Insight: Kali Protectives – Viva Helmet

With how gnarly BMX is getting these days, it’s safe to say that nobody can really argue that having a little extra protection is never a bad thing. A lot of pros have started rocking helmets more frequently and it’s pretty obvious to see why with some real heavy injuries happening to guys like Brett Banasiewicz to really open everyones eyes on just what can happen. Our friends over at Kali Protectives hit us up recently to see if we wanted to check out one of their BMX specific helmets they offer. We figured it would be rad to give you guys a closer look at their Viva helmet since Nick Bruce had a lot of input on it. Let’s get into this!

Product: The Daily Grind – Barkeep Stem

The Daily Grind hit us up with an exclusive first look at their new Barkeep stem that will be available later this week through BMX shops, mail-orders and direct from their webstore! This stem is made right here in the United States out of CNC machined 6061 aluminum with a 50mm reach and 35mm rise. You can find extra machining along the sides and back for additional weight savings, beveled edges, a rounded back and a recessed top for a flush compression cap giving it a clean look and a laser etched The Daily Grind logo on the top plate. There are 6 solid chromoly bolts with 4 of them being on the bottom to hold your bars in place.

The Barkeep stem is available in black and a limited run of 30 green with a retail price of $69.99. You can pick it up direct from The Daily Grind Webstore or through BMX shops and mail-orders that carry The Daily Grind worldwide.

Review: “All City” DVD

If you follow a good number of pros on Twitter or Instagram, there’s a good chance that you might have seen some buzz for the “All City” DVD that was recently released. This London based video was put together by Ben Green, who you have probably seen his work in the Premier BMX Store videos. We’ve been a big fan of those edits, so when we heard he was working on a DVD it was a no brainer that we had to see it! The project, which spans from 2012 to early 2015, was recently released and we figured it would be a good time for a review! Let’s talk about this video a little bit!

One Hour with Justin Schwanke

Our good friend Justin Schwanke wanted to kick off the summer right. So, Justin and his dad loaded up in their car and went on a huge road trip across Canada, down through New York and New Jersey, on over to Illinois, up to Minnesota and then back to Canada. During the trip Justin hit up a bunch of skateparks and checked out the sights. When he came through Minnesota we had him stop in Rochester for a quick session at the Silverlake skatepark for a session.

They were on a tight schedule so we didn’t have a ton of time to ride, but we did manage to get a solid hour of filming in for it. During that time, Justin came through with a bunch of solid clips with his unique style and racing background. Take a look at the BMX video above that came from it!

There haven’t been a ton of BMX DVD’s coming out these days, but there’s still a place for them because of the way footage comes and goes so fast on the internet these days. Over the past year or two, The Daily Grind crew have been busy stacking clips for their second full-length video “Hard Times” that was just released last week. We got our hands on a copy and figured it would be a good DVD to give you some insight on since it’s definitely a standout video from a lot of full-length videos we see these days, mostly due to the shock value in it.
