Hoffman Bikes and the Gack Hubs

December 13, 2015

hoffman-bikes-gack-bmx-hubs

Over the past few weeks, Hoffman Bikes have been building up to their 25 year anniversary where they have been doing some interesting posts on their website about past team riders, products and really the brand as a whole. One post in particular that they just released caught our eye and will be one of those things that you BMX history nerds will love to see. Hoffman Bikes released a little write up and a bunch of photos of their Gack Hubs that were released in 1994 that featured the first 14mm axles. At this time, 3/8″ axles were standard on front and rear wheels and, needless to say, the increasing level of ramp and street riding was proving too heavy for them. Mat Hoffman and Kris Gack (who later went on to start his own brand “Gack“) worked together to develop the first BMX hubs that had 14mm axles that really changed the way BMX hubs and bikes were able to withstand the abusive riding.

There’s a great write up, along with a ton of awesome photos of the original designs, prototypes and final samples that you can check out over on the Hoffman Bikes website right here — 14mm Gack Hubs

Can You Dig It – Onyx Racing Ultra Cassette Hub Review

November 25, 2015

Onyx Racing Ultra Cassette BMX Hub

Jon over at Can You Dig It dropped a review on an interesting cassette hub by a brand called Onyx racing. We’re not too familiar with Onyx, but they’re a company that, similar to Profile Racing, produces their products here in America and make some really high quality and dialed products. Jon has been testing out their Ultra cassette hub for quite a while that utilizes a Sprag Clutch system that we haven’t seen in BMX hubs before. It’s a really interesting design and he explains some of the pros and cons of this system. Check it out here — Onyx Racing Ultra Cassette Hub Review

Sneak Peek: Eclat – Cortex Freecoaster

November 19, 2015

Eclat Cortext BMX freecoaster hub

Here’s a little something we spotted a few months back at Interbike 2015 from the Eclat crew. They have been busy over in Germany working on a new freecoaster they’re calling the Cortex freecoaster. This hub was designed when the team began asking for a simple, durable freecoaster that had adjustable slack, but wouldn’t have all the issues commonly found on traditional freecoaster hubs.

The Cortex is based around the traditional KHE internals, with a few modifications to address common issues that those style hubs have. The main difference that this hub has is that it utilizes Eclat’s new IOS mechanism (Internal O-Ring System). The IOS mechanism replaces the ball and spring with a rubber o-ring and a steel spring to leave constant friction on the axle.

Eclat also utilize 2 Japanese cartridge bearings and a polymer bushing that goes behind the bearings to give it added support for the lateral impacts that commonly blow bearings out on freecoaster hubs.

The third change that the Cortex hub features is an integrated stop ring that prevents the drive threads in the clutch from clamping down on the driver side bearing and wearing it down to cause the side to side play that is common on worn in KHE style freecoasters.

The Cortex freecoaster features a CNC machined 6060-T6 alloy shell with a heat-treated male 14mm axle, a 1/4 crank of slack stock with internal washers that are supplied with the hub for those of you who prefer less slack.

The Cortex freecoaster will be available in December in right or left side drive, the option of just the hub or a complete wheel that’s laced to the Eclat Tripping’ XL or Bondi V2 rims. You can also use the new Eclat Gong nylon drive guard on this hub.

No word on price, but we would imagine it will be comparable to most other freecoaster hubs available. The real question is… Will this be the sought after solution to the many issues that traditional freecoaster hubs run into from the abuse BMX puts them through? We will have to wait and see, but it sounds like Eclat have Bruno Hoffmann and Dillon Lloyd putting the hub through the paces and getting good results.

Product: BSD – West Coaster Freecoaster Hub

November 13, 2015

bsd-west--coaster-bmx-hub-freecoaster

Here’s one we got a look at back at September in the BSD Interbike 2015 Preview. The new West Coaster freecoaster hub that they have been working on over in Scotland. The West Coaster freecoaster starts out with a 6061-T6 aluminum shell with high quality sealed bearings, a 4130 heat-treated chromoly axle, a unique durable clutch design and a triple bearing driver that is designed to to hold up to the heavy abuse these hubs are put through in the streets. Below you can find a little more info about their new drag system that BSD chose to go with…

“We utilized a totally new type of drag mechanism, instead of the usual ‘metal grinding on metal’ spring arrangement we used a heavy friction O-ring to create drag on a highly ground and polished section of the axle. This makes for smooth operation, while generating ample friction to engage the hub.

We tested many different designs of the driver, the all bushing systems we tried had too much wobble, we also tested various configurations of cartridge bearings, they had their own issues. We got the best results using 2 x cartridge bearings, 1 x polymer bush bearing and a C-clip to keep everything simple, steady and solid.”

The West Coaster hub comes in right or left side drive with color options of black or polished, a weight of 1.45 lbs. (660 grams / 23.28 oz.) and have Jersey Barrier Push-On drive and non-drive side hub guards included.

The Hub will be hitting BMX shops and mail-orders that carry BSD worldwide in December, so hit your favorite shop up and see if you can get on that pre-order list today.
