Jake Geisel Interview

January 12, 2008

Andrew Anderson is a contributor now for the website. He is from the Millwaukee area, a photographer, and rider. So you will see stuff popping up from him.

We’re also doing some new things to start off the year, this is an example, interviews with photographers also. You and I know it, without them the magazines wouldn’t be there, nor would your awesome myspace pictures to show all the chicks be there.
So here it is.

Name, age, location?
my name is Jake Geisel, im 17, i live in Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Photo setups?
nikon d70s(digital)nikon n80(35mm)bronica sq-a (medium format)lens: for my digital, 18-70mm and a 10.5 mm fisheye.for my 35mm:28-85mm wide, and a 50mm.for my MF:80mmflashes:1 sb800, 1 sb600, pocketwizards. and lots of odds and ends.

How long have you been into photography and more importantly how long have you been riding little kids bikes?
I’ve been into for photography for about 2 and a half years now, and ive been riding little bikes since i was 12. so 5 years.

Being one of the more prominent photographers in the Milwaukee area do you find yourself shooting photos of different people for different projects non-stop?
yeah. in the summer im usually gone everyday. i shoot a lot for mankind and profile with jeff k. I do some stuff with lil jon for kink. and stuff for mutiny with brandon hoerres. and stuff with mike hinkens for madera. and a lot of other random stuff.

Who’s soul do you steal the most?
haha I would have to say jeff k. I shoot pretty much everything for him.

What are some recent projects you worked on?
some stuff im working on now is getting more into medium format. ive always liked it a lot. and learn more about metering and lighting. as of shooting stuff theres really not that much ive been shooting. some random park stuff but nothing big.

(Brandon Hoerres)

Do you find yourself shooting more 35mm, digital or medium format?
all my stuff that you see now is in digital. but hopefully sometime you’ll be seeing a lot more medium format.

I know you don’t really touch up your photos at all, what are your thoughts on post-photo work?
meh. its alright. i would rather look at a photo that hasn’t been corrected and good right off the camera. i think it takes away lotfrom what it really was. like if you look through any photography magazine, for example nature photography they have a lot of fixing photos in photoshop and changing pretty much everything. i just think it makes stuff unreal. some people take it to far.

Who do you enjoy taking photos of the most and why?
I like shooting for jeff a lot, cause were good friends and its always fun. and if I dont like how the photo came out or I wanna shoot it adifferent way hes always down for doing it again. pretty much all the people i shoot for I have fun with.

(Mike Hinkens)

Any crazy stories from when you were out shooting?
ha. I dont have that many I can think of. I know when im done with this I’ll think of one. one that I remember is when I was in iowa shoot with brian kachinsky and jeff k. brian was doing some stair gap to flat rail. and as soon as he landed it we were getting kicked out. and the grounds keepers were chasing us up the hill in there little gator, that was pretty funny. this one time in st. louis the campus police tried to take me away because i was underage. that was sweet. had to call my mom. she thought it was pretty funny.

Describe your ideal shot.
hmm, thats a hard one. I like shoot at night and messing with lighting. I like just the subject and whats going on light up and black background. It helps you focus on whats going on. or shots with lots of colors or good angles. that was a hard question to answer.

Do you see yourself making a living off of photography?
meh. it could happen. it would be a pretty sweet job to just shoot photos for people. work for a magazine or something.

Text much?
oh man, I’m holding my phone right now. I text way to much. probably over 10,000 a month. the other day my phone wouldn’t stop shutting off I texted like over 1200 in a day. It didnt wanna work anymore, but it’s all good now.

Do people ever make fun of the way you speak?
Theres only a few people that do. I always ask people if I talk weird and they say no and don’t understand why like only a few people talk shit on it. pretty shitty. I never talked shit on them.

(Lil Jon)

Shoutouts and thanks……
ha. AJ would have to be the first. he made this interview for me and leaves me good threating messages to wake up to a lot. Jeff K, for getting my name out a lot, my parents for helping me pay for stuff when I didnt have money, and letting me skip school so I can go on trips. Jeff Zielinski for helping me out with my questions and publishing some of my photos. Kurt at bmx union, theres about a million other people so thank you to. -Jake Geisel

Brad Simms Interview

January 7, 2008

Name:
Brad Simms aka b-simms

Location:
from Maryland, but i am a nomad at the moment

Sponsors:
hoffman/target/micreation/ snafu

It seems like you have been traveling a lot lately, where all did you get to go in 2007?
Singapore, South Africa, Canada, Germany, Mexico, China, Australia and Dubai

So your “living the nomadic life”, does that mean you have plenty of traveling planned for 2008, where all do you know your going?
yes, 08 is going to be crazy, in the summer i am planning to go to europe and tour around for 3 months

Where are some places you haven’t had a chance to go to yet that you really want to go to?
I really want to go to Egypt, Sri Lanka, India and Japan. the first 3 countries would be really hard to get to not knowing if any bmx exist there, But I’m sure it does because it’s everywhere

What are 5 things you must have with you when traveling?
digi cam, laptop, bike, ipod, condoms, clothes

Do you have any new signature parts or items coming out anytime soon?
Not that I know of?

Any new sponsors or sponsor changes you can share with us for the new year?
Nope, but if so I’ll let you know

You got a new web edit in the works for Micreation, how long have you been working on that, and when do you expect it to be all over the internet?
I was actually saving most of the stuff for something else, but at the last minute I decided to use it for my edit. So for about a month and a half I’ve been filming stuff off and on it should be on the web in a few weeks………look out

Do you have any new video parts or anything else coming out besides the Micreation edit?
top secret!

Your an all around rider for sure, what do you like better, a big blasted air on a super smooth quarter or a big 180 over somethin on street?
Doesn’t matter really. Street is my favorite, but I do love pedaling fast at a big quarter and seeing if I can touch the moon.

What is something nobody really knows about you that nobody would expect?
If I told you then everyone would know. haha

What is one thing you have had the most trouble with when it comes to riding?
Trusting myself to barspin something big

Is it weird to be somewhere you have never been and have people come up and talk to you because they recognize you?
Sometimes it is and sometimes it’s not. Some kids are really cool and some people creep you out

In your recent Ride BMX interview you mentioned how you got into riding from your Uncle, what do you think you would be doing if that never happend?
My uncle did. if I wasn’t riding I am pretty sure I’d be playing football, football was my life until I found out how about a bike

Who are some of the riders you looked up to when you were growing up? Has that changed at all currently?
Matt hoffman, and not even because I ride for Hoffman, but because he does so much for the sport and he’s an amazing person/rider. Joe Rich, Ruben Alcantara and Garrett Burns. those dudes have been everywhere that I want to go besides being amazing riders

Do you have a group of friends you normally ride with or is it hard being so busy?
I’ve been hanging out in cali for the winter so I don’t get to ride with a bunch of people. lately I’ve just been riding with Aaron Bostrom, Dave Jacobs and Jeff Z.

Any riders that are unknown now that you think will be getting coverage soon or deserve it?
That Tyler Morrow dude from Greenville, NC

If you could only do one trick or ride one type of obstacle for a day, what would it be and why?
I don’t know, I could bunnyhop over stuff all day long and that would be fine

You got a few tattoos, did you do it just because they looked cool or do they have more of a meaning to you?
sounds dumb, but I was bored. haha. I’ll probably hate all of them in 5 years.

Your pretty beefy (no homo?) do you work out a lot? any advice for the dudes looking to get a little bigger?
Sometimes. not really because if you do too much of it your upper body will get stiff. my only advice is to do it in moderation and don’t go over board with it

When your not riding what kind of stuff are you into doing?
listening to music, internet, go out from time to time and hang out with friends. practice chinese (mandarin)

What kind of music are you into? Any unknown artists you think people should check out?
Not really. rap, rock, r&b whatever sounds good

What is the last movie you watched?
American Gangster and I Am Legend

Outside of riding stuff, who or what influences your life the most?
anyone positive or any rider that is pushing the sport has a big influence on me. anyone who supports me influences me. family and friends are a definite.

5 years ago did you ever expect to be in the position you are in right now?
hell no! not even a year ago did I know I was going to travel the world like I did in 07

What are some things you would like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
continue to stay healthy push myself to the limit and see more of the world.

What is one thing you currently don’t own that you wish you did?
A house, but I probably would never be in it

5 favorite websites?
hiphopgame.com
youtube.com
google.com
bankofamerica.com
myspace.com

I don’t know if your a big trend follower, but what trend do you think needs to go for ’08 and do you see any new ones coming on soon?
I’m defnitely not a trend follower, I don’t see any new ones coming, but people cutting their seat tubes off and zip tying it to the frame has got to go.

What is one thing you feel everyone should experience in their life at some point?
Traveling. you’ll learn more about yourself and life then any class/teacher/professor will teach you

What do you think needs to be changed in BMX?
It’s cool where it’s at we just need way more kids to start riding so all the new companies can survive because it’s tough out here

What kind of advice do you have for newer riders just getting into things?
Have fun and learn at your own pace

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
hoffman bikes/target/ micreation/ snafu/ all of my friends and family you know who you are. much love in that area. bmxunion for the interview, peace!

Anything I might have missed you would like to add?
nope!

Brad gave me the heads up that I could use this, I usually feel bad to post up legit dvd stuff.

Ted from Seshin Interview

December 30, 2007

Name:
Ted Efthymiadis

Location:
Halifax Nova Scotia Canada.

Any Sponsors?:
If only I did.

How many years have you been riding?
Last count I think was 14.

How is the canadian winter treating you?
This winter, I have finally decided I can’t stop the snow, so I’m just rolling with it. Spending time on the other things I love in my life other then riding my bike.

Do you have many options for places to ride?
Good Lord no. Zero indoors within about a 13 hour drive I think.

Do you find much time to ride with all the business stuff going on?
I’ll very lucky when it comes to time, I live a sweet lifestyle, it’s pretty free. I basically ride when I want if the weather is good.

Your the man behind Seshin, how long has seshin been around? And what made you want to start a company?
I started Seshin back in January 2001. I wanted to start the company because I had a machining and welding background. My main draw to start the company was the fact that bmx frames, bikes and parts were grossly over priced back in 2001. When I started working with a family friend who used to be an agent overseas, the prices blew me away. I was shocked to see the markup some companies were making.

You have some great prices on your goods, how do you manage that? I heard some where you won’t sell to distributors or anything?
When you buy Seshin the product is made, shipped to us in Canada, and shipped to the customer direct. Simple. This makes warranties a breeze as well!

Since you seem to aim for hooking people up with a good price and not big profits, do you have any other jobs outside of the company?
I’m Blessed to be doing ok for money. I do photography on the side with local models for some extra income, which is nice. www.nobleshoots.com

Any news going around Seshin, new products, team members? anything at all?
Sure, we are trying hard to get a killer team in the works and keep them happy. Our team manager has been doing a great job, we signed 3 or 4 new riders this year, and he’s got two new guys from the USA that should be signing in March.

You closed down your shop not too long ago, how has that gone for you and everything?
My shop was really a labor of love. It was a killer shop so many great times went down in that shop, it was more of a hang out then a shop really. I learned a lot about how BMX really works from a retail aspect and decided it wasn’t for me.
Getting orders online when I’m out at the lake with my laptop is a much better life for me to live.

You made a pretty awesome decision to ask the people on Bike guide what dimensions/name/colors/ect. for your latest frame the Shithawk which seems to be getting to be a pretty popular frame,  do you plan on doing anything like that again in the future?
YES! I honestly think that was the best business decision I have ever made.
The Shithawk version 2 will be out in a few months, and it will be even better then the first version. We added removable brake mounts, cable routing, gyro tabs and a few little treats.
Thanks BG!

Who are some of the people you ride with the most? Any up and comers you think people should be looking out for?
I honestly ride alone most of the time. I jam on my ipod and giver.
I think Greg Flag is one of the biggest underrated riders in Canada. He honestly makes me scream every time I ride with him! Love that guy for sure. Also Drew Bezanson ripps, I signed that kid when he was still a baby, now he’s on Shadow and united. Congrats Drew!

Does Seshin have any new web edits, full length DVD’s, or road trips planned anytime soon?
The last edit I made was with Greg Flag on my trip to Montreal

How about for yourself, do you plan on doing any vacationing anytime soon?
My life is a vacation compared to the life most are forced to live in 3rd world countries. I can’t justify needing in vacation.

Could you ever see yourself living anywhere besides where you live now?
Funny you ask, I’m thinking about moving actually.

What are some things your into outside of work and Seshin?
I’m all about learning how to live stress free. I remember days before I could really call myself a Christian, I was to stressed out and unhappy with my life. So I read a ton now. Knowledge is power!

What kind of music are you into?
If I start, I won’t stop.

Favorite movies?
I’m given up on movies to be frank. Every year movies get less interesting I find.
It’s all been done.

5 websites you check regularly?
Seshinbikes.com
ModelMayhem.com
Facebook.com
Fysbmx.net
Hotmail.com

What is one trick you wish you could do but can’t?
Hangover grinds on a rail.

If you could spend the day with one person, alive or dead, real or a fictional character, who would it be and why?
Jesus for sure. He can turn water into wine.

Who are your biggest influences in your life?
My father is for sure. He’s legit.

What kind of advice do you have for people looking to start a bike company?
Do something a little different. It seems like every company is the same these days. Stand out by mixing it up.

What would you like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
I’d like to get my dog titled trained in French Ring. He’s just starting out now, so in high years I’d hope for Ring3.

If you could take a road trip anywhere, where would you go, who would you bring, and why?
I’d go to California. With your sister, for some alone time.

What is something you feel should be changed in BMX now days?
I’d prefer if I could tell the difference between a male bmxer and an emo girl when I look at them from behind.

Any shout outs or thanks?
Thanks to the force that put me on this earth, my parents and family, Freak,
All my team riders, my valued customers, any haters they keep me grounded.
The boys at Tenpack and macneil, they are what bmx should be.
Thanks for the invite to do this interview.

Anything I missed you would like to add?
Bmx used to be about friendships, it was a brotherhood. Bring back those days.

Dirt Ron Interview

December 30, 2007

This interview would have been up a while ago… However with some confusion it finally got figured out! Here is a long awaited interview…

Name:
Ron “sometimes dirt”

Location:
San Diego County

Sponsors:
Give D Clothing, Homies, change droppers.

Ron isn’t a typical name, how did that come about?
Well I’m named after my great grandfather who died in world war II in the Guadal Canal. It’s Ron on the birth certificate and not Ronald so I guess that’s kinda different.

I hear your a pretty artistic dude, can you give us an abstract view on what Give D is?
Give D is like the dirty feather that everyone steps on until one day someone picks it up and realizes how beautiful it is.. but actually Give D is just the dirty feather that no one likes. To straightforward?

Your into drawing some pretty crazy stuff, where do you come up with that stuff?
I’ve been drawing since I was a kid and I would always just draw things that would make me laugh. I usually don’t think about what I’m going to draw and something pretty wierd comes out of it. Some times controversial. If you come to my house you can look into my drawings and I gaurentee you’ll laugh atleast once.

What influences your art?
Sometimes my friends, wandering thoughts, mostly my childlike immagination though.

How long have you been riding?
Since I was 12 and I’m 22 now so about 10years. My knees are 40yrs old.

What was your first bmx bike?
Oooh. A chrome gt/robinson. I miss shining the chrome.

What kind of stuff do you like to ride the most?
Cement parks, tight tranny, any weird tranny. I’ll ride whatever. Especially tranny.

What influences your riding the most?
I started skating around the same time I started riding bikes so that has a big influence on me. Whatevers trendy and unoriginal usually hit’s me pretty hard too. (sarcasm)

According to Alex your pants are pretty…snug. What kind of jeans do you prefer and why so tight?
They don’t seem that tight to me but I usually wear some krews or these cheaper hot topic pants that don’t rip as easy. I just like the way they look and they’re pretty comfy.
Snazzy.

Spinning sounds to be your thing, why are you so into them, and how far have you gotten?
I don’t know. I guess I just like me a spin. I did a 720 on dennis’s bike once. Usually I just like a good ole’ 540.

5 things you don’t leave your house without:
1. Bottle opener
2. Shuffle
3. Yes “greatest hits” CD
4. Slip ons
5. Maybe a jacket

5 things all people should experience before they die:
1. Travel
2. Some lovin’
3. More Travel
4. Party
5. A long train ride

What is the funniest moment in riding you have had?
One time in oceanside most of the D krew and I were riding by the pier and this guy was talking S*$# on our SNUG pants. I had a brew earlier in the day so I was feeling frisky. I felt that he had no reason to judge me and my friends. I was aggrivated so I kept questioning the guy and aggrivating him. At some point I was on my knees because the guys girlfriend told me to suck her c#*%. The guy punched me in the side of the head. By the time my head sprung up the guy was falling back because he had felt the rath of kyles Lightning bolt fist. The guy called his friends who would apparently be kicking our asses. His friends were a bunch of pot heads sitting in the bleachers right above where we were laughing at there friend who kyle had just dealt with. We rode for a little bit longer then left. There was a lot of testosterone in the air.

Where are some of the places you have traveled?
Hawaii (birthplace), Colorado, TJ, All those desert states. I haven’t gone to that many places.

Out of those where do you recommend people should go?
San Fransisco is awesome. They have a lot of cool stores to window shop at, beautiful scenery, and lots of good riding spots. Hawaii is nice to because the second you get on the island you loose any kind of stress. At least I do.

What are some of your favorite movies? (riding and non riding)
Nowhere fast, Label Live, Forrest Gump, Amelie, Indiana Jones trilogy, lots and lots more.

Outside of riding do you go to school or work at all?
I went to community college for a few semesters but it became costly and I lost intrest. I like to read books on my own and learn through the experience of life. I’ve learned a lot that way. If I am ever able to afford it I wouldn’t mind going back to school just cause. Also I’m a bmx and skatecamp instructor at the clairemont YMCA. I also work in the office.

If you didn’t get into riding, what do you think you would be doing?
I would probably be a fat starving artist who plays video games too much or I probably would have joined the service like the other 90% of my family.

What are some of the things you would like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
I would like to travel more ofcourse, Learn to play the piano on a very primitive level, I’d like to have a van/house, be able to skate the mini ramp at clairemont park, and.. be in a legit art show.

What kind of music are you into?
I like a lot. Classical, Punk, New wave, Experimental, Classic rock, a little hip hop. I didn’t have much exposure to music until I was almost 20 so I have a much greater urge to look for and listen to music constantly.

If you couldnt live where you do now, where would you go and why?
Probablly oregon for all the cement or san fran for all the ladies.

What is one thing you wish would change in BMX?
More kids wanting to have fun and less shit talk. Less clones. Less media tempting me to notice what I don’t want to notice.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
I’m gonna holla at GIVE D Crew!, Mom and the Pops, My two brothers who kick ass, everyone who ever rode oside park or vista park with me, vista james?, the whole world. Thank you
kurt for letting me type a bunch, thanks alex for staying posi, thank you north county for making me what I am today, the sadipillar for being a great mascot, A most importantly Chicken sandwiches.

Anything I missed you would like to add?
“Failure is the mother of success.”

R.I.P Bonnie

December 29, 2007

Some sad news that explains why the Empire shop was not open for a few days…

Edit: You really don’t realise how much something impacts another thing until it is gone. I have been seeing all over the Internet that Bonnie had love from everyone, and it brings a lot of people together in common ground. We need more Bonnie’s in BMX, it eliminates the hate and everyone has respect.

“Christmas ended on a low note for all of us here this year. out mascot and friend, Bonnie, passed away Thursday, December 27. Bonnie was recently diagnosed with liver cancer, and the disease quickly weakened her during her last few days. there wasn’t much hope that chemo would help her, and would only prolong her suffering. Tina and I decided that it was our responsibility to ease Bonnie’s pain and have her euthanized. i was with her in the room, and held her paw and rubbed her head until she passed on to the great squirrel-chase in the sky

it might seem silly to some people, but Bonnie was a big part of our family, and we’ll miss her. our plan was to no longer do the “Ask Bonnie” portion of our website when the new site (coming soon) goes live, but we’ll continue to answer questions and post comments until the site change. we hope to have a commemorative Bonnie shirt in the near future, maybe with profits going to the SPCA. Tina and I got Bonnie from the local SPCA, so why not give ’em a little back?

thank you to everyone over the years that stopped by to pet her, give her a treat, or just laugh at how nuts Bonnie was while she sat on the loading dock and guarded the outgoing boxes. if you’re going to have a beer this weekend, pour out a little bit for Barking Bonnie

Tom”
