“Markit Zero” – Full Video

February 27, 2017

The full “Markit Zero” video is now online…

Here’s one we were tipped off about that we did not expect to see online. The first full-length video from Markit, “Markit Zero” is now online for your viewing pleasure. This video originally came out back in October of 2013 and hasn’t been available online until now. Even though this video is a little over 3 years old, it’s still absolutely amazing and the riding still feels ahead of its time with so many bangers. Everything from the riding to the film work, spots and Dennis Enarson’s old car exploding to a million pieces is amazing! Hit play and enjoy this one over and over again! There’s a reason this won a NORA Cup for BMX video of the year.

“Markit is a crew of good friends who all love shredding bikes, filming clips, and going on trips together. Featuring the riding from Chad Kerley, Connor Lodes, Dennis Enarson, Mike Jonas, Geoff Slattery, Rob Wise, Ronnie Napolitan and Christian Rigal, Markit Zero is our first full length feature. Enjoy!”

Filmed and edited by Christian Rigal

Markit Zero Full BMX video Online

Above is the original video cover that is too good not to reshare with the video!

One section not in the video above is the crash bonus section that’s been online for about a year now…

“This is by far one of the heaviest crash sections you are ever going to see! The crew took a beating for MARKIT ZERO. We had to make sure the BMX world got a behind the scenes look into what it really took to create this DVD. Get ready for over seven minutes of raw, savage falls for your viewing pleasure.

Let’s get to know BMX filmer Doeby Huynh!

If you have been keeping up with the constant flow of BMX videos these days, there’s no doubt that you have started seeing a name that has been constantly popping up in the credits for videos featuring riders like Chad Kerley, Dennis Enarson, Kevin Peraza, Devon Smillie and more. That name would be Doeby. It seems like his name is constantly popping up and that’s awesome because he’s been producing some amazing BMX videos that do not disappoint. We’ve been really stoked on his work, and we realized we really didn’t know a whole lot about this guy that is always Tweeting about food, so we figured it was time we hit him up and get to know him a little better. Let’s see what he had to say and check out some of his latest work!

Name: Doeby Huynh

Location: San Diego, California

Years Riding: 10

Years Filming and editing: 5

What was it that first got you into BMX? Any sort of memories come to mind?
Seeing X-Games on TV was what gave me the spark to get into BMX. Growing up, I was the typical Nerd (still am). I was around 12 and I learned how to pedal a bike that year. I wanted to do something cool, so when I saw BMX on TV I knew that is what I wanted to do. It still hasn’t made me cool though, Haha. Oh well.

What about filming and editing? Was it something you got into through BMX or was it something you were into before the two ever came together?
Yeah, filming and editing was something I got birthed into thanks to BMX. Honestly, it wasn’t something I wanted to do. I was hurt at the time and was the fat kid of the group, so I was blessed with camera duties. I developed a passion for it down the line after I made a few videos. Now I love it. I’m thankful things happened the way it did.

Haha, that fat kid in the group… In the past year it seems like you have been popping up all over the place with different video projects. Was it ever your goal to be a full-time filmer or did it just kind of happen?
It became a goal eventually when I didn’t want to live off the $1 menu anymore. But no, it wasn’t at first. As my passion for filming developed, I knew I wanted to be filmer.

I swear you have fired out a unreal number of really dialed edits in the past few weeks like Kevin Peraza’s new Mongoose video and Broc Raiford’s latest for Dan’s Comp. How many different videos do you think you have done in the past year?
Thanks. I don’t really count how many videos I do, haha. I just try to work on as many projects as I can throughout the year. I like to film the best I can whether it’s for instagram or video part, so I don’t try to fire out too many videos. As long as I can stay focused and put out videos the best I can, I’m happy.

Being based in Southern California has its perks with so many riders to work with. Who was the first rider you filmed a legit video for?
Living in California is a blessing for sure. Having weather that allows you to ride all year is the best. But just living here and owning a camera, doesn’t mean you get to work with whoever you want, haha. My first legit video was with Albert Mercado.

Who are you currently working with on projects? Any hints at what’s coming?
I’m currently taking a little break, but I do have a few things lined up this year. I’ve just been filming around locally with Christian Rigal, and Gary Young lately.

Dan’s Comp: Devon Smillie Video on Vital BMX

Who are your top 5 favorite guys to film with? Any reason why?
I really can’t answer that. Haha. All I can say is that all the guys in San Diego are my favorite people to work with. I love SD. It’s awesome to have so many dudes out here that are so well rounded, and being able to film everything. It’s always a good time when you can just session around with your friends, and randomly be able to stack clips.

Is there a rider that you haven’t had the chance to work with yet, but really want to make happen?
Theres too many to name! Haha. I would love to work with dudes like Jake Seeley, Garrett Reynolds, Alex D, Kriss Kyle and Dan Foley.

Do you get into video projects outside of BMX at all like weddings or anything? I feel like you might have a secret food vlog with all of the food related tweets you fire out.
Haha, there are a few things I work on outside of BMX, I just don’t talk about it or promote it. I do love food. I would love to make a food channel soon, but I’m just lazy.

Did you ever go to school for film work at all, or has it all been self taught?
Honestly, I wish I had the opportunity to go to film school. It’s mostly self taught, but anytime I need help I reach out to Film Gods of BMX , and thankfully they have helped me out a ton!

How important do you feel school is for something like making videos and everything?
I feel like you can always make anything out of something. It’s all about working with what you have available. If you have an opportunity to go to school, I would say take it. I don’t think school is necessary for filming BMX, but it would help a ton in camera settings and post production.

Who are a few of the filmers that you’re really into these days? Where do you get most of your inspiration for projects?
I love the work of Dave Sowerby, Mike Mastroni, Christian Rigal, Darryl Tocco and Tony Ennis. Growing up I was heavily influenced by all these guys! It’s crazy I get to call most of these dudes my friends.

What was your first camera setup when you started out?
I started out with a Canon GL2. I hated it, but it worked and it’s all I had so that’s all that matters.

What are you working with for a setup these days?
I’ve been filming with a Sony NX100 as my main camera. For second angles, I use a Panasonic G7. Other than that I use a fluid head tripod, and a Glidecam if necessary. Also snacks, always bring snacks.

What are you doing all of your editing on?
I edit on a Macbook Pro using Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere and After Effects

Do you have a dream setup as far as cameras, gear, computer, etc. go? What would you be working with if you could afford it?
For Now, I’ve been wanting a few DVX200’s and a better fluid head tripod.

What’s the weirdest thing somebody has asked you to film? Did you do it?
Some dude I asked me to film him working out, and of course I said no…

I know you mentioned you were taking a little break at the moment, but are you up for other jobs right now? What’s the best way to get ahold of you?
I’m always open for ideas and to work on projects. The best ways to contact me are through Email – doeby.huynh@gmail.com and Instagram – @doeby.

What kind of advice do you have for the guys who are just starting out with making videos?
My advice would be to work with what you have, and make the best out of it. You don’t need the best to make the best. Also, film as much as you can! The best way to learn is to just go out here and do it. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people, the worst they can say is “No”.

How can people keep up with you these days?
My instagram and twitter is @doeby.

Do you have any shout outs or thanks?
Thank you to BMX! BMX is great, fuck y’all who thinks otherwise. I would like to thank Henry at East
County BMX for everything and holding it down for the bmx scene in San Diego. Everyone who has trusted me to work on a project with them. Barthalomou the Gawd for being the best dog ever and Albert Mercado, sometimes.

Anything else you want to say?
AGE IN BMX SHOULD NOT BE A THING. No matter how old or young, everyone deserves respect. No one should discriminate on age, if you can ride a bike that’s all that matters. I feel like there has been way more salty young dudes than salty “old” guys lately. Fuck everyone

Not too many BMX filmers can say they have an X-Games medal. Doeby ended up with a Bronze medal for his work with Dennis Enarson on his “Real BMX” part.

Frostbike 2017 – Subrosa Brand

February 20, 2017

The final stop at Frostbike 2017! Let’s see what Subrosa had on display!

After checking out The Shadow Conspiracy’s Frostbike setup, we wanted to get a look at what Subrosa also had on display! They only had a few items, but there were a few new items to take in, so let’s get into this one!

Up top and right here is a look at the new Happy Hour seat that’ll be dropping sometime later this year. The seat is loaded with different bottle caps giving it a unique look.

Here’s a look at Subrosa’s Magnum full guard sprockeet in the new Silver colorway that’ll be available on a few of their parts.

The Chula Upload top load stem is this new Mint green color that will also be making an appearance in 2017 with that Silver color.

Lahsaan Kobza‘s new Code peg that comes with a bar of wax!

Subrosa have 17 different complete bikes from little beginner bikes on up to their 26″ bike and everything in between. Here’s a look at just two of those bikes! You can check out the full range here — Subrosa 2017 Complete Bikes!

The Combat Light from Subrosa is now available in black, clear / white and orange! The lights have three settings, on, slow blink and fast blink with bright LED light bulbs to make sure people see you when you’re out cruising at night!

That wraps things up for Subrosa at Frostbike 2017! Check out more from the show below…

Frostbike 2017 – The Shadow Conspiracy

February 20, 2017

Let’s take a look at what The Shadow Conspiracy had on display at Frostbike 2017!

Our next stop at Frostbike 2017 was The Shadow Conspiracy booth to take a look at what Ronnie Bonner and the rest of the crew have been working on down in Florida. As always, there’s plenty of new items to take a look at, so let’s get into this and see what they have to offer.

Up top is a look at the new Blue and Black colorway.

The new purple swirl parts.

A little red, orange and black swirl for another color option that will be available soon as well.

The Ravager plastic pedals will come in blue and purple as well.

If you are looking for something a little less flashy, here’s the new grey colorway that will be available on a number of Shadow parts this year.

The latest version of the Shadow Conspiracy x Greenfilms Mark II DSLR Backpack comes with this rad color option.

Shadow’s gloves now available in a handful of colors (pun intended there).

Here’s a look at the new Optimized freecoaster. You can get full specs and details on the hub here — Optimized Freecoaster

The new Symbol cassette hub for those of you who want a reliable cassette hub to keep you rolling!

The Supreme Interlock chain is now available in gold for a color option!

The Shadow Conspiracy offer a full range of pads for every situation from their Invisa-Lite series to their new Recovery series pads.

The Shadow Conspiracy have a new helmet coming that people should be really stoked on. It takes the classic look of the Pro-Tec Bucky Lasek helmet everyone loves, and gives it the CPSC certification and reduces a ton of the bulk. The inside features an inner padding shell that’s connected to the plastic outer shell that prevents the padding inside from moving, so impacts are absorbed better in the helmet and not your head. It’s also surprisingly light. So, if you have been considering a helmet, but you hate the way most fit or feel, this might just be what you need. I know I want one.

The new Kevin Kalkoff signature Penumbra seat looking rad

Here’s a look at Lahsaan Kobza‘s latest Penumbra seat.

You know Simone Barraco is doing another seat as well.

Here is a look at Trey Jones‘ new signature seat mixing his love for Dr. Pepper in the mix.

Last but not least, the new Sabotage guard sprocket. This sprocket has a detachable nylon guard that you can rotate or change out after it gets worn out from grinds! Coming soon!

That wraps things up at The Shadow Conspiracy‘s booth at Frostbike 2017!

February 20, 2017

Next stop on the Frostbike 2017 agenda… Stolen Bikes and Fiction BMX!

Cruising right along. Our next stop at Frostbike 2017 was the Stolen Bikes and Fiction BMX booth to get a look at the bikes and parts they had on display. They even had a few new items to check out, so let’s get into this!

Two of the 2017 Stolen complete bikes. You can check out the full range of bikes here — Stolen 2017 Complete Bikes Catalog!

The Fiction Troop Tire has been a popular one with the camouflage color option. You can learn more about this tire right here.

Here is a look at the new Fiction pedals that will be dropping soon. Word on the street is this pedal has become a favorite for the Stolen team. Affordable and get the job done.

Fiction trying out a new colorway on their pegs, pedals and seat that might just appeal to those of you out there looking for something different. I didn’t catch the name of the color, but it’s coming soon, so we’ll keep you posted when it drops!

The new Jackson Ratima signature Highjack frame with some awesome graphics by Eben Fischer.

The new Stolen Sean Morr signature Connoisseur frame is similar to the Jackson Ratima frame, just different geometry and graphics. Overall, sturdy frame that’ll be able to take a beating on the streets.

The Tie Dye Thermalite pedals have been out for a minute now and they will definitely catch your eye.

Stolen’s popular Sumo sprocket is now a full guard, one piece design versus the two piece they used to offer with the detachable guard. Clean and simple.

The new topload stem from Stolen comes in black and polished with these removable plates that come in a copper or black options. Looks pretty rad!

Here’s a look at the new Stolen bar ends that mix the Odyssey Par End with the Merritt bar ends with the built in washer to help keep the end from breaking off as easily. These will be hitting BMX shops and mail-orders soon, so keep an eye out for that if you’re in need of new bar ends and want something that’ll hold up.

That wraps things up with Stolen and Fiction at Frostbike 2017! On to the next one.

The new Message frame in this crazy Holographic Spectral Silver colorway… I think they’re shortening it down to Spectral Silver, or some other name, but yeah. It’s a pretty interesting color. Full specs and details can be found right here.

The Patron frame in that new translucent blue color.

The Patron fork in chrome.

Here’s a sneak peek look at the new Remote grip that’s flangeless and comes a little longer than most grips out there. Looks solid.

The Hilt XL Grips come with interchangeable rings for your color preference.

They also come in multiple colors for the grip, too.

The Supreme hubs in front and rear!

The Wethepeople 4Star sprocket in oil slick for those of you guys who like slick things.

The Patrol sprocket and stem geared toward the trails riders out there.

Wethepeople throwing it back to their original logo on this retro style full sprocket with the logo etched into it. Who remembers the OG sprockets that had this logo?

A little more slick for you. This time the Index front load stem!

That wraps things up at the Wethepeople booth at Frostbike 2017! Let’s keep moving!

February 20, 2017

Let’s keep moving at Frostbike 2017! The next stop was to see what Harry and Paul had on display for Eclat! As always, they have plenty to take in with their extensive line of parts, plus they even snuck a few sneak peeks in for good measure. There’s plenty to see, so let’s get into this one!

Up top we have the Venom Pegs in their new Military green color option!

Let’s just right into a sneak peek that we’re probably more intrigued by than some of you might be, but it’s a cool idea. Eclat are working on their new “Tube Amp” pack that is a two pack of tubes, but they aren’t just your typical tube that has the rubber valve stem like the other ones out there. They’ve opted for a full metal valve stem that MTB / Road brands use with a lock ring to keep the valve in place. This is just a sample, and the ring is supposed to be gold to match the stem, but it still gives you a look at how it looks on the rim. It gives you plenty to grab onto with your pump. Not sure on exact release date, but I believe it’s March since that’s been the time when a lot of brands are dropping some of their new pieces.

As we mentioned above, these Tube Amp packs come with two tubes versus just a single. It’s a little more expensive to buy two, but you ultimately save a little money if you were going to buy two separate tubes. Win / win, right?

Here’s one we’ve seen seeing popping up since last year. Eclat have been working with their Strangler Bars and Slattery stem that use a 25.4mm size versus the traditional size that stems and bars come in. If you’re curious about why thy’re offering this, you can learn all about it right here.

Eclat offer a couple different front and top load stems, so there’s likely an option that’s perfect for you.

Here’s a little sneak peek that Eclat had on display. This is the new Onyx sprocket that is cold forged and will have a different design on each side, essentially making it two sprockets in one since you can run it either way.

The Maverick cranks and RS Sprocket.

Another look at the RS Sprocket and the 4 Stroke half-link chain.

Here’s a look at the Alex Kennedy signature AK Full Guard Sprocket that comes with a replaceable plastic guard. This sprocket has been available for a little while now and you can get full specs and details on it right here.

The Pulse cassette hub with dual hub guards to keep you grinding and rolling smooth.

Here’s a look at the Mirage tire all folded up! You can get a better look, along with full specs and details on this tire right here.

The Alex Kennedy signature neon yellow color on the Raven rim has been getting a lot of buzz lately from riders that have been wanting to get them… The wait is over and they are available now.

Here’s a look at the Seeker pedal in the new Military green color.

The Alex Kennedy signature pedal with replaceable metal pins on a plastic body with an oversized axle and bushings instead of bearings.

Bruno Hoffmann‘s signature Bruno grip in the middle there.

Eclat offer a number of grips and color options.

The Cortex front and rear hub, along with the Teck hub creeping in the background.

Eclat offer a number of seats in Pivotal and Tripod styles and color options.

Can’t go wrong with a proper allen key and a friendly reminder of which way you need to be turning that wrench.

That wraps things up with the Eclat booth at Frostbike 2017! Let’s keep moving!

Frostbike 2017 – ODI Grips

February 20, 2017

Next stop at Frostbike 2017… ODI Grips!

After checking out the Odyssey Frostbike 2017 booth, we moved on over to the ODI Grips booth where we got a look at two of their new items that will be available soon. First up, a Sneak Peek look at the new Mike “Hucker” Clark signature grip that is in the works. This grip is unique because it uses two durometers of rubber, allowing to mix and match colors. For example, here’s a look at the black with neon green. The outside features a rad design with waves, a Palm tree and “Hucker” made from a softer rubber material that is nice on the hands. Under that, the green layer, is a harder rubber that helps keep the grip locked down to the bars better, reducing slipping and twisting.

Here’s a look at the inside of the grip giving you a look at the harder durometer rubber.

“Hucker” carved into the grip with a palm tree logo. It’s pretty rad what you can do with this dual layer style grip.

Here’s a better look at the waves and sun on the outside of the grip.

We couldn’t give you a look at another prototype sample color that uses some different colors and mixes the bar ends we’re going to show you below, but we know there will be a certain type of rider that will be really stoked on it. But you will have to wait to see that one… Until then…

…. Here we have a look at the new Hybrid bar end that ODI will be releasing in the near future as well. These bar ends also have an aluminum cap that helps to prevent the cap head from breaking off. These are similar to the BSD grips that also use a similar design. You can find rounded edges and then on the bottom there’s a ridge that lets your bars slide in, so the aluminum cap overlaps the bars a bit to help protect the plastic plug better. These will be available in a number of colors. One again, we couldn’t show you the color that will be available with another combo of the grips above, but you’re free to let us know if you have any guesses below…

That wrapped up the new items at the ODI Grips booth. They had a TON of grips on display for all the different aspects of bicycles from BMX to MTB and more, but we’ve all seen the classic Longnecks, Roughnecks and Cult X Vans grip they make, so we figured it would be better to focus on these two items.

We’ll have more from Frostbike popping up today, so keep checking back!
