Everything You Need To Know About BMX – Part 1

March 6, 2019

Here’s an interesting video Red Bull just dropped called the ABC’s of BMX where they discuss everything you need to know about BMX. This features footage from the team, along with some behind the scenes footage from training and riding sessions. The video is narrated by Sebastian Keep, which definitely makes this better. In this first part, the video covers everything from injuries to the lifestyle and traveling. It’s pretty basic, but it’s clear this series is more geared toward people that don’t ride BMX to help explain it a bit. Either way, it’s an interesting watch, so take a look.

“The ultimate BMX breakdown – here is all you need-to-know! A BMX, or Bicycle Motocross, has a long and rich history of the most creative riders constantly taking the sport above and beyond. Get to know the ways this sport has continued to develop and fan out in new ways thanks to so many pioneers.” – Red Bull

Red Bull – Sand Castle Project

May 3, 2018

Kostya Andreev and Irek Rizaev throw down on a crazy sand castle ramp setup in this video from Red Bull!

We have seen some crazy setups to ride over the years from Red Bull and they never fail to completely blow our minds on what is possible. The other week we got the Mirror Park video, now today we get a video featuring Kostya Andreev and Irek Rizaev throwing down on a frozen SAND CASTLE! Well, we’re not 100% sure what this thing is actually made of, but it looks like a sand castle and it seems to hold up well to the riding these guys throw down on it. Even with the cold temperatures, which were sure is how they held this all together, the guys were able to produce! This turned out damn good and it’s well worth a watch! Check it out right now and make sure you give it a share!

“Two of Russia’s best BMXers head to the freezing northwest of their country to embark on a unique skatepark build.

Four hundred tons of sand and water, frozen to almost concrete-levels of hardness. This was the material chosen to construct a giant skatepark castle on the shores of Lake Ladoga in Northwest Russia. The unusual playground was the brainchild of Kostya Andreev and Irek Rizaev.

Everyone is familiar with building sand castles; fragile structures unable to withstand the returning tide. Irek and Kostya decided to build a bigger-size castle suitable for BMX riding.
It took the pair quite a while to choose exactly the right location for building the park. Eventually, they selected the northern part of Lake Ladoga where they found a beach with a beautiful view and access to the water. In the winter, the air temperature is incredibly low – perfect for ensuring the sustainability of the build.

Only two ingredients were used for constructing the park: sand and water.

At -30 Degrees Celsius, frozen sand was very similar to concrete in its properties and provided excellent grip. Irek and Kostya rode several truly frosty sessions and managed to demonstrate a totally stunning performance” – Red Bull

Red Bull – The Making Of “Mirror Park”

April 25, 2018

Check out how Red Bull made the Mirror Park video featuring Courage Adams and Paul Tholen!

Last week Red Bull released that CRAZY Mirror Park video featuring Courage Adams and Paul Tholen riding a crazy park covered in mirrors and reflective material. If you saw the video, you were probably wondering how they made the video and how it all came together. Now, we get a look at how the project came together. What might surprise you, is that this took SIX MONTHS to figure out and make happen. The end result was absolutely amazing. Check it!

“Six months of planning, design and then execution: Mirror Park was filmed over just two days in a facility near Pamplona in Spain.

Watch the secrets of Mirror Park being revealed in our behind the scenes above.

The project was made possible with the help of a number of partners. BAAM, a company specialised in ramp manufacturing, put in the initial ground work. Spanish-based brand management firm Lateral Thinking took care of the artistic direction of the project, and co-produced the entire project with Malgenio Films.

For some of the filming a Segway was used. This bit of solo transport was particularly good for capturing transition runs of the video’s stars, Courage Adams and Paul Thölen.

There was some post-production work needed, with a mirrored roof having to be created. Bearing in mind that the mirrors gathered all the info of what was happening during filming, things like cameras, spotlight lighting and people had to be removed from the mirror’s reflections in order to get a clean clip.” – Red Bull

Red Bull “Mirror Park” Featuring Courage Adams and Paul Tholen

April 17, 2018

Red Bull coming through with an amazing new Courage Adams and Paul Tholen video like nothing you have seen before!

We have seen Red Bull create some insane spots or riders to use and this is definitely another prime example. They recently turned a skatepark into a full blown mirror and let Courage Adams and Paul Tholen loose to ride the place. Not only does this look super crazy, the riding is absolute fire. We can’t begin to imagine how tricky it was to ride that place just from how crazy everything probably looked and how slick it had to be. Either way, this turned out awesome and one you can’t pass up!

“BMX LIMITS RAISED TO ANOTHER LEVEL IN A BIKEPARK COVERED IN MIRRORS

Courage Adams and Paul Thölen’s best skills reflected in Mirror Park

Imagine a very sick bikepark. A tailor-made park including all the sections you need to rise BMX limits to another level. Now imagine the same park fully covered in mirrors. Finally, imagine two of the best riders of the moment nailing tricks you might have never seen.

Hard to believe? Also hard to turn it into reality. But it’s not a mirage, it’s absolutely true. It has happened somewhere near Pamplona in Spain and twelve months have been needed to make this possible.

One year throughout which, amongst other things, the Spanish rider with Nigerian origins, Courage Adams (22), has been one of the main responsibilities of the thorough design of its sections. However, riding alone in this unique bikepark made no sense and it was a huge challenge. Besides, the first feeling he had once he saw the finished park was “it looks like a spacecraft. That place looked nothing similar to how it was before,” he pointed out.

The decisive moment had come. Courage invited German rider Paul Thölen (19), who came from his hometown Viersen exclusively for the occasion. “As soon as I saw the Mirror Park I thought it was surreal and that I wouldn’t be able to perform a single trick”, he confesses.

The trouble you have to face when riding on such a slippery Surface and facing your own reflections is extreme. Everything is complex and confusing. Stimulus are multiplied times one thousand and your surrounding becomes imprecise and uncertain, to the extent of getting dizzy and having to stop several times until you get back on track.

Both riders put all the meat on the spit giving the best they could and showing that it’s a scenario that not everybody can dominate, but what started with a cautious riding kept growing as soon as the hours went by. The technique and complexity of the tricks in such an unusual set up turned what happen throughout those two days in pure magic.

Adams managed to create unlikely lines playing with manuals, nose manuals, double peg, crank arm, barspins… In order to process all what this young rider is capable of doing in one single line you need to write down each one of the tricks in a notebook so that you can then do a final addition without mistakes.

Thölen on his side performed several transfer tricks, highlighting his Fakie-Alley Oop 360, which was unbelievable to watch. The amplitude and flow the German brought to the Mirror Park were a pleasure for the eye.

Courage has defined Mirror Park as “a different and very positive experience. A real challenge who has enabled me to see my limits and evolve a lot, improve my self-control, my actions in the street and keep being motivated. I’ve learned that there are no limits in BMX, just the ones you create.”

On the other hand, Paul said he “had taken the project with great motivation because riding in a place like this can only happen once in a lifetime. The real difficulty was to isolate my mind from my own reflections on the ramps because it was hard to calculate the distances. It has not been easy to ride Mirror Park, but in the end it was a lot of fun,” he concluded.
