and the majority of the people within the office walls are just starting to get familiar with it, I found my experience there enjoyable and promising. They don’t know much and they know they don’t know much. They’re open and they listen. That’s huge. If these guys came in thinking they knew how to run things, the entire US program would surely suffer. The higher-ups admit it’s a work in progress and, as time moves forward, I think we’ll be seeing more positive things coming from the crew.

Also, before you ask, I did discuss a freestyle training facility with USA Cycling. There aren’t currently any solid plans in place, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw something before The Olympics in 2020.

The future is bright. Thanks to USA Cycling for having me out and congratulations to all of the riders on taking their next formal steps in this new direction.” – Vital BMX

Linda Vista Skatepark Sessions

December 9, 2017

Just when you think San Diego couldn’t possibly get any better… The city opens up the new Linda Vista skatepark!

Check out this rad video featuring Alex Leibrock, Parker Heath and Danny Josa putting the brand new and very dialed looking Linda Vista Skatepark in San Diego to good use! This one will make you a little jealous if you aren’t near San Diego.

“As if you needed another reason to start planning a trip out west, right? San Diego’s biggest skatepark – the new Linda Vista Skatepark – isn’t formally open yet, but the sessions have already been poppin’. Expect a formal opening sometime in January and, until then, watch Parker Heath and Alex Leibrock put a beating on the place!” – Vital BMX
