“Chase Pauza, Matt Lough, and Zack Gerber made their way to St. Louis on a BMX excursion. Billy Woodfin served as their tour guide, team manager, and landlord for their 10 day stay in STL. Standard Bykes Does Denver

August 17, 2016

The Standard Bykes crew coming through with a fresh video from a team trip they took out to Denver, Colorado to cruise street spots, ditches, trails spots and more, along with cause havoc in the hotel. Hit play to check out a bunch of clips they stacked during their stay!

“Today we are proud to bring you Standard Does Denver, a trip video with Standard’s Billy Woodfin, Zack Gerber, Chase Pauza, Matt Lough, Johnny Del Balso, Sam Stebila, and Riley Guest as they make their way from brand HQ in Davenport, Iowa to the Mile High City Denver, Colorado. BMX and road trips have always gone hand in hand, there’s no better a way to bring a team together, ride, film, and get into random adventures along the way! After you are done watching, read more about the trip from Billy Woodfin below…” – DIG

“We started out the trip by meeting in Davenport at the Standard Byke Co. headquarters. After some last minute preparations and bike rack modifications, we were on the road to Colorado. We piled into my car to meet with the rest of the team that was flying in. Some of us had been on the road together before, but for others this was a new experience. The drive is a long one, so we made due riding goofy setups at Nebraska rest stops while truckers slept in the parking lot. After a long 16 hour drive, we finally made it to Denver ready to shred. I really wanted to put this trip together to show that Standard Byke Co. is still around and kicking ass. We’re a very diverse team of riders but still have that classic Midwest style.
Aside from showing everyone that Standard hasn’t gone anywhere, we really wanted to show that you don’t need tons of money or fancy sponsors to put together a badass trip. We also wanted to emphasize that BMX is much more than just riding bikes. BMX is about the experiences and memories you make with some of your best friends or even complete strangers. Needless to say, we kept to the classic BMX objective, which is being carefree and having a blast.
There are too many great stories to tell in just 1 short article. A lot of wildness went down, and not all of it was just riding. One day Zack Gerber, Chase Pauza and I decided to start walking up the side of a mountain in the continental divide with no shirts and riding shoes, and Chase was in his underwear. We only intended on hiking a couple hundred feet, but weren’t satisfied once we got there. After 2 hours of hiking we found ourselves at about 14,000ft elevation. It was absolutely exhausting and treacherous. We almost died a couple times sinking into deep snow trying to reach the summit. The hike down was harder than the hike up, being delusional from lack of oxygen and exhaustion. We probably should have brought water too. One of the best clips we got on the trip was a result of true teamwork. We got kicked out of an epic spot before Zack had a chance to get a clip he had in mind for quite some time. We all decided to split up to try and distract the security guard elsewhere. The security found me in a parking lot by myself and began asking where the rest of us went. I knew how important this clip was, so I did everything I possibly could to keep the idiot distracted. Asking him everything from “Where is the nearest gas station?” to ” Where do babies come from?”. After around only 10 minutes of distraction, the guys came running back up the parking lot absolutely pumped.
The trip was a complete success and I believe the footage will back that up. Everyone rode hard and no one was seriously injured. We had many uncontrollable laughs, bathed in freezing streams, saw amazing sights and rode some unforgettable setups, which made this adventure a prime example of a good ol BMX roadtrip. #rideforglenn”

Salute To The 4th Contest Flyer

June 21, 2016

salute-to-4th-bmx-contest-flyer-rochester-mn

As many of you know, every year we try and throw a big contest here in Minnesota at one of the skateparks. Last year we did two contests, one in the Winter and one on the 4th of July. After the contest on the 4th of July last year, myself and a few other locals and parents at the skatepark ended up forming a non-profit foundation to help repair and expand the local skatepark in Rochester, Minnesota. The Keep Pushing Forward Foundation was founded and we’ve been working toward our goal, which is a massive skatepark. Once again, we have teamed up with the Salute To The 4th event held by The Commission and the city of Rochester to throw another BMX and skate contest. Above is the flyer for the BMX contest that we’ll be throwing with proceeds from the event, plus donations all going toward the Keep Pushing Forward Foundation! We have a TON of great sponsors, so there will be a ton of prizes up for grabs!

The contest will be in a jam format with beginner, intermediate and expert classes. We will also be throwing a Subrosa Street Rail Jam as well! Practice and registration will kick off at 11 AM on July 4th at Silverlake Skatepark! We’ll be starting the Beginner classes (BMX followed by skate) at 1PM, Intermediate (BMX followed by skate) at 2PM, Expert at 4PM and the Street Rail Jam shortly after that wraps up!

You can PRE-REGISTER here to save yourself a few bucks — PRE-REGISTER HERE!

There will also be a silent auction and raffles to get in on as well!

Huge shout out to all the sponsors for this!

Standard Bykes – Custom Dropout Chain Tensioners

June 3, 2016

If you haven’t caught on by now that we’re huge product nerds here at The Union, then you probably haven’t spent much time here on the site. Today while we were cruising around Facebook, going through a lot of junk, random crap we don’t care about and political warfare, we spotted a photo that Standard Bykes posted that really caught our eye. Above is a look at a custom chain tensioner they built on a 125R Cruiser race frame. Although BMX has had a number of different chain tensioners over the years from the bulky attachable washer style to the integrated tensioners on the inside of the dropout to the super clean single screw that runs through the dropouts, this design still looks amazing. We’re not 100% sure on how exactly the design works, but based off the photo it’s safe to say that it’s a three piece system with the plate in the middle, a screw that runs through the plate and dropouts and a barrel adjuster that moves the screw in or out to adjust the plate in the dropout.

Now, this might be a little “overkill” considering how simple a single screw through the dropout is and how well it works, this is still pretty brilliant and all we’re thinking is that we want it. As we mentioned above, this is on a 125R Crusier race frame Standard built for a customer, so we’re not even sure if it would work for a freestyle frame that would be putting far more stress and abuse on the dropouts thanks to pegs and grinding.

What do you think? Are you geeking out like we are right now?

Also, just for example, here’s a look at the single screw design we referenced above…

A Margarita Session at Standard Bykes

April 13, 2016

Now this is a BMX video that we were pumped to see turn up in the inbox this morning. Jerrod Glasgow hit us with a link to a video he put together from some of the riding that went down during a session on the Margarita ramps in the Standard Bykes warehouse in Davenport, Iowa. This video has a super Midwest vibe to it with just a lot of technical lip tricks and creativity. Hit play and take a look! This does not disappoint.

“Russell Wadlin, Rily Sanders, and Chris Curtis passed through Iowa and got together with David Buseman for a session on the Margarita Ramps in the Standard Byke Company Warehouse. Huge thanks to Jessie and Rick for making this happen, very much appreciated! Great times with fun people
