Drop The Pin: Demarcus Paul

December 14, 2017

Demarcus Paul spends some time exploring a random part of San Diego as he drops a pin in his maps app.

Technology has been an amazing thing for BMX. One tool that most people might not consider is just how useful Google Maps can be for finding new spots to ride. Demarcus Paul took on the Drop The Pin challenge from Ride BMX and ended up in a random part of San Diego to see just what it had or street spots. Hit play to see what he came across for things to ride with a few guest clips from Gary Young!

“The first of a new series…Drop The Pin is about simply cruising a random area in search of something outside the norm.

Demarcus blindly dropped a pin on a map of the greater San Diego area and we hit the road, parked, and pedaled ’til the sun went down. For the first attempt at this series, it went oddly well. Demarcus had been to the Banker’s Hill area before (he’s basically been everywhere in SD), but every single spot we rode was something he had never ridden before.” – Ride BMX

Matt Cordova OFF SE Bikes

December 14, 2017

The sponsor shake ups continue! Matt Cordova is OFF SE Bikes!

As of today I’m no longer riding for @sebikes. I can’t thank @toddlyons enough for the opportunity to ride for such a legendary brand. On to a new chapter. ?: @seantheexplorer

A post shared by Matt Cordova (@matt_cordova) on Dec 14, 2017 at 11:27am PST

We’ve seen a few heavy shake ups in the sponsor department like Nathan Williams leaving United, now it looks like Matt Cordova will no longer be riding for SE Bikes. At the moment Matt is currently healing up from a surgery on his foot, but we would imagine he will be back on the bike soon and likely riding or another brand since he’s been crushing it for the past few years now. Based off Matt’s words, it sounds like he already has a plan for his next chapter in his BMX career. We’ll keep you posted when and if we hear who he is going to be representing in the future.

Nathan Williams Is No Longer Riding For United

December 14, 2017

The 2018 sponsor news has been nothing short of surprising so far! United have announced that Nathan Williams is OFF the team…

Our NO FOREIGN LANDS venture to Lyon was @nathan88williams last trip riding for United. As you'll see from the edit, he still put in 110% into it, even though we knew he was leaving the brand. This is testament to who he is as rider and a person. He’s been with the United for 11 years, almost since the very first day. I can’t thank Nathan enough for what he’s done for us over the years. It’s been a pleasure and I wish him all the very best on his journey ahead. – @united_ian #unitedbmx #thanksforeverything

When it comes to sponsor changes, some are expected and some are pretty predictable… However, some are a complete surprise that we never would have imagined. It turns out Nathan Williams will be stepping down from the United team in 2018 after being apart of their team for the past 11 years! We’re not sure what sparked the decision, but it sounds like it was Nathan’s choice based off United’s Instagram post above. We will still see one last video with Nathan riding with United before he’s officially done, and we’re sure it’ll be a banger of a video, too. Does Nathan have a new deal lined up? We haven’t heard anything just yet, but it’s very likely… We can’t imagine a guy like Nathan not having a sponsor being one of the best street riders in the world! We’ll keep you posted when we learn more!

Update: You can check out the video from Nathan’s last trip here — No Foreign Lands: Part 1 – Lyon, France

Any guesses where he might end up? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Team USA Freestyle BMX Team Announced

December 14, 2017

The Team USA Freestyle BMX team has been announced…

If you were wondering who would be the first riders to represent team USA in the Olympics for Freestyle BMX… You now have your answer. Vital BMX just dropped a video and a whole bunch of information about who was selected for Team USA and what that means for these guys. After you check out the video, you can find out more on Vital BMX

“The United States of America officially has a freestyle BMX team.

Yesterday in Colorado Springs at The Olympic Training Center, USA Cycling named the following riders as members of their national team –

Nick Bruce
Colton Walker
Daniel Sandoval
Pat Casey
Justin Dowell
Hannah Roberts
Angie Marino
Cory Coffey

Along with naming the team, the athletes (and I, for some reason) got to explore the amenities The Olympic Training Center had to offer. From nutritionists to psychologists to masseuses – and much, much more – the riders have access to countless tools to maximize their abilities.

Is it weird? Yeah. Well, I take that back. No. It’s just new. New to us, that is. US Olympians have been using these tools for many years and have a whole lot of medals to show for it. With freestyle BMX officially becoming an Olympic sport, it only makes sense that – if they so choose – these riders will have access to all of the same things.

In addition to access to The Olympic Training Center, USA Cycling is also supporting the athletes financially. Pending their placings throughout the year, the athletes will land in one of three tiers. The top-tier athletes will receive benefits like fully-covered travel and even paychecks (a little over $2,000-per-month). All of the riders can receive monetary bonuses with good performances at major events.

To put it lightly, all of the riders were stoked at the opportunity to receive more much-needed support.

While this sounds great – and it is – the USA Cycling National Team is reevaluated quarterly. If a rider continues delivering favorable results, they have potential to grow with the team. If their results are less than stellar, they may fall to a lower tier of benefits or even be removed from the team entirely. There’s a good chance that the team in December of 2018 will look drastically different than this recently-announced team. Also, on the flip side, if riders not currently included from The United States are able to make a big impact, they can earn their way onto the team throughout the year. Competition is brutal!

While freestyle is young at USA Cycling and the majority of the people within the office walls are just starting to get familiar with it, I found my experience there enjoyable and promising. They don’t know much and they know they don’t know much. They’re open and they listen. That’s huge. If these guys came in thinking they knew how to run things, the entire US program would surely suffer. The higher-ups admit it’s a work in progress and, as time moves forward, I think we’ll be seeing more positive things coming from the crew.

Also, before you ask, I did discuss a freestyle training facility with USA Cycling. There aren’t currently any solid plans in place, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw something before The Olympics in 2020.

The future is bright. Thanks to USA Cycling for having me out and congratulations to all of the riders on taking their next formal steps in this new direction.” – Vital BMX

Fit Bike Co. – 12 Days of Aitken: Day 1 Empire East

December 14, 2017

Chris Doyle and Kris Bennett sit down to discuss Mike Aitken’s “Empire East” video part!

The next 12 days are going to kickass! Here’s the first of 12 videos looking back on Mike Aitken‘s BMX career. Up first, we get Kris Bennett and Chris Doyle‘s perspective on Mike’s “Empire East” video part!

“Up first in the ‘Twelve days of Aitken’, which is a retrospective look at Mike Aitken’s BMX career as seen through the eyes of some of those who know him best via a selection of his hugely influential video parts, is Mikey’s section in the Erie, Pennsylvania-based video “Empire East.”

While transitioning from his first sponsor of Bully to the geometrically exaggerated-shaped frames of Mosh, a 16 year-old sharply opinionated visitor from Salt Lake City by the name of Mikey Aitken spent the summer of 2000 in Erie, Pennsylvania. While riding with the heavy-hitting crew that called Erie home at that time, he filmed a video part with Jim Winschel primarily at Buck’s Trails and Jim’s infamous backyard trails (which had gained notoriety around this time after hosting a stop in Road Fools 4). Chris Doyle and Kris Bennett provide commentary and a little insight into witnessing Mike’s casual slaying of the enormously long jumps at Winschel’s, which would still be pretty significant by today’s standards. The time period documented in “Empire East” is where Doyle and Bennett got a firsthand look at the blossoming Aitken’s natural riding talent and rapid progression that would eventually evolve to legendary status. -RD
