The Best Turndowns In BMX?

July 2, 2016

Sometimes when I look for some older videos that popped up in the past the might have been forgotten, we come across some gems that we completely forgot about. Above is a video came out some time around 2010 during the Baco Jam at 4Seasons Skatepark in Milwaukee when I was working for DIG. The concept was pretty straight forward… Walk up to somebody, point the camera in their face and ask a question on the spot. Although this video is this old, it’s pretty awesome how relevant the answers still are. It was originally on MPORA and DIG but it doesn’t appear to be “online” anymore, so I decided to get the video back and upload it here. There’s a lot of legends and riders that at the time weren’t pro, but are pro now like Reed Stark. Funny story, there’s a few clips where my voice went to hell… Literally lost it 100% at this contest and ended up communicating by typing text into my flip phone, haha. Good memories from this find.

Rest in Peace, Dom Trovato, who also makes an appearance in this one.

Original caption from the video below…

“With Baco in Milwaukee going down, there were more than enough people on hand to ask the golden question – “Who has the best turndowns in BMX…. Ever?” The consensus was for one man… but there are a hundred names that still come to mind.
Filmed on a Canon T1i

Sorry for the out of focus shots. It was a “surprise” question to everyone so there wasn’t time to focus.

Kurt Hohberger Bike Check

July 1, 2016

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-drive-side-700x

It has been quite a while since I’ve done a Bike Check for my personal setup. I personally hate posting anything about myself, since I really do try to avoid promoting myself on here since that’s not what this website is for. However, the other day I was riding and was really stoked on the way the bike was feeling and figured it wouldn’t hurt to do a fresh bike check. I’ve been fortunate enough to keep the bike dialed in thanks to support from Flybikes and Profile Racing. Seriously can’t thank Matt, David and John enough for all the support. So, let’s take a look!

Frame: Flybikes Geo 21″
Fork: Flybikes Agua
Bars: Flybikes Montaña (Painted black)
Stem: Flybikes Roey
Headset: Mix of a few different headset parts, haha.
Grips: Flybikes Roey
Barends: ODI
Cranks: Profile Racing – 175mm
Sprocket: Profile Racing Spline Drive – 25 Tooth
Pedals: Flybikes Ruben
Chain: Flybikes Tractor
Seat: Flybikes Devon Smillie Tripod
Post: Flybikes Tripod
Front Hub: Profile Racing – Mini
Rear Hub: Profile Racing – Mini Cassette – 9-Tooth Driver
Rims: Sun Ringle Big Baller
Tires: Flybikes Ruben 2.35″ front and rear
Pegs: Flybikes Tubo plastic up front and a Cult metal peg in the back.
Hub Guards: Profile Racing Aegis Front and Back
Brakes: Flybikes Manual
Brake Lever: Flybikes Manual
Brake Cable: Odyssey Linear
Modifications: Cut bars and fork down a bit.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-bars

Flybikes Montana Bars that were stainless, but I painted them black to match the rest of the bike. I found anything over 9″ rise is too much, so I stick to the 8.75″ rise.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-brakes

Brakes!? Occasionally I go brakeless, but I just end up crashing more, destroying kids at the skatepark or getting bored since it cuts down on the trick list for me. I stick to brakes for the safety and fun for the most part.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-cranks

Profile Racing cranks and Spline drive combo with the Flybikes Tractor chain makes for a real good combination. I’ve been running those same cranks for a few years now. Can’t go wrong with a classic.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-front

Front views.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-grips

The Matt Roe signature Roey grips from Flybikes are based off the old school Tri Ame grips that have been around for a long time. They use a slightly different design and a softer rubber compound. Really digging them.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-pedals

I’ve come to accept that I’m that “old dude” at 27… Metal pedals and brakes? Yep. After a while you just know what you like, and metal pedals just grip better than plastic and last a lot longer. These are definitely my favorite pedals just above the Animal Hamilton’s and Welgo MG4’s.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-front-wheel
kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-front-hub

Profile Racing Mini hub up front with an Aegis hub guard. Clean and simple. Add in the Sun Ringle Big Baller rim and a Flybikes Ruben tire and you have a sturdy wheel. I run the Flybikes Tubo plastic peg up front since I don’t burn through pegs as fast up front.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-rear-pegs

I run a metal Cult peg in the back just because I tend to burn through pegs faster in the back. It doesn’t slide quite as smooth as plastic, but I couldn’t even tell you how many grinds that peg has seen… Same with the Aegis hub guard from Profile Racing. I’m also running a cassette hub. I’ve dabbled with the whole freecoaster thing and decided it just wasn’t for me. Maybe I need to try some other options, but I just was over it after bashing my knee on the stem so many times, haha.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-seat-stay

Some of you old guys might remember the old Flybikes 3 Amigos frame that had a seat stay bridge like this. They brought it back for the Geo frame and it was definitely a selling point when choosing which frame to ride, haha.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-seat

The Devon Smillie signature Tripod seat. Although Tripod seats don’t have as many options as far as angles go like Pivotal seats, I’m a big fan of the simplicity, clean look and lighter weight that Tripod has.

kurt-hohberger-bmx-bike-check-flybikes-geo-2016-bike-700x

So that’s a look at what I’m currently running these days. Once again, but shout out to Flybikes and Profile Racing for keeping the bike running smooth. It might not be a setup that has all the latest trends, but it definitely keeps me happy!

BMX Best Tricks
In BMX Best Tricks, Andy Buckworth and Brian Fox qualified in this event in addition to their spots on the BMX Triple Hit list, taking first and sixth place, respectively. Joining them, in a stunning development, is Nitro Circus Live all-around star Gavin Godfrey. Determined to push his skills and compete against the best in the world, Godfrey jumped at the chance to compete for a spot and astonishingly leaped into second place at the pre-qualifying event. Up-and-comers Dominic Kirkham and Alex Landeros then took third and fourth place. Brandon Schmidt is another athlete stepping up and making waves outside of his regular discipline. A snowboarder and contraptions specialist on the Nitro Circus Live tour, Schmidt shocked onlookers by placing in the top five. Three more athletes have also been added to Best Tricks as wildcard selections: Seven-time X Games medalist Vince Byron, the world’s first triple and quadruple backflipper Jed “The Warrior” Mildon, and Andrew “Mini” Ahumada, who recently battled against Ryan Williams in attempt to land the massive first BMX triple frontflip, will all compete in the July 15 Nitro World Games final qualifying event.

The 19 final qualifiers in both BMX Triple Hit and in BMX Best Tricks will clash at Rice-Eccles Stadium on July 15 – the day before the inaugural Nitro World Games. Only the eight highest scoring riders in each event will advance. See below for the full list of athletes advancing to the BMX Triple Hit and BMX Best Tricks final qualifiers.

The ROG Community – Beyond the Barriers

June 27, 2016

Words and Photos by Tyrone Kelly

I recently wrote an article titled ‘The Slovenian Scene Report’ on BMX UNION. Reading that before this may just help you to gain more of an insight and help provide a little more context for this article, however I will try to be thorough enough for you and I to be on the same page.

On a previous trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia I fell in love with the BMX scene there, the utter dedication to their sport is unrivaled. When it comes to DIY spots, Skatepark ROG is most certainly the best one ever built. Not only is the park incredible, it is built in a place of historical importance for Ljubljana. The skatepark is built in a building that was once an old bicycle factory, the brand was called ROG – fortunately for us though, the company went bankrupt and the building was abandoned.

lithuania-bmx-rog-skatepark-bmx-bikes

Shortly after, it became inhabited by some young creative souls that found a place they could call their own, something to be proud of and something to build upon. On my previous trip there I was rather inquisitive as to how they had never been evicted, as essentially the 100 inhabitants of the building are technically squatting. Rok Simsíc informed me that every year they say they will be building something new and that they need to leave but nothing has ever happened, at least not until now.

Unfortunately, ROG is currently under duress. I am no politician and my sources are that of the members of the community and some Google translated articles about what the political sphere is currently like in Ljubljana.

lithuania-bmx-rog-skatepark-alley

As it seems, a large amount of money has come Ljubljana’s way compliments of the EU. Sounds great, but the target for investing these funds is into building a creative center ‘as an experiment’ to see how a center could benefit the youth. It makes no sense to me at all, especially since ROG has already done that, the community there is not only built around a skatepark.

It is an all-encompassing center of creativity, community and learning. Various people, artists, musicians, studios and living spaces inhabit ROG. They provide free lessons to educate the youth within the area; they support refugees as well as the rest of the community by providing not only education but food too.

slovenia-bmx-rog-skatepark-entry
lithuania-bmx-rog-skatepark-car-driver

The night before we arrived at ROG to get our shred on, an attack by a group of mindless skinheads occurred. They don’t seem to like the fact that refugees inhabit this space, thankfully there was a limited amount of damage and all was well the next day.

The building was once quite open and easy enough to get into, but following attacks, failed demolition attempts and a touch of animosity, a barricade has been built around the entire facility, metal sheets, tires etc now form a safety net for ROG. At night people stand atop the structure and guard the place to ensure its safety. To help the community, take a second to find out more information and sign the petition – Support For ROG Factory

Now, BMX is certainly not all politics and to say everyone had a good time, would be an understatement. For me personally it was one of the best weekends of riding I have had in years.

The Salzburg crew (SBG Unit) and I arrived at ROG at around 1pm and the session never ended. The crew was pretty international, in that we had South Africans, Austrians, Slovenians and a Romanian all shredding together so it’s safe to say that everyone was throwing down. That evening after a short break from living our lives to the fullest we returned to ROG for the evenings festivities.

When the door to the club opened at 11pm (The door is next to the skatepark entrance, how convenient?) minds were blown. People packed right in to the venue complete with a stage, functioning bar and Slovenia’s top hip hop acts. A day filled with the indoor park sweats didn’t allow for much energy to party but witnessing the vibe and getting to know the riders better was a complete treat!

The next day Rok took us on a street mission and sweet lord does Slovenia have spots! How people haven’t started making tons of trips there instead of constantly bleeding Barcelona dry, completely blows my mind.

If you’re reading this, go and support ROG, let Rok educate you with his skills on a bike and then go tear apart the streets. If you don’t have a great time in the historically beautiful, meets graffiti riddled city, then you’re part of the problem. Also, if you have a similar story/scene and would like people to know about it, let me know – I would love to come hang.
