Why Do People Hate Action Sports?

January 19, 2017

Dan Foley has been doing a lot of interesting things over on his Youtube channel with a steady flow of riding videos lately. Dan has also taken some time to do a few pieces that will get you thinking as well. This time around Dan gives his perspective on Why People Hate Action Sports, using the recent dispute the Nitro Circus ran into in Maryland when they wanted to take a show back to where Travis Pastrana grew up. On top of that, Dan gives a TON of really great examples of just why action sports are really beneficial and not what most outsiders might see. Dan is a perfect example of a person who rides BMX, but because of that he has also become a super talented film maker, had the opportunity to travel the world, experience a lot of things many people wouldn’t have the chance and more!

One thing to consider, from our perspective, is that “Action Sports” are still young sports in comparison to other well established sports like Baseball, Football, Soccer and more that are more mainstream and easier for people to understand. But slowly, we’ve seen it become more and more understood and have fewer negative connotations that it used to come with. Just referring to it as “Action Sports” sounds more professional than “Extreme Sports”, and that’s a small thing that can have a bigger impact on the visualization of just what it is we do than most might think.

Unfortunately, we do still have a long way to go with these sports and it’s hard to get away from some of the images that have been created like “stoners” and criminals that only destroy property and more. It’s hard for people to see it in a professional light from the outside when it’s painted as a criminal activity, but there has been a lot of changes that have taken place to make it more “acceptable”, like a huge influx of the number of public skateparks. Understandably, a lot of riders don’t want BMX to be acceptable because they’re against the mainstream style of sports, but it’s not like that. Having action sports given a better reputation only helps us grow this sport of ours beyond this niche, making it so more people can ultimately turn riding BMX into a career or just seeing many more riders pick up bikes or whatever it is they might be into.

Either way, we’re bound to see BMX and Action Sports in general keep growing and with that, it will become more acceptable and that will only help make things better for riders. That’s our two cents.

“A Day Later” – Steven Hamilton and the Unseen Intro to a Sequel That Never Was

January 19, 2017

Here’s a gem for all of you Mid School guys out there. Here’s footage that was supposed to go toward the sequel of the “A Day Late and A Dollar short” video that ultimately never made it into a DVD and, thankfully, found its way online many years after the project had lost its traction. The back story is a bit of a bummer, but the silver lining is that there is still some really good footage that did end up seeing the light of the day! Check out what Steven Hamilton and the rest of the crew cooked up!

“It was fifteen years ago when Andy Marshall’s ‘A Day Late and a Dollar Short’ introduced some new progressive Central Ohio street riders to the world of BMX.

For some, the video marked the end. A scene and a crew, a time period captured in a video. For others, the video marked the beginning. And for others, it was somewhere in-between.

This footage was kind of when we all started going our separate ways. Looking back, it’s cool to see all of our riding really maturing
during this period. You can see that higher level of confidence here.

In a way, it’s a shame this video never happened. What if the trips had never ended, and we all kept riding together?

But life gets in the way sometimes. Though a lot of this footage ended up in other places, it’s nice to see it together and wonder, what if?” – Steven Hamilton

Cody Thomas – Hood Antics TM

January 19, 2017

The Hood Antics crew dropped this new video featuring Cody Thomas absolutely slaughtering rails around the Midwest! If you like to watch a video where the rider absolutely sends it, this is definitely the BMX video for you to watch! Cody has been a recognizable name in the Midwest for years and the dude keeps on laying it down every chance he gets. Hell yeah, Cody!

“I’ll never forget the day I met Cody. I was 18 and had just moved to Columbus for school. I was out pedaling alone looking for spots and other kids on bikes. I found a group and awkwardly forced myself into riding with them. Then Cody rolled up. He came right up to me, asked if I was new, demanded my number, told me he’d be picking me up to ride the flow on the reg, and then made fun of me for being too street, style daddy, and salty cleveland mane. He took me in as a brother without a second thought.
I wouldn’t be who I am today without Cody. He taught me that it’s ok to show your friends love. He taught me that I had no fucking idea what intelligence was. He taught me I didn’t have to go it alone, and time spent in the company of friends is never a waste, regardless of the activity. Also, footjams.
This edit is a testament to his love for bmx and his friends. He rides hard as fuck because BMX deserves it and that’s it. Watching it come together over the last year has been mind-altering. Everyone talks about putting everything they’ve got into one cohesive project, but few ever do. He did it in between working 3-4 jobs, without a filmer, and without a steady crew of riders. Not to mention, he almost lost his arm to shingles and his appendix self detonated. Kid, one of Cody’s closest filming resources (2 hours away) shot the thumbnail on a pretty average day for Cody. He worked his ass off all night, slept a wink, woke up and moved an entire house, all before sneaking a gap-to-rail into his day. Through all this, Cody still found the time to print a run of Yogi T-Shirts for the crew, because that’s Cody. We’ve all called him the TM since the beginning of antics. He’s trying to buy some scary van off craigslist and take his boys everywhere all in the name of a good time. He willed this entire piece into existence and monster trucked over all excuses in the process.
Cody is the embodiment of everything I love and hold dear about bmx. Cody, you are my brother, and I love you.
” – Rob DiQuattro
