Frostbike 2017 – Wethepeople BMX

February 20, 2017

After checking out the Eclat Frostbike 2017 booth, we knew that we had to make our way over to the Wethepeople booth to see what they had on display as well! As expected, they had a full range of complete bikes, frames and parts to take a look at, so let’s get into this and check it all out!

Above you can find the Dillon Lloyd signature Buck Bars.

Here’s a look at Dillon’s signature Buck frame in Translucent Honey Gold.

Wethepeople have a large range of complete bikes from beginner all the way up to the expert level to take in. If you want to get a look at their full range of bikes, check out their 2017 Complete Bikes here!

Here is a look at the new Battleship frame in Matte Black. This frame has been super popular since it was released the other month. They have a few more color options coming soon as well. You can get full specs and details on the Battleship frame right here.

The new Message frame in this crazy Holographic Spectral Silver colorway… I think they’re shortening it down to Spectral Silver, or some other name, but yeah. It’s a pretty interesting color. Full specs and details can be found right here.

The Patron frame in that new translucent blue color.

The Patron fork in chrome.

Here’s a sneak peek look at the new Remote grip that’s flangeless and comes a little longer than most grips out there. Looks solid.

The Hilt XL Grips come with interchangeable rings for your color preference.

They also come in multiple colors for the grip, too.

The Supreme hubs in front and rear!

The Wethepeople 4Star sprocket in oil slick for those of you guys who like slick things.

The Patrol sprocket and stem geared toward the trails riders out there.

Wethepeople throwing it back to their original logo on this retro style full sprocket with the logo etched into it. Who remembers the OG sprockets that had this logo?

A little more slick for you. This time the Index front load stem!

That wraps things up at the Wethepeople booth at Frostbike 2017! Let’s keep moving!

February 20, 2017

Let’s keep moving at Frostbike 2017! The next stop was to see what Harry and Paul had on display for Eclat! As always, they have plenty to take in with their extensive line of parts, plus they even snuck a few sneak peeks in for good measure. There’s plenty to see, so let’s get into this one!

Up top we have the Venom Pegs in their new Military green color option!

Let’s just right into a sneak peek that we’re probably more intrigued by than some of you might be, but it’s a cool idea. Eclat are working on their new “Tube Amp” pack that is a two pack of tubes, but they aren’t just your typical tube that has the rubber valve stem like the other ones out there. They’ve opted for a full metal valve stem that MTB / Road brands use with a lock ring to keep the valve in place. This is just a sample, and the ring is supposed to be gold to match the stem, but it still gives you a look at how it looks on the rim. It gives you plenty to grab onto with your pump. Not sure on exact release date, but I believe it’s March since that’s been the time when a lot of brands are dropping some of their new pieces.

As we mentioned above, these Tube Amp packs come with two tubes versus just a single. It’s a little more expensive to buy two, but you ultimately save a little money if you were going to buy two separate tubes. Win / win, right?

Here’s one we’ve seen seeing popping up since last year. Eclat have been working with their Strangler Bars and Slattery stem that use a 25.4mm size versus the traditional size that stems and bars come in. If you’re curious about why thy’re offering this, you can learn all about it right here.

Eclat offer a couple different front and top load stems, so there’s likely an option that’s perfect for you.

Here’s a little sneak peek that Eclat had on display. This is the new Onyx sprocket that is cold forged and will have a different design on each side, essentially making it two sprockets in one since you can run it either way.

The Maverick cranks and RS Sprocket.

Another look at the RS Sprocket and the 4 Stroke half-link chain.

Here’s a look at the Alex Kennedy signature AK Full Guard Sprocket that comes with a replaceable plastic guard. This sprocket has been available for a little while now and you can get full specs and details on it right here.

The Pulse cassette hub with dual hub guards to keep you grinding and rolling smooth.

Here’s a look at the Mirage tire all folded up! You can get a better look, along with full specs and details on this tire right here.

The Alex Kennedy signature neon yellow color on the Raven rim has been getting a lot of buzz lately from riders that have been wanting to get them… The wait is over and they are available now.

Here’s a look at the Seeker pedal in the new Military green color.

The Alex Kennedy signature pedal with replaceable metal pins on a plastic body with an oversized axle and bushings instead of bearings.

Bruno Hoffmann‘s signature Bruno grip in the middle there.

Eclat offer a number of grips and color options.

The Cortex front and rear hub, along with the Teck hub creeping in the background.

Eclat offer a number of seats in Pivotal and Tripod styles and color options.

Can’t go wrong with a proper allen key and a friendly reminder of which way you need to be turning that wrench.

That wraps things up with the Eclat booth at Frostbike 2017! Let’s keep moving!

February 20, 2017

Next stop at Frostbike 2017… ODI Grips!

After checking out the Odyssey Frostbike 2017 booth, we moved on over to the ODI Grips booth where we got a look at two of their new items that will be available soon. First up, a Sneak Peek look at the new Mike “Hucker” Clark signature grip that is in the works. This grip is unique because it uses two durometers of rubber, allowing to mix and match colors. For example, here’s a look at the black with neon green. The outside features a rad design with waves, a Palm tree and “Hucker” made from a softer rubber material that is nice on the hands. Under that, the green layer, is a harder rubber that helps keep the grip locked down to the bars better, reducing slipping and twisting.

Here’s a look at the inside of the grip giving you a look at the harder durometer rubber.

“Hucker” carved into the grip with a palm tree logo. It’s pretty rad what you can do with this dual layer style grip.

Here’s a better look at the waves and sun on the outside of the grip.

We couldn’t give you a look at another prototype sample color that uses some different colors and mixes the bar ends we’re going to show you below, but we know there will be a certain type of rider that will be really stoked on it. But you will have to wait to see that one… Until then…

…. Here we have a look at the new Hybrid bar end that ODI will be releasing in the near future as well. These bar ends also have an aluminum cap that helps to prevent the cap head from breaking off. These are similar to the BSD grips that also use a similar design. You can find rounded edges and then on the bottom there’s a ridge that lets your bars slide in, so the aluminum cap overlaps the bars a bit to help protect the plastic plug better. These will be available in a number of colors. One again, we couldn’t show you the color that will be available with another combo of the grips above, but you’re free to let us know if you have any guesses below…

That wrapped up the new items at the ODI Grips booth. They had a TON of grips on display for all the different aspects of bicycles from BMX to MTB and more, but we’ve all seen the classic Longnecks, Roughnecks and Cult X Vans grip they make, so we figured it would be better to focus on these two items.

We’ll have more from Frostbike popping up today, so keep checking back!

The Frostbike 2017 tour begins…

This past weekend was the annual Frostbike show at QBP in Bloomington, Minnesota. This show is a smaller version of Interbike that works exclusively with the brands they carry and invites the shops that QBP work with. This is a great opportunity for brands to meet the shops and vice versa. It’s also an opportunity for brands to display their current products and even a few products that will be available in the near future.

Our first stop of the day was at the Odyssey table to take a look at what Nuno had on display. As expected, Odyssey brought in a few new items that you might not have seen just yet, along with a number of parts that are available worldwide now. Let’s take a look.

Up top we have a look at the new three piece cranks that Odyssey will be releasing in March. These cranks are more traditional than their Thunderbolt cranks that have been out since 2011 and utilize a 2-piece system. These were brought in as an option for people who prefer the standard 3-piece style with 48-splines so you can run regular or Spline drive sprockets. More details on these will be available soon.

The 49er Four Piece Bars have been available since last year and are available worldwide. You can find full specs and details on these bars right here.

The Antigram hub has been available since 2014 and has been rolling smooth since. If you’re looking for a front hub that’ll hold up, these might just be worth looking into!

The Clutch Freecoaster that utilizes Odyssey’s unique internals and an adjustable slack that allow you to externally adjust through the metal slider. If you want to learn about this hub, you should definitely check out our Insight on the Clutch hub.

The Tom Dugan signature Grandstand pedals in clear plastic. These have a wider and narrower shape to give you plenty of comfort and grip.

The Fang Sprocket for those of you who don’t need a guard on your sprocket.

If you prefer a full guard to protect your sprockets while grinding, Odyssey also have their La Guardia sprocket as well.

Here’s a look at Odyssey’s Graduate peg that came out last year. This plastic peg should help keep you grinding if you prefer plastic over metal.

Aaron Ross signature Boss grip next to the Broc Raiford signature Raiford grip.

Here’s a new one for you! The new Roloway hub from G-Sport. I believe Nuno said this one will be available in March, so we’ll make sure to get you full specs and details as soon as it is available.

Keep those bars spinning smooth with the Odyssey headset.

Need to keep your bike from rolling away when you aren’t looking? The Slugger U-Lock should help out with that.

Don’t need a full on U-Lock, but you would like to have a basic cable style lock for when you hit up the gas station for some snacks? The Kable Lock might be what you need.

Here’s a close up look at the new Litehouse rim that we got a look at back in November. If you want full specs and details on this rim, you can get those right here.

Can’t go wrong with Odyssey’s fork thanks to their 41-Thermal heat-treating. Here’s a close up of the R25 Fork that has been available for a few years now.

Here’s one we were excited to get a look at in person. The brand new Travel Tool that will be dropping in March. Similar to the DK Random Wrench or Shadow Conspiracy Multi-Tool, but with Odyssey’s own take on in. You can get all the details on this BMX Tool right here.

Here’s another Sneak Peek for your viewing pleasure. After years of rocking the Twisted PC pedal without any changes beyond the endless color options, they have decided to create a second version (Don’t worry, the Twisted PC will still be available) with the Twisted PC Pro pedal. This pedal utilizes the same look and features as the classic, but features a larger, slimmer body similar to the Dugan Pedal we saw above. I believe this will be available in March, but I could be wrong. Either way, we’ll let you know as soon as these BMX pedals become available.

The Uniguard from G-Sport that slips over the dropout versus inside the dropout on the hub shell like other hub guards. Slide your wheel on, then this guard, then your peg and you’re good to go. No messing with hub hardware or anything.

Ready for another sneak peek? The new and improved Vandero Pro hub. It takes the classic Vandero hub with a few tweaks like drive and non-drive side hub guards that come stock. Can’t go wrong with that option if you’re into grinding. Available in March. We’ll keep you posted!

That wraps things up for the Odyssey table at Frostbike 2017. This is just the start, you can check out more below!

Casey Starling Interview

February 17, 2017

It’s not everyday that a new rider pops up and you instantly know that you need to keep an eye out for them. Over the course of the past year, we have started seeing Casey Starling popping up more and more and he definitely caught our attention right away. Since then, we’ve crossed paths with Casey twice and had the chance to watch him ride in person, and it’s safe to say he lived up to our expectations. After seeing him throw down some heavy moves during the Kink Rust Belt Tour, we knew it was time to hit him up to find out a little bit more about him! Turns out we didn’t even know his actual name! Let’s get into this!

Name: Kayin Starling, AKA Casey Starling

Location: Rahway, New Jersey

Sponsors: Kink, Merritt, Deadkrowarmy, Ethik Clothing, Dirty Jersey Crew, BMXkingBikes, Visionary Brand

Years riding: 3

What was it that got you into riding BMX? Anything stand out that really made you want to get on a bike?
Umm… No, not really. I actually used to ride scooters and my motivation at the time was that if I could flair a scooter, I could definitely do it on a bike, haha.

You almost seem to have come out of nowhere after popping up here and there in a few edits prior to your welcome to Kink video. Where were you hiding all this time?
Haha, I wouldn’t really say I was hiding. I haven’t really been on a bike long enough to really get out there I guess. You could say but I’ve mainly just been riding the local parks around my town that’s really it.

We heard a rumor that you were actually sponsored for scooter riding before BMX, can you confirm or deny that one?
Hahaha, yeah, maybe a year after I officially stopped riding scooters, I ended up sponsored by this company called Alpha Omega or more commonly know as AO.

That’s funny how things like that go. We’ve seen a bunch of riders transition from scooters to bikes, or throw scooters into the mix. Would you say scooters helped you out on a bike or vice versa?
Yes, it definitely did. It helped me learn how to flair my bike like I mentioned before for example. It is literally the same thing, just on something bigger.

Obviously things with BMX have been taking off for you these days. You were added to the Kink team a little while back. How did that opportunity all come about?
I was in New York city one night for an Animal jam and I did a flair out of this statue thing. Afterward, Tyrone Williams had hit me up asking for info to give to some friends. The next day I got a call from Rochester, New York where Kink is based out of, haha.

You have had the chance to travel with the guys already between the Rust Belt Tour and everything. How has that been for you? Did it kind of trip you out being on a trip with a guy like Chris Doyle? Has it kind of changed your perspective on riding and everything at all?
The Rust Belt Tour was so sick, especially getting the chance to ride with some of my favorite pro riders such as Doyle and Tony Hamlin. I was definitely a little nervous before going on the trip. It really hasn’t changed my perspective too much. I still look at riding just the same as the day I started. It is just something I do to get away from the everyday bullshit.

Casey Starling BMX

Fresh off the Rust Belt Tour, what do you have cooking with Kink that you can tell us about? Any trips, videos or projects in the works for 2017 at all?
I’m honestly not sure as far as trips go, but I’m currently working on what is supposed to be my official welcome to Kink edit. I’ve been working on that for about a year now and it should be coming out pretty soon!

You’re also doing it for Merritt these days as well. Any sort of back story to how that opportunity all came about?
I’ve actually been officially rocking with Merritt for a while now. It has been about a year and a half now, actually. I’ve actually known Montana Ricky almost since I started riding and working at Extremz Bike Shop, so I had lot of contact with Ricky and he’s basically watched me grow to where I am today, so that’s how that opportunity happened.

Any trips, videos or projects in the works with Merritt? It seems like those guys always stay busy these days.

Merritt definitely has been pretty busy lately. After I finish up my Kink video I plan to start working on a Merritt edit as well.

What about Ethik, Dead Krow Army and your other sponsors?
Nothing big at the moment really.

So, I’ve had the chance to watch you ride at 5050 Skatepark in New York and 4Seasons in Milwaukee, and so far I’ve gathered that you’re into both park and street riding. What are your favorite parts about both styles of riding?

Street riding is definitely my favorite. Just the idea that what we’re riding wasn’t intended to be ridden and, in a sense, turning nothing into something. My favorite thing about park riding would be that the possibilities are endless. The amount of tricks you could do and learn at the skatepark is like the training grounds where you go and dial everything in before you take them to street.

If you could only ride skateparks or street spots for a year. Which would you pick if you had to? Any reason for one over the other?

Damn that’s a hard one! If I hands down had to choose I’d say street spots only because I have been basically riding the same skateparks everyday for three years, so I’m kind of over going to skateparks at the moment.

What was the first legit trick you learned and was really stoked on?
I don’t even remember my very first trick, but I do remember my very first hop whip back when I was goofy footed. My friend Isac looks at me and goes “if Stevie Churchill can do it why can’t you?” and I turned around and did it first try! I was so stoked that I just started screaming and freaking out, haha.

How did you end up learning fakie front flips and how are you so good at those? I’ve seen you do that trick a few times and you almost make it look easy.
Haha, well, the story about fakie fronties and how I started trying them is kind of funny. One day I went to the Incline Club after I had just put my freecoaster on. During the session, I basically just decided to send it and see what happens and ended up pulling it. After that day I would just randomly try them and see what happened. It’s literally all trial and error with that trick. It’s not really hard, it’s just very intimidating.

Holy shit @caseycased put a hurting on @4seasonssk8park! Go watch our new Rust Belt tour video, link in our bio! #kinkbmx ?@darryltocco

A post shared by Kink BMX (@kinkbmx) on Feb 14, 2017 at 6:19pm PST

Everyone has that one trick they just cannot do. What’s one trick that you haven’t been able to figure out that always kicks your ass?

Without a doubt it would be have to be switch whips. I’ve landed switch whips multiple times, I’ve even done switch downside whip to fakie, but that trick always kicks my ass! They’re so hard to get consistent and clean.

Casey Starling BMX

It seems like you can always spot a rider that came out of the East Coast. Do you feel like growing up in New Jersey had a lot of influence on your style of riding?
Yeah, it definitely has had a big influence from growing up riding with all the LFS dudes and watching them do gnarly ass rails to some tech cuddy storm door shit. It just gave me a different appreciation for the East Coast style of riding where it’s not all about the tricks you do, but more about the spot. Like say if you did a wallride on a fence, to somebody else it would just be another wallride. East Coast guys also look at the spot itself and be like “oh, he had to come do the wallride and pull out over the ledge and back into the bank” or “if he pulls out too much he’s crushing his ribs on a rail.” So, yeah it definitely influenced my style of riding a lot and the way I look at spots.

Who are some of the riders that you were really into when you first got started riding BMX?
Garrett Reynolds, Tony Hamlin and Chris Doyle were my favorite riders when I was coming up. It’s pretty funny because the first bmx video I ever watched that got me stoked on bmx and made me go out and ride was the Kink “Squash It” video, and now I’m riding for them.

What about these days? Who are the guys that really motivate you to push yourself?
Right now I’m really hyped on Simone Barraco, he just has the sickest style and everything is so unique in his riding. It’s really dope. I’ve also been really hyped on Dakota Roche. I’ve been watching his Talk Is Cheap section like every day now because it’s just so damn good!

Are you much of a contest guy? I feel like you would have crushed the Simple Session course this year. Any chance we’ll see you making the trip next year?
Nah, I’m not a contest guy at all. I just like riding my bike. I feel there’s no need to compete against someone when I’m just trying to have fun, but I would love to go to Simple Session just for the experience! It seems like one hell of a time. As of right now I don’t see any chance of me going to Simple Session next year, but it would be fun.

Actually, speaking of traveling. Where are a few places you really want to get to at some point to ride that you haven’t had the chance to go to yet?
I 100% without a doubt want to go to Barcelona one day. That place seems like a paradise with spots every where. I also want to go to California really bad. That would be sick.

Let’s say you got a fat budget to take any 5 riders to any place in the world to film an edit. Who do you bring, where do you go and why?
I’d would bring Dennis Enarson, Garrett Reynolds, Dylan Stark, Tony Hamlin and Simone Barraco to China. For one, China is absolutely insane with all the crazy architecture. I can’t even imagine what the spots would be like. Also, I would bring these five dude because they’re my favorite riders and who wouldn’t want to see their favorite riders do some fucked up shit?

What are you usually getting into when you aren’t riding? Any hobbies, jobs, school or anything like that keeping you busy?
No actually I’m a very boring person all I do is ride and when I’m not riding I am either sleep hanging out with my girlfriend or at work, haha.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Anything in particular you hope to accomplish?
I hopefully look to be living in my own place just chilling and riding my bike. That’s literally it.

How can people keep up with you these days?
Yeah, my Instagram is @caseycased my Facebook account is Casey Starling.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Yeah, shout to my mom and my girlfriend, Rachael, for supporting me through everything. I also want to give a shout out and huge thanks to Shannon Sheri, Jay Graz, Witty and Kyle. These guys are my family and they have helped and supported me through so much, so thank you guys!

Anything else you want to say?
Yeah, just for the record my real name is Kayin I got the nickname Casey in like 5th grade and ever since then it just stuck. Also, to any kid just getting into BMX, don’t worry about going pro or getting sponsored, just ride your bike and have fun with your friends because at the end of the day that’s what BMX is really about!

… Oh, and to anyone wondering… Yes, I used to be goofy footed I used to ride left foot forward. I switched my feet and that’s why I do my flairs switch footed. I learned them that way first!
