February 24, 2019

It’s that time for another round of the Imprimatur BMX Podcast! This time around Mike Hinkens caught up with Chris Rye to talk about the film side of BMX. This covers a ton of ground from how Chris got into BMX, what got him hooked on making videos, doing the Props videos, the new Jimmy Levan documentary that is being released next month and much, much more! Chris is a super interesting guy and he’s done a TON of really cool things in BMX that helped shape where it is today. Hit play and take it all in!

“In this episode of the ImprimaturBMX podcast, Mike Hinkens talks with the co-founder and head editor of Props Visual, Chris Rye. They discuss big themes like the relationship between, and the purpose of video in BMX culture as well as the BACO videos all the way up to the fundraiser that spurred “one last issue of Props.” Additionally, they dive into the origins, purpose, influence, and ultimate demise of the Props Video Magazine. Finally, they discuss the production and release plans of the upcoming and highly anticipated Jimmy Levan documentary: “Go Fast, Pull Up.”” – Mike Hinkens

Paddy Gross – Four Pegs, Two Brakes, One Attitude

January 8, 2018

Paddy Gross coming through with a dialed new video filled with brakes and pegs!

Here’s a really rad one that surfaced online featuring Paddy Gross putting his brakes and pegs to good use from Portland to Germany and a few other places. This also features front brake magic from Adam Banton, Axel Reichertz, Brett Banasiewicz, Clint Millar, Rob Nolli, Dave Freimuth, Chad DeGroot, Nick Harkins, Chris Rye, Tobias Wicke and Rick Moliterno. If that doesn’t sound amazing, then you’re blowing it! This BMX video is packed with amazing ramp riding and a little flatland from start to finish!

“I agreed to this project when it was still a baby. Now a year later it has grown into quite a monster of a video. We have had the honor of collecting original clips from many highly influential and legendary riders from the mid school. Which has made this video such a joy to create. Its like stepping into a time machine and traveling back to the glory days of bmx. Again thank you everyone who had contributed this project. it has been a blast. Enjoy!” – Matt Miller

Review: Props – Issue 79

November 7, 2017

If you told me I’d be writing a review of an issue of Props on my 29th birthday a year ago… I would have told you that you were full of shit.

Props BMX Issue 79 Cover

It’s weird how much things change as time goes forward and technology evolves. When Props started they were on VHS, then came the era of DVD’s and then Blu-Ray. Once everything started to land online and the floodgates opened with affordable camera equipment and editing software you could run on your phone, it got crazy. Everyone became a filmer and editor and producing a BMX video didn’t take nearly as much effort. Unfortunately running a video magazine wasn’t quite as lucrative of a business anymore and Chris Rye made the decision to put the Props Video Magazine to rest while focusing on deeper projects like the up coming Jimmy Levan Documentary, the Baco Box Set and some how managing to cram ALL of the old Props videos into 5 Blu-Ray discs. It was a bummer, but it made complete sense, even if a lot of the older guys weren’t very happy about it.

Fortunately, things in BMX tend to go full circle and every now and then we get a reincarnation that kicks a lot of ass, even if the reason behind it isn’t the best of news. A little while back BMX legend Chris Hallman was diagnosed with Colon cancer and Chris Rye decided to get the band back together and do a one off, special edition issue of Props to raise some much needed funds for Hallman and his battle with cancer and the ridiculous medical bills that come along with that. Chris charged up the camera batteries and enlisted the help of filmers Darryl Tocco, Steve Crandall, Bob Scerbo, Jerrod Glasgow and Jeremie Inflelise to go to work filming different sections for the video.

Props BMX Issue 79

Even on a pretty short timeline, the guys were able to cook up some excellent sections with the support from a bunch of BMX brands that were able to chip in to help make this one a reality. The sections you can find in Props Issue 79 are…

– Bobbie Altiser Profile
– Day In The Life of Van Homan
– Steady Rollin’ with Cody Diggs
– Everyday We Do It (In Texas)
– FBM Lost Bowl Sessions
– Trey Jones’ FloriDeah
– Iowa Barn Fools
– Relic Road Trip
– Dan Coller Bio

The bonus section features the Taj Mihelich “Life After Pro” video that is some how even better on an actual TV.

Needless to say, the video brought together a ton of amazing riders, filmers and people in BMX that put in the work to produce another timeless Props issue that you’ll want to replay over and over again. If you have been missing that spark to motivate you to ride, this will do the trick. I wasn’t even through the first section and I wanted to grab my bike for a session and it was cold and snowing out. Having something like this come out on DVD was a much needed break from the Youtube and Vimeo videos that are constantly flowing across the computer and phone screens day in and day out. It was a good reminder that even as times change, sometimes going with a classic form will produce a better result than what might be easier. In this case, it was producing a DVD versus just releasing it online and hoping for enough likes, comments and shares to get it seen.

Now, this might not appeal to the younger generation of riders out there, but just know that proceeds are going toward a great cause and you get a piece of history in return for your generosity. Props Issue 79 is now available in the PROPS WEBSTORE for $19.99 (DVD) or $24.99 (Blu-Ray) and through BMX shops and mail-orders like Empire BMX worldwide. Full proceeds go toward Chris Hallman and his battle with Colon Cancer!

Big shout out to Chris Rye and everyone that had their hand in producing this video. It turned out even more amazing than expected and it was a good reminder that BMX kicks a lot of ass. Do yourself a favor and go order up a copy today!

Jimmy Levan – “Go Fast Pull Up” Trailer

November 1, 2017

Check out this new trailer for the Jimmy Levan documentary that’s getting close to completion!

There’s a chance you have heard about the Jimmy Levan documentary that Chris Rye has been working on for the past two years or so now. This story that takes a look back on Jimmy Levan’s life from being a Pro riders to dying and coming back to life a few times and much more is wrapping up and should be dropping in a few months, and it’s bound to be amazing. Here’s a trailer that was released in the new Props Issue 79 that was released last week! This is just a sample of one of the many gnarly stories that will be in this one. Get ready.

“It’s moments like these that make it all worthwhile. Jimmy Levan has been a hero for us at DIG and graced the pages of our magazine from the earliest of days, sending street riding in a whole other direction since Road Fools 1 with those enormous gaps in all sorts of wild outfits. Not only did he create a brand and home for the loosest of riders, and entertained us all through numerous episodes of Props with his antics, but he had an equally outrageous string of accidents that could have ended his life. A true one in a million kinda guy. ‘Go Fast Pull Up’, the story of Jimmy Levan, coming 2018 – a film by Chris Rye.” – DIG

Props BMX – Chad DeGroot Baco Throwback

June 22, 2016

Props dropped this short but sweet throwback to some of Chad DeGroots classics from the Baco days. This has some flatland, antics, lake jumping and laughs. Take a look!

“A few weeks ago Chad asked me to help put together a little mashup of him to feature for his Decobmx day on Instagram, which was today.

Had the idea for a “Greatest Hits” theme and designed a record label, then filmed it on the turntable for the intro. Nothing too crazy, just a 60 sec little thing made up of some classic Baco footage of Chad going back to the early to late-90s. Damn good times we all had.

The song was featured in the Baco 7 credits from 1996, thought it was a cool throwback.” – Chris Rye

Kevin Porter – “Salvation”

November 30, 2015

It’s a well known FACT that you cannot go wrong with some Kevin Porter footage! Especially when it’s footage like his section in the 2002 release “Salvation” which features some true “classic Kevin Porter riding” like crazy lines with crankflips in and out, spins galore and plenty of style. This is one BMX video we suggest you hit that play button on! Shout out to Snakebite BMX for uploading this gem!

Insight: The BACO Box Set

September 5, 2014

IMG_0073_600x

Over the years, there have been a lot of videos that have come out that got us excited, but only a few that you know are going to be legendary before it’s even done. When word that there was a documentary and a box set in the works for the legendary Baco series, we knew that it was going to be one of those videos that everyone needed to see and it was going to be on that legendary level.
Over the past year or so, Chris Rye, along with the help of a handful of others, took on the job of compiling over 25 years of footage that literally spans a group of peoples lives for a quarter of a century and jamming it all into one Blu-Ray Disc. Now, in short, that sounds a lot easier than it really was, but in actuality it required what I’d imagine to be a few thousand hours, a lot of patience and probably a few stiff drinks to dig through hundreds of hours of VHS footage, DV tapes and digital footage that was all converted and pieced together into this video. Some how, things all came together, much like most of the Baco videos, and today we have a box set that contains all 10 Baco videos, a full documentary and hours of bonus features…
