Nowear – 1st Annual “Ride Inside Clip Contest”

February 21, 2019

Anyone who lives in a place where it snows or gets freezing cold knows you an go a little stir crazy when you get stuck indoors. The Nowear crew decided to do a video contest where riders submitted their best clips from indoor sessions they got in, that wasn’t at a skatepark. Based on the submissions, it looks like a lot of riders found ways to get a session in their living room, bed room, kitchen, basement, hotel rooms, restaurants, stores, class rooms and more. We’re pretty sure we saw a full on mini ramp in a basement that looks amazing, too. After all was said and done, Matt Beringer ended up taking the win, and it’s easy to see why! Matt’s style of riding was made for this video contest, haha.

“Year 1 “Ride Inside Clip Contest” from Nowear BMX.
This edit includes everyone who sent in clips from all around the world.
Rules were you had to film a clip from inside (skateparks did not count). We were trying to show the spirit of a BMXer, despite whatever Mother Nature threw at us we would find a way to have fun and ride our bikes.
Clips were accepted the entire month of January 2019. Ten finalists were selected, then the public voted for 1 week to pick the top 3.
Here they are:
1. Matthew Beringer @meberinger
2. Flatland Dave @flatlanddave
3. Emilio Kidd @yungfather_

Congrats to all the winners, finalists and anyone who had fun.

Enjoy this edit and Stay Rad everyone!

Please join us next year as this will be an annual event held by Nowear every January.”

“Anything Goes” with TJ Lavin and Forrest – Matt Beringer Interview

January 21, 2018

TJ Lavin and his buddy Forrest have a new podcast called “Anything Goes”… This time around they talk with Matt Beringer who discusses something private that he hasn’t let out to the public before.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM0QsJcvwD8

It looks like TJ Lavin has kicked off another Podcast / interview style show to get to know different people a little better, this time with his buddy Forrest Griffin. This time around TJ and Forrest kick things off with a story about TJ getting into a heated moment at Starbucks for petting a dog. After that, he gets the one and only Matt Beringer to talk about BMX, working in his garage as a machinist making bar ends, and probably pretty surprisingly to 99% of you, coming out publicly about being gay to the BMX community. Matt has kept this part of his life to himself and out of BMX for many years with only his closest friends and family really knowing, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re stoked for Matt feeling like he’s in a good enough place to let everyone know. This one is just short of an hour, but it’s a really good watch!

Hell yeah, Matt! Stoked for you. Still one of the best to ride a BMX!

“This week, we have a very special guest with Matt Beringer. Matt is the most hardcore guy in BMX and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Matt also reveals something about himself that very few people know. TJ also has a story about his morning at Starbucks.

As always, send in your questions to TJandForrest@gmail.com.“

Fit Bike Co. – 12 Days of Aitken: Day 9 – 50/50 “That’s It”

December 22, 2017

Fit Bike Co.’s 9th day of the 12 days of Aitken takes a look back at Mike’s 50/50 BMX’s “That’s It” video!

It’s crazy how many amazing video parts Mike Aitken has had over the years. Today Fit Bike Co. had Matt Beringer and Shawn “Elf” Walters sit down and watch Mike’s section from the 50/50 BMX “That’s It” DVD. This was another step in the progression of Mike where he went to work on everything brakeless. This one has so many gnarly clips that he makes looks so effortless. Hit play!

“We’re 3/4 of the way through our ‘Twelve days of Aitken,’ which is a retrospective look at Mike Aitken’s BMX career as seen through the eyes of some of those who know him best via a selection of his hugely influential video parts, and what better part to kick off Day 9 than with Mikey’s epic “That’s It!” section.

2007’s Salt Lake City, Utah-based full-length video “That’s It!” was arguably one of the most progressive independent videos to date. And Mike’s section deservingly took the closing honors. The riding in this section is the epitome of his matured style and progression. Newly brakeless in many clips, he utterly lays waste of the SLC area streets, Beringer’s ramp, and Tanner trails. So many classic clips documented on his home turf; and as Shawn “Elf” Walters says, this is easily one of, if not the, best part Mike has made. -RD

Fit Bike Co. – 12 Days of AItken – Day 5: The Beginning 2

December 18, 2017

On the 5th day of the 12 Days of Aitken, we get a look at Mike’s “The Beginning 2” Part!

Matt Beringer and Shawn “Elf” Walters sit down to talk about Mike Aitken’s part for “The Beginning 2” that never was actually released as a full video, but Mike’s part did make it into the “Fit Life” bonus section. As we’ve seen the past 5 days, Mike’s level of progression just keeps going and this is a clear indicator of that. Amazing riding in this one.

“Day 5 in our ‘Twelve days of Aitken’, which is a retrospective look at Mike Aitken’s BMX career as seen through the eyes of some of those who know him best via a selection of his hugely influential video parts, continues with Matt Beringer’s “The Beginning 2”, filmed in 2002.

Matt never released the video, and since Mike had a completed section ready to go to VHS duplication (VHS tapes still existed at this point, but were quickly going the way of the Sabre-toothed Tiger, thanks to the influx of DVDs), it ended up being included in the bonus section of “Fit Life.” Like the first “The Beginning”, this was also filmed primarily by longtime friends Matt and Shawn “Elf” Walters (who provide the commentary). Filmed less a year after “Up In Arms”, Aitken just kept going bigger and bigger, with a more refined signature style. Mike was a regular at many of the bigger contests during this time, and there are a few clips sprinkled throughout of him killing it at them. Some of the transfers and lines documented in his section at parks around Salt Lake area are insane, and haven’t been replicated fifteen years later. -RD

Fit Bike Co. – 12 Days of Aitken: Day 2 – The Beginning

December 15, 2017

Fit Bike Co. had Shawn “Elf” Walters and Matt Beringer sit down and talk about Mike Aitken’s first video part in “The Beginning”…

The 12 days of Mike Aitken continues! This time around Fit Bike Co. had Shawn “Elf” Walters and Matt Beringer to talk a little bit about Mike Aitken’s first video pat in “The Beginning” video that Matt produced back in 2000. Hit play and take it all in!

“Day 2 of ‘Twelve days of Aitken’, which is a retrospective look at Mike Aitken’s BMX career as seen through the eyes of some of those who know him best via a selection of his hugely influential video parts, is Mikey’s section in Matt Beringer’s video “The Beginning.”

“The Beginning” is Mike’s first video section ever (released in 2000, around the same time as Empire East), spanning from when he was 13 (around the time he had those clips in Road Fools 2 at Fuzzy’s backyard) to about 16. It documents the transition from ripping around on a race bike to his Mosh days, and filmed by Matt and Shawn “Elf” Walters (who provide the commentary). Includes his first rail (which is massive for a first rail!), contest footage, baggy pants, and the classic Mikey style in it’s infancy documented while flowing through some of the old trails and indoor skateparks around Salt Lake City, Utah. This was the beginning, literally and figuratively. -RD
